WI-FI WITHOUT INTERNET: How To Get Wi-Fi Without An Internet Provider

I have to admit, this is a situation I find myself in way more than I should. In my defense, sometimes I just dont get the notification from my internet service provider politely reminding me to pay up in time to avoid being disconnected. Also, maybe I am a true Kenyan, meaning we are as last-minute as they come. So your internet subscription expired and you havent paid for your Home Internet and youre cut off from the web. Maybe youve paid but for some reason, it takes your ISP a few too many hours to complete your transaction and restore your connection. In the meantime, here are a couple of things you can do with your WiFi network without internet access.

Check With Your Internet Service Provider

Several internet service providers do provide free internet services, but they dont always make it well-known.

Some ISPs have highly discounted internet service $10 a month or cheaper!

But, they usually try to upsell you to a higher speed that you dont necessarily need.

So, always make sure you ask first about all of your options before signing up .

But, if you bundle services with the provider, theres a good chance you can get your internet for free.

Many large ISPs are starting to bundle phone, internet, and TV services together to save customers money.

Often, theyll have offers for 1 year or more of internet service free when you bundle more than one service.

If youre considering one of the other services anyway, this can be a great way to save!

Once your year of free service ends, there is usually another similar offer waiting.

Most companies will be happy to switch you to a current offer rather than risk you going to another company.

Sharing An Internet Connection

Lets be honest, quite often when we want to connect our smartphones or laptops to the internet, we do tend to scan for available Wi-Fi networks. And whenever we do that, we come across quite a few Wi-Fi networks available near us. Most are password protected, but every once in a while your luck strikes and you come across a connection that does not require a password. If that happens, you can share that open connectionthough with caution as you would with Public Wi-Fi networks.

You also have the option of reaching out to your neighborsand request them to share their connectionmay be you could offer to exchange chores, as scores of students in the U.S. prefer to do. However, it would be courteous to ask them about the kind of package they haveafter all, the last thing you need is making your neighbors incur additional cost. You can also discuss the option of splitting the bill on an internet connection with your neighbors. This way you can get Wi-Fi without an internet provider, and save money at the same time!

On the side note, friends are a better avenue to share an internet connection with. So, perhaps before you try out your neighbors, you should ask a friend and pool in for an internet connection that the two of you can share.

If you don’t need regular mobile data and instead just need occasional access to the internet on your laptop, the fastest and easiest way to get online is often to tether your smartphone.

Tethering your smartphone or tablet does have two drawbacks.

  • You’re entirely dependent on the signal of your mobile phone carrier. That’s fine if you’re in a city but less reliable if you’re out in the country.
  • Laptops typically use much more data than smartphones, meaning you could be in for a nasty surprise when your next phone bill lands in your mailbox.
  • If you have an Android device, you can enable tethering by heading to Settings > Network and Internet > Hotspot and Tethering > Wi-Fi Hotspot, then slide the toggle next to Wi-Fi Hotspot into the On position.

iOS users need to go to Settings > Personal Hotspot and slide the toggle.

On both Android and iOS, you should set a new username and password to protect the security of your hotspot.
