Bandwidth & Network Speed
There are four primary links in the network chain, and all four should be considered when building out your network.
- Network Connection
Lets start with the external gateway to the internet, the ISP.
Your ISP options might be limited depending on where you are, but most ISPs have a variety of tiers of service at different price points. Its worth comparing the services available in your area to find the ISP with the best reputation, as well as the service that best aligns with your needs.
In order to find the right internet service, youll want to know the basics of what to look for. These are the metrics you should be considering when making that choice.
Bandwidth refers to the amount of data sent through your internet connection, and is measured as a number of megabits per second This is the amount of data the connection allows, but its a different metric than the speed of that connection.
Speed is separated into two measurements how quickly data can be downloaded and uploaded.
- is also measured in megabits per second or gigabits per second for significantly faster connections. Download speed refers to how quickly data is pulled from the internet to a device .
- Upload speed is how quickly data can be pushed out from your device to the internet and is also measured in Mbps and Gbps.
To simplify, bandwidth is how much data can be transferred over your connection, while speed is how quickly that data can be transferred.
Comparing Internet Service Prices
Some big-name telecom companies are notorious for overcharging customers for basic services and equipment, or even misleading consumers by hiding sneaky loopholes in their contract’s fine print to charge for services they claim are free.
Before you jump right into a contract, then, there are a number of questions you should consider in order to choose the right cable-free internet service provider :
- Is there a data cap? What happens if you exceed your monthly data cap?
- What kind of download speeds are available?
- How reliable is the connection?
- If satellite is available in your area, is your physical location conducive to good satellite reception?
- What contract lengths are available? Is there a fee for terminating service early?
- Are there additional costs?
- Will the price quoted go up after an initial introductory period?

Connect Your Router To The Modem
Chances are, you already completed this step. But if youre setting up your router for the very first time, you need this connection first before you tether your computer to the router.
If you have a standalone modem
Connect your router to your modem using an Ethernet cable. Most routers have multiple Ethernet ports, but theres one specifically labeled Internet or WAN used for connecting directly to the modem. It typically has a different color than the other Ethernet ports.
If you have a wireless gateway
Be sure that you properly secure the wireless gateway to the internet connection entering your home. The connection type depends on the internet you have.
For example, cable internet comes into your house via a coaxial cable, whereas connecting to DSL requires you to connect your modem to a filter, which then plugs into any phone jack. We provide more information about cable types below.

Install A Tv Antenna For Local Channels
One way to get around the high cost of local networks on streaming is to use an antenna. To qualify as a television, and not a monitor, a display needs to have an over-the-air tuner built-in, so you can plug in an antenna and watch broadcast networks like ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC and PBS. Reception varies widely depending on where you live, however, and unless you buy an antenna DVR like the Fire TV Recast, AirTV or TiVo Bolt OTA, you’re restricted to live-only viewing.
Over-the-air antennas are affordable and easy to install.
Consider The Size Of Your Home
The size of your home also plays a role in determining how to set up your Wi-Fi at home. Homes that contain 1,500 square feet or less should be able to get by with one Wi-Fi access point or router. However, homes between 1,500 and 3,000 square feet will require two Wi-Fi access points, and homes larger than 3,000 square feet may require three routers.

If youre currently getting your internet through a 4G or 5G phone plan but you dont want the phone part, you can switch over to a home internet plan, which uses a Wi-Fi router instead of your phone. If portability is important to you, you could also look into getting a dedicated mobile hotspot.

Is It Worth Upgrading To Wifi 6
This is an interesting question. If you dont already have a WiFi 6 device or two, fully upgrading would involve getting a new router, phone, and laptop. The only other device available that supports WiFi 6 is the Playstation 5. WiFi 6 smart TVs, streaming devices, and smart home appliances arent available yet.
WiFi 6 only really sings when there are multiple devices connected to the router. Its not worth getting a new laptop or breaking a phone contract just to upgrade now, you likely wont even notice the difference. Instead, upgrade naturally. As you replace your devices over time, youll naturally start to upgrade. Thats when youll want to look into getting a WiFi 6 router.
With that said, if youre in the market for a new router now, its worth looking into a WiFi 6 model. A WiFi 6 routers work with WiFi 5 devices, though the latter wont see any real benefits. Still, youd be futureproofed.
The same cant be said for WiFi 6e. There are only a few routers out that support it, and they are very expensive. If you want the absolute best available technology then go for it, but consider you probably wont see any advantages for two or three years.
Overall, its worth getting a WiFi 6 router now if you can. You might not notice the difference immediately, but your network will be good to go as you naturally upgrade devices. Youll have to upgrade eventually, doing it now will make life easier .

Using Your Phone Or Tablet As A Wifi Hotspot
Most smartphones and cellular tablets these days have the ability to act as a mobile WiFi hotspot. This feature shares your mobile data plan with any devices connected to the same WiFi hotspot.
There are a few important things to keep in mind if you choose to go this way. First of all, youre using data from your mobile plan to feed all the connected devices. If you have cheap data or an unlimited plan, great. If you have a small data cap or pay a lot for your data, this option may not be right for you.
If you decide to use this option to get WiFi without an internet provider, set a data limit on the device acting as the hotspot, switch your Windows 10 computer to metered connection mode and keep an eye on how much data you have left.
You also, absolutely, must set a password for your mobile hotspot. You dont want other people sucking up your data or getting on the same network as your devices. Using your mobile device as a WiFi hotspot is also a big battery drain. So hook up a power bank or wall-charger to counteract this.
One last point to know involves mobile data provider policies around tethering. While its not that common anymore, some mobile data providers dont allow you to tether your device or they charge a different rate for data when tethered. Double-check your plans policy just to be safe.

Turn Off Wifi When Ethernet Cable Is Connected
When you connect an Ethernet cable to a Windows 10 computer, it automatically connects to the internet using Ethernet connection, instead of using the WiFi Network.
However, the WiFi network still remains open on your computer and you will have to manually turn off the WiFi Network, in case you do not want both WiFi and Ethernet being active on your computer.
Depending on the type of Network adapter on your computer, it is quite possible to automate this process and make your Windows 10 computer turn OFF WiFi automatically whenever it is connected to an Ethernet cable.
Let us take a look at How to Turn OFF WiFi automatically whenever your computer is connected to an Ethernet cable.
Note: The steps provided below work only if the Network Adapter on your computer supports this feature in Windows 10.
