Why We Love Onstar Stories From Real People
Its one thing to read about OnStar and realize its a useful service that offers peace of mind while driving at a fairly reasonable price point. Its quite another to hear real stories from real people that might have ended differently had it not been for OnStar.
Ive totally used OnStar to rescue myself and girlfriends stranded on a road trip. I was eight months pregnant, a friend had a baby, and we ran out of gas on an interstate. OnStar was soooo helpful in finding us a wrecker service who went and got gas for us and brought it back.
Its a lifesaver! I was heading from chemo and had left my phone home. A friend was in town to escort me but her phone had died and I felt sick. I could barely talk and OnStar guided us to a place to pull over while dispatching the EMTs.
Literally a lifesaver. AGGTC Contributor Tomika Bryant Photo: Tomika Bryant

netsyd said:I could totally use Android Auto / Waze / etc – but so far I’m finding I absolutely hate the Android Auto interface, and it does things that bug me – like stopping you from scrolling a list in Spotify and AA wouldn’t let me see a text from my wife . I could find a mount, put it somewhere and just use the standard apps like I did in my old car, but I really like having the nav on the big screen and Speed Limit detail right in the dashboard. It’s minor I know, but we all like what we like I guess.

For $10 per month, existing AT& T subscribers can add a GM vehicle with OnStar 4G LTE to their account, essentially making the vehicle a device on the plan and allowing it to share in the accounts data. The option presents an easy way to start using the service after the 3-month, 3GB trial.
Those electing to use the monthly or one-time data plans should know that they can keep track of their data usage using the OnStar RemoteLink app or by hitting the OnStar button and asking the advisor.

How Do You Connect To The Wi
1- Before you start make sure your vehicle is running, or its ignition is switched to the accessory position. Open the Wi-Fi settings page to find information youll need for connecting to the Wi-Fi hotspot. To get your hotspot name and password, tap the Wi-Fi Settings icon on the main menu screen, or press the voice command button and say Wi-Fi Settings.
2- Take note of both the SSID or network name and the password listed on screen. Both of these are key for connecting devices to the Wi-Fi hotspot. Its a good idea to change the network name and password to something thats easier for your family to remember, you can do that changes through the available myGMC mobile app, or by pushing the blue OnStar button in your GMC and speaking with an advisor.
3-For using your mobile device, search for available wireless networks on your device and select your vehicles SSID/ network name when listed. Enter the password when prompted.
4. Your device is now connected. Your GMCs 4G LTE connection is always on and will automatically connect to your mobile devices. To manage your vehicles Wi-Fi hotspot, be sure to sign up for data usage alerts. Youre now ready to connect up to seven devices connected simultaneously.
The vehicle ignition needs to be in the Run or Accessory position for the Wi-Fi Hotspot to be active.

Gm To Get 5g Upgrade For 2024
Currently, General Motors vehicles are equipped with the OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi connectivity. This breakthrough technology enables up to seven devices to be connected inside the vehicle, using AT& Ts 4G network on the road.
In the mobile world, 4G is now considered old technology. That is why you will see newer GM vehicles get a data upgrade to 5G the fifth-generation cellular network architecture through AT& T.
Upgrading to 5G increases bandwidth between the vehicle and the available cellular network. With the addition of autonomous vehicle technology and the increase in electric mobility, greater bandwidth will be beneficial to enable a GM vehicle to utilize these technologies through better connectivity to enable key functions to work seamlessly.
With the upgrade to 5G connectivity, enhancements to the network will include:
- Improved roadway-centric coverage
- Faster music and video downloads with higher quality
- Faster, more reliable, and secure over-the-air software updates
- Faster navigation, mapping, and voice services
The roll-out of 5G connectivity on GM vehicles will start for the 2024 model year. However, owners of 2019 and newer GM vehicles with 4G LTE capabilities will experience faster connectivity speeds and many of the same performance benefits of future 5G-equipped vehicles. The upgrade will happen when the new network infrastructure becomes available to these vehicles.

How Does It Work
When you buy a new GM vehicle you get OnStar included. OnStar is whats called a telematics system, which means your car can connect wirelessly to an OnStar command center.
OnStar does some amazing things. If you remember the commercials from a few years back, youll know that you get into an accident, OnStar will alert the command center so they can send help.
It can also unlock the doors if you leave your keys inside, and it will even send you service alerts when your vehicle needs attention.
But on top of that, you can upgrade your OnStar system to set up a WiFi hotspot.
When you first set it up you give your system a unique name and password, just as you probably did with your WiFi at home. Then when you want to connect a device its the same as when youre anyplace else: find the network, enter the password and youre on.

Convenient And Always On
The fact that the OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi is active when the vehicle is on makes it that much easier to connect to the network: simply start the car, and your devices connect to the car automatically.
Contrast that with enabling the hotspot on a smartphone, each time you get in and out of the car, and the convenience of the built-in system speaks for itself.
And there are two more benefits:
- The OnStar hotspot allows you not to worry about keeping your phone charged or interrupting the phones hotspot functionality when making or receiving calls.
- When the cable network suddenly went out at out friends home during an online meeting, we used the OnStar Wi-Fi hotspot in our Chevy Silverado as a back-up, connecting to it from laptops within the house.
Simply put, the OnStar Wi-Fi hotspot is always on, always ready, and always available.
