How To Connect Two Routers To Share The Same Network Using The Second Router As An Access Point
I was having a conversation with one of our readers about a home network they were trying to wrap their minds around. They wanted devices on the opposite side of their house to connect via WiFi to the same network but their routers range didnt reach. Their walls are hard-wired to the router, and there are ports available in those rooms, but the devices are WiFi only. They were looking for a solution with the devices they had on hand so that they wouldnt have to buy more gear . What they had, was their current router, and the old one it recently replaced.
The best solution is to set up the second router to act as if it was an Access Point so that you dont have to buy one. I am going to share how it is done with you.
We, of course, take no responsibility for what happens to your devices, so only do this if you are at least somewhat experienced with playing with the settings. If something goes wrong, you may have to reset your second router to factory settings .
What you will need is two routers, an ethernet cable running between the two routers and a laptop or PC for setup . We used two Netgear WNDR3700 routers for a local test since we had them laying around. One takes the job of the main router , and the second will become your access point.
First, log into the admin screen of your main router using a PC or laptop connected to one of its LAN ports by typing the routers IP in your browser.

An ISP will use an existing network. They wont want to make multiple cables if the cable provider checks and realizes that you already have a network connection. They would want to pick whoever was the first to register. The only major problem is those rival companies may have mutual agreements prohibiting them from offering their service in households that are a part of their rivals network.
In other situations, the ISP may even reject doing so because it would be a copyright violation. Cellular ISPs are more costly than regular ISPs, but they often offer a huge geographical location and work in remote areas.
The Problem With Multiple Network Connections & Network Bridging
Many laptop and some desktop computers have both wired and wireless network adapters or cards. These two cards allow you to establish simultaneous wired and wireless connections to the campus network.
While this simultaneous connection may be useful on some home networks, it causes problems on the campus network.
You can use only one network connection at a time. Ethernet jacks on campus are set up to automatically shut off once they detect network bridging. Plugging your computer into another jack will disable that jack as well.
Note: Some computers and network adapters may use network management software other than the built-in applications included with an operating system . If you find that this is the case, the process described below will be similar, but the steps may not apply exactly. Spreading Out The Download For Speed
Its possible that some so-called download accelerators may use multiple connections to download a single file, which in turn may allow a dual WAN router to use both internet connections to speed it up. But theres another case where downloads can be significantly impacted by having multiple internet connections.
Identify Interference Problems From Other Wireless Networks With Inssider
Identifying the exact root cause for your interference problems can be quite a pain, depending on your location. If you are in a busy area with lots of wireless networks around, then your problems are most likely caused by the other networks.
So… how do you fix them? You can use a tool named inSSIDer . We covered the basics of using it in a previous tutorial: Find Hidden Wireless Networks & View Useful Information . I recommend that you read it first, before going ahead with the instructions in this article.
Let’s assume you are trying to fix interference problems in your own home. Install the tool on a laptop and fire it up. Look at the wireless networks it identifies and look at how they are set. Start somewhere close to the router and move around the house to its extremities and to the areas where you encounter most issues.
Pay attention to how wireless networks disappear from the radar or show up on it. View how your network signal evolves. In the areas where you encounter most issues, you most probably have other wireless networks active.
Then, look at the data and ask yourself the following questions:
- On which frequency is my wireless network ?
- Can I switch the router to the operating frequency where the fewest number of networks is found?
- Which channel is my network using?
- Which channels are least used by the wireless networks in my area?

How To Connect Another Building On Your Property To Your House Over Wi
We have a workshop on our property as well as our house, and are trying to get the Wi-Fi signal to the workshop. The workshop is about 200 feet away from the housewe have pine trees all around us. We have two Apple routers. We have tried to figure out if a different router would help or if we need an extender or a repeater?
Apples base stations are all designed with omnidirectional antennas, which provides the best signal in a 360-degree donut around them. Depending on the device, you can typically use it to connect as a client to the other network: it connects as if it were just another Wi-Fi device, and bridges the traffic to anything connected to its ethernet port, such as another base station.
Type Of Device And How Its Being Used
The 2.4GHz band uses longer waves, which makes it better suited for longer ranges or transmission through walls and other solid objects. Ideally, you should use the 2.4GHz band to connect devices for low bandwidth activities like browsing the Internet.
On the other hand, 5GHz is the best suited for high-bandwidth devices or activities like gaming and streaming HDTV.
The idea is to spread out your devices over the two bands so that theres less competition for the same channels. Separating your personal and Internet of Things devices can also help your WiFi security. By splitting your devices between 2.4GHz and 5GHz, you can maximize your networks performance.

One: Use The Smartphone App
Most Echo speakers, such as the and , dont have a screen, so youll need to use the Alexa companion app on your smartphone to change settings, including Wi-Fi. The app is available for both iOS and Android, and the process is identical on both and for all Echo speakers.
Open the app, then open the navigation panel in the top left corner, and select Settings at the bottom of the panel. Now select Device Settings and tap on the device you want to change networks on.
You should see an entry labelled Wi-Fi network press Change to its right. A new screen will appear inviting you to Begin Echo Setup press Continue at the bottom. Make sure your Echo device is powered on and is showing an orange light if its glowing blue, press and hold the Action button for six seconds until it changes colour.
Your smartphone may now connect to your Echo device, or you may have to manually connect through your phones Wi-Fi settings menu. Your device will have a custom-named Amazon network .
Once you are connected and back in the Alexa app, a list of available Wi-Fi networks should appear. Select the one you want and enter the password , then hit Connect. For hidden networks, scroll down to the bottom and tap Add a Network. A progress bar may appear with the message Preparing your Echo. After your device connects, a confirmation message should appear and your device is ready to use.
What Are The Different Types Of Internet Connections
ISPs can provide you Internet access in different ways:
- Digital subscriber line : This system gives you access to the internet through your existing telephone line. Its usually delivered simultaneously with wired telephone service. The users pay both their phone and internet bills to the same provider.
- Cable: This type of connection is usually offered by your cable TV provider, which uses coaxial cables to connect you to the internet. Cable internet is widely considered a faster option than DSL. Still, its also a less secure option because residential cable internet uses a line shared by everyone in your neighborhood.
- Fiber: This connection uses fiber-optic cables that can send data extremely fast and are resilient to severe weather conditions. The only downside of this option is that its not yet widely available everywhere, so youll have to contact your provider to see if you can get it.
There is also a satellite internet connection, but its rarely used and suitable for rural areas where there are no cables.
It delivers slower speeds, but it still beats having no connection.

What Affects Signal Strength
Wi-Fi communication takes place in the 2.4, 3.6 and 5 GHz frequency bands. The two most common sources of wireless network interference are 2.4 GHz cordless phones and microwave ovens.

Devices For Multiple Connections
- Using a multi-Wan router is a good idea. To enhance bandwidth, they will split traffic between the two ISPs and separate traffic by local device, outside destination, or protocol. You can also just have one as a backup.
- Keep in mind that some sites, such as banks and secure sites, do not like round robins. Youd have to add rules for those sites in that instance. This isnt going to happen very often.
- The Cisco RV402 is perhaps the most straightforward and cost-effective option. Its not the best, but its the best bargain.
- If you want more freedom, Mikrotik can handle it, but its not a straightforward setup.
- Ubiquiti can do the same. In a residence, opt for the UBNT security gateway . You can also use their lite, 3 port, and 8 port edge routers.
- Velocloud is one of the higher-end options. It aggregates traffic in their data centres, acts as a single connection, resolves the secure site issue, increases packet quality, and transforms two bad connections into one fantastic one. It is a fantastic service, but its not cheap. It costs around $900 per year to get started.

What About Cellular Internet Providers
Another example of having multiple ISPs comes from something that many people dont realize their cellular service.
Many people actually have two ISPs, technically, especially if they can turn a hotspot on for their phone. Phones, tablets, and other devices can access the internet. So, the telecommunications companies are often acting as telecom providers.
AT& T, Verizon, and other telecommunications services also provide internet access. However, they generally provide it on a per device basis, but they do have internet packages. Because these internet packages often use cellular, mobile data, they dont actually need to connect through a wired connection.
So people very commonly have multiple ISPs, in reality, because they have a wired connection and a cellular connection. And its even possible to have a wired, cellular, and satellite connection, or any assortment of these, at the same time.
Cellular ISPs tend to be more expensive than other ISPs, but they also cover a lot of territory and operate in rural areas. If you just need an internet service that is reliable, a cellular service is going to be easy to set up.
The Causes & Symptoms For Wireless Network Interference Problems
There are many possible causes for having interference problems with your wireless network:
- The physical landscape where your network is placed: the apartment, office building or house where the wireless network is found. Walls and doors interfere with the signal of your network, lower its strength and the transfer speed.
- Electronic equipment you are using: microwave ovens, cordless phones, wireless headsets, Bluetooth devices, surveillance cameras operate at the 2.4 gigahertz frequency used by most wireless networks.
- The physical distance from the router or the device emitting the wireless signal. The further away, the weaker the signal weaker. This always translates into a higher likelihood of being impacted by different kinds of interference.
- Last but not least, other wireless networks can interfere with yours.
When your wireless network has interference problems you can encounter one or more symptoms: reduced range for your WiFi network , sudden drops in transfer speeds, the wireless signal dropping out in certain places or at certain times during the day, your wireless signal strength going up and down randomly.
