Can I Connect To My Wifi Away From Home

How To Connect To Home Wifi Remotely

How to Access your Router from Outside Network

To enjoy remote management of your router beyond the comfort of your home, you do need to have a few things. Firstly, the device you plan to access your router should be connected to an internet network.

Secondly, you would need to remember some information related to your router. These include your routers IP address, admin username, and password . You can either note these somewhere for convenience or feed them into your brain memory.

With pre-requisites out of the way, lets check and find out the three easy steps you need to follow to set up remote management for your router.

Visit Locations That Offer Free Wi

A variety of community locations and businesses in your area may offer free Wi-Fi. Many businesses that offer coupons, special promotions, and loyalty programs may provide free Wi-Fi to consumers under specific circumstances.

These give visitors an added convenience and enable more consumers to take advantage of in-store internet features. Libraries, bookstores, public plazas, McDonalds and Starbucks franchises the chances are pretty high that youll encounter some free sources of internet access in your day-to-day routine.

This can be a boon to individuals with limited data plans. Understand, however, that your access to public networks may come with some restrictions. Certain websites may be blocked, and the connection speed may not be sufficient for intensive streaming or downloading.

There are also some security concerns with using public Wi-Fi. Unscrupulous individuals can intercept data being transmitted to and from devices connected to public networks, potentially allowing them to glean enough information to commit fraud. Unless youre using a virtual private network, its not advisable to access sensitive information while on a public network.

If you have concerns about mobile pay transmitting your credit card information over a public network, have no fear most mobile pay platforms use NFC technology, so your information is not being transmitted over any public networks.

Positioning The Wireless Router

Put your wireless router somewhere where it will receive the strongest signal with the least amount of interference. For better results, follow these tips:

Place your wireless router in a central location. Place the router as close to the center of your home as possible to increase the strength of the wireless signal throughout your home.

Position the wireless router off the floor and away from walls and metal objects, such as metal file cabinets. The fewer physical obstructions between your PC and the router’s signal, the more likely that you’ll be using the router’s full signal strength.

Reduce interference. Some networking equipment uses a 2.4 gigahertz radio frequency. This is the same frequency as most microwaves and many cordless phones. If you turn on the microwave or get a call on a cordless phone, your wireless signal might be temporarily interrupted. You can avoid most of these issues by using a cordless phone with a higher frequency, such as 5.8 GHz.

Setting Up The Modem And Internet Connection

Connecting an Android phone to a wireless network

After you have all the equipment, you’ll need to set up your modem and Internet connection. If your modem wasn’t set up for you by your Internet service provider , follow the instructions that came with your modem to connect it to your PC and the Internet. If you’re using Digital Subscriber Line , connect your modem to a phone jack. If youre using cable, connect your modem to a cable jack.

Two: Configure Your Router

RELATED:Turn Your Home Router Into a Super-Powered Router with DD-WRT

Creating the actual DDNS entry is only half the battle when it comes to time saving and convenience. The other half is automating the whole process. Lets look at how to automate DDNS updates at the router and the desktop level.

Well be using a D-Link router running the fantastic third-party DD-WRT firmware to demonstrate, but the settings are pretty standardized across all routers that support DDNSconsult the documentation for your router or firmware to find out where the DDNS settings are, or just poke around the settings until you find them.

On DD-WRT youll find it under Setup > DDNS. By default, it is disabled. Open the drop down menu, as seen below, and select Custom. As you can see DD-WRT come with pre-configured entries for various DDNS services but the custom entry offers the most flexibility .

After selecting Custom you will need to enter the following information: the DYNDNS server , your username and password , and the hostname you selected in the previous section of the tutorial . If you arent sure what your DYNDNS server is, consult the documentation for the service you signed up for.

Leave the rest of the settings as they are. Click Save. Your router will now update the DDNS server every time your IP addresss changes .

    Stay Away From Repeaters

Can I connect to my WiFi away from home?

We repeat: stay away from repeaters. Weve seen people try to solve the issue of extending their WiFi range by installing additional wireless routers or using signal repeaters. This will definitely extend the wireless signal. Although a repeater may get the job done, it wont be a job well done.

Consider this familiar scenario: You have a 2 story house with your Internet connection and wireless router in one corner of the bottom floor. Your kids rooms are located on the opposite side of the house, on the top floor. Your kids are the biggest WiFi users in your house and are constantly complaining about weak WiFi signals and dropped connections. You install a wireless repeater close to your kids bedrooms with the hopes of extending your WiFi range. The kids can now use WiFi in their rooms without issue. The problem comes when your kids leave their rooms and take their devices downstairs. The devices will stay connected to the upstairs router or repeater and the kids will either have to change their network with every floor or complain to you that the WiFi isnt working right again.

Unless all equipment is handled by a controller or unified management system, youll basically be creating new wireless networks wherever you place the additional equipment. The equipments radio signals can interfere with one another, rendering roaming around the house and maintaining a strong WiFi signal impossible.

    A Local Update Client

If your router doesnt support DDNS services, you will need a local client to run on a frequently used computer somewhere on your home network. This lightweight little application will check what your IP address is and then phone home to the DDNS provider to update your DDNS record. Its less ideal than a router-based solutionif the computer isnt on when your IP address changes, then the record doesnt get updatedbut its certainly better than manually editing your DDNS entry.

How I Will Check If My Laptop Is Connected With 4g Or 3g

The details may vary from system to system, but in broad strokes, the process will look like this:

  • Check which connection is offered by your data plan
  • Check whether the SIM card supports 4G
  • Check whether your device supports the desired mode
  • Alternatively, you can choose from a plethora of software solutions that give detailed information about the connection, although their reliability varies depending on the setup you are using.

Buy A Sim Card For Your Trip

Depending on the country you are travelling to, you might find the most cost effective way to get online when you travel is to purchase a SIM card for your device for the country you are travelling to.

You can either do this on arrival, or in some cases, you can buy the SIM card before you leave such as this option for travellers from the USA to Europe,

Once you have the SIM card in your phone, you can just use this for your data needs.

For this to work you need an unlocked handset â you can check with your carrier if your handset is unlocked, and they should be able to assist you with unlocking it if you are allowed to.

If your device is unlocked, then you will be able to put any SIM card that you like into it. This has the advantage that youâll be able to get the maximum speeds available in that country as the provider will be local, and youâll also generally be able to do things like tether other devices to your handset.

Tethering allows you to set up your phone as a WiFi hotspot, meaning you can connect your laptop to the internet through your device connection. See this guide for instructions on setting up a WiFi hotspot on Android, and this guide for how to do it on Apple iOS devices.

If you are travelling from the USA, you can pick up a Three SIM card in advance of your trip here, which comes preloaded with data.

Can I use my spectrum WiFi away from home?

    Securing Your Wireless Network

Security is always important with a wireless network, it’s even more important because your network’s signal could be broadcast outside your home. If you don’t help secure your network, people with PCs nearby could access info stored on your network PCs and use your Internet connection.

To help make your network more secure:

Change the default user name and password. This helps protect your router. Most router manufacturers have a default user name and password on the router and a default network name . Someone could use this info to access your router without you knowing it. To help avoid that, change the default user name and password for your router. See the documentation for your device for instructions.

Set up a security key for your network. Wireless networks have a network security key to help protect them from unauthorized access. We recommend using Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 security if your router supports it. See the documentation for your router for more detailed info, including what type of security is supported and how to set it up.

Some routers support Wi-Fi Protected Setup . If your router supports WPS and its connected to the network, follow these steps to set up a network security key:

  • Do one of the following, depending on which version of Windows is running on your PC:

  • In Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, select Start, start typing Network and Sharing Center, and then choose it in the list.

  • Select Set up a new connection or network.
