What Is A Wi

Most homes have devices spread throughout the house or even outside. This means that your router or gateway may not be able to serve every corner optimally. You will find smartphones spread throughout the house, a laptop in the childrens room, and smart sprinklers outside.

A Wi-Fi extender picks up the Wi-Fi signal from your router and broadcasts it further. It, therefore, boosts the Wi-Fi coverage in your home.

Most of the Wi-Fi extenders have both wired and Wi-Fi capabilities. This means you can use your Ethernet devices where the Wi-Fi extender is positioned.

This has been a game-changer with gaming devices and HD streaming devices. Ethernet connections are more reliable and generally faster as compared to wireless internet.

The Wi-Fi extender is therefore an independent device that is placed between the router/ gateway and your faraway devices and which ensures the devices get fast internet connections in areas where there would have been dead zones.

Whats A Good Wifi Speed

In most cases, youll find that this average is only about 30-60% of what is advertised. For instance, if youre paying for 8Mbps, youll normally find that your average speed is somewhere between 2-3 Mbps. Those using a 10Mbps connection usually only register between 3-4Mbps which is less than what they pay for.

Do Wifi Extenders Actually Do Anything

a2fdesigns: How Can I Boost My Spectrum Wifi Signal

WiFi extenders can, in fact, expand the range of your wireless network. But their effectiveness is limited by a host of factors, including the speed of the internet connection coming into your home, the distance from your router, the areas in your home in need of WiFi coverage, and the WiFi demands of your family.Dec 2, 2020

Other Things To Consider

Aside from my speed tests, I made sure to stream video in my bedroom on each extender’s network and I made several video calls on each network, too. I also spent time playing with each extender’s settings. You shouldn’t expect much, but most will at least make it easy to change the extension network’s name or password. Some include app controls with extra features, too.

My top pick, the TP-Link RE505X, makes it easy to tweak settings via TP-Link’s Tether app on an Android or iOS device. Again, the features make for slim pickings, but you can check signal strength or turn on High-Speed Mode, which dedicates the 2.4GHz band for traffic from the router to the range extender, leaving the 5GHz free for your normal Wi-Fi network traffic. That mode actually wasn’t as fast as sharing the 5GHz band like normal when I tested it out, because those incoming 2.4GHz speeds are limited, but it still might be a useful option in some situations.

Setting a range extender up is about as painless as it gets. Most, including all ten that I’ve tested here at home, support Wi-Fi Protected Setup, or WPS, which is a universal protocol that wireless networking devices can use to connect with each other. Just plug the range extender in and wait a minute for it to boot up, press the WPS button and then press the WPS button on your router within two minutes.

Set Up A Stronger Antenna

Setting up a stronger antenna is one of the most important things that may boost your wifi signal. Most WiFi extenders you will find in the market that come with small, weak antennas that have 45 dBi gain.

So, if you want to boost your wifi network then it will be undoubtedly better to buy a stronger antenna that has a minimum of 9 dBi gain. It will help to create an excellent wifi signal.

Take An Internet Speed Test

Taking an internet speed test isnt necessarily a solution to your slow Wi-Fi woes, but it can help you identify where the problem lies.

See how your internet speed is performing with our free speed test tool.

See Your Speed Test Results

If your internet speed test results are much slower than the speeds promised by your ISP, start with these free Wi-Fi speed boost tips. If you still hit a slow Wi-Fi roadblock after that, its time to call your ISP to see if the problem is on its end.

We recommend taking a speed test while connecting your computer, tablet, or laptop to your router with an Ethernet cable in order to get the most accurate results. But if you can only connect through Wi-Fi, no worries. Youll still get a good idea of how well your internet speed is performing.

Add An Internet Extender

How Can I Boost the Wi-Fi Signal in my RV?

A Wi-Fi extender works similarly to a Wi-Fi repeater to boost your internet signal to other rooms. The advantage is that extenders are less likely to limit your bandwidth than Wi-Fi repeaters, and they provide connected devices with a strong internet connection. A powerline Ethernet kit uses a wired link to your router to provide Wi-Fi signals to other devices in your home. Because its wired, it doesnt use additional Wi-Fi bandwidth to communicate.

A powerline Ethernet kit is usually a good way to boost internet for basement gaming equipment or devices in a garage. Since it requires wiring, though, its not the best internet boosting solution for everyone.

How Do I Find The Strongest Wifi Signal

To check the strength of your Wi-Fi, the first thing to do is look at the device having issues. Whether its using iOS, Android, Mac, or Windows, you should have a Wi-Fi connection indicator. Usually, four or five curved lines make up the Wi-Fi symbol, and the more that are filled, the stronger the connection.

Why Does Spectrum Internet Slow Down At Night

Like many other internet service providers, Spectrum Internet can slow down at peak time as well if there are a lot of users on the internet at the same time. Peak hours for internet activity happen between 5 PM. and 12 PM. on weeknights, but Spectrum and other ISP speeds can also slow during other high-traffic times as well.

Why Is My Spectrum Internet Speed So Slow

There are many reasons your Internet connection might appear slow. It could be a problem with your modem or router, Wi-Fi signal, signal strength on your cable line, devices on your network saturating your bandwidth, or even a slow DNS server. These troubleshooting steps will help you pin down the cause.

Your freeloading neighbors will now have to search elsewhere. WPA encryption is much harder to hack than WEP, so go with WPA for your password. You can check if someone other than you is using your WiFi. Make sure your network, gaming console, and everything else using the Internet is turned off. Look to see if the wireless light is still blinking. If so, you may have a leech to deal with. Use a program like MoocherHunter to find real-time users of your wireless network.

Use Latest Wifi Protocol

Wireless AC has pretty much become the standard, but if you have not yet upgraded to a Wireless AC router and are still using Wireless G or N, you may want to consider upgrading. Wireless AC has proven to be a much more capable technology that not only produces greater WiFi range, but improved and more consistent signal strength as well.

Of course, a Wireless AC router will be most efficient with Wireless AC devices. If you are using a newer device with a built-in wireless card, such as a laptop, check to see what wireless protocol it supports.

Its also worth noting that after AC, there will be AD, AH, AJ, AX and so on. You dont always have to be using the latest protocol, but you also dont want to be several protocols behind. Wireless N and AC also support MIMO, which allows for multiple antennas.

Where Is Your Router In Your Home

The next consideration that you need to look at is where you are keeping your router. It is a common mistake to stash your router away so that it is out of the way. The flashing lights can be distracting and depending on the type that you have, it might take up a lot of room. But, putting your router somewhere out of the way is a mistake.

WiFi signals can easily be obstructed by furniture, humans, and other obstacles. The more the signal has to pass through something to reach the destination, the slower it is going to be. It is ideal to have your router in a central location in your home, where the signal can travel outward in all directions.

Likewise, do not put your router in a basement as the signal has a better time traveling downward than it does upward. If you are irritated at the size of your router, consider getting one that is smaller and much easier to conceal.

Where Should A Wifi Extender Be Placed

How to Boost Your Wireless Signal

We all want to get the best coverage for our homes. However, the positioning of the Wi-Fi extender is important in making sure that our homes get the best Wi-Fi coverage.

To make it easier for you, some of the newer models of Wi-Fi extenders have a light or an app that can help in ensuring you position your extender in the best place.

However, if your Wi-Fi extender does not have the positioning features, it is best to place the extender midway between your router and where your wireless coverage starts to drop.

This ensures that your Wi-Fi extender can pick the signal comfortably and boost it. Placing the extender too near the dead zone means that you will not get the best internet speed.

Laptop Will Not Connect To Charter Spectrum Wifi

We receive a lot of questions about this issue. Your Charter Spectrum Internet gateway is a great device, but it has a lot on its plate. It handles WiFi, internet, and much more- which is a lot for a single device.

While this doesnt mean that the supplied router that you received with your internet is no good at all, you can certainly get better performance from a standalone WiFi solution, which we covered in our best mesh devices for Charter Spectrum article.

You will encounter two scenarios if this is your issue.

    • It appears that WiFi is available, but you are unable to connect.
    • There is no WiFi connection.

If you fall into the first category, there are a few things you can do.

In general, 2.4GHz networks have better range, but slower speeds, while 5GHz networks have faster speeds but a lesser range.

The first thing you want to check is that your WiFi is actually working.

Are you trying to connect your laptop to Charter Spectrum WiFi only, or do you have additional devices connected? If there are other devices that are connecting just fine, then your laptop is the most likely culprit.

Try rebooting your laptop, updating your WiFi device drivers, and checking if Windows updates have recently been installed.

In some cases you can uninstall the latest Windows update to restore Windows back to its previous state. If the update caused a WiFi driver issue then this should resolve that issue.
