Giving Your Wifi Password To Guests Is Like Giving Them The Keys To The Store
At coffee shops, restaurants, and retail stores, guests are freely given the password to connect to WiFi. This type of access allows anyone to openly browse the network. As a result, an intrusive guest now has access to point-of-sale systems, printers, credit card machines and back-office systems. In addition, customers can see other guest devices that are connected to the network. For obvious reasons, this is bad.
Most off-the-shelf or ISP-provided WiFi equipment was not designed for guest access and is extremely insecure. WiFi with guest access is designed for home WiFi systems, where there may be shared printers or other shared resources. However, offering WiFi as a guest amenity should not allow sharing between devices. It should offer the guest one thing and one thing only safe and secure Internet access.
Rather than giving away your WiFi password, consider implementing a captive portal system with WiFi marketing enabled. Not only will your in-house network be more secure, you will be able to customize the login experience for your guests, collect user demographics, and use your existing WiFi network to increase customer loyalty.
Smart WiFi with device isolation helps secure your network and blocks devices from seeing each other. In addition, Smart WiFi gives you control over how much data your guests can use and it allows you to adjust the time that theyre allowed online. Take control of your business guest WiFi today.
Make Sure Both Devices Are Connected To Bluetooth
Both devices need to be connected to Bluetooth in order for Wi-Fi password sharing to work. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings and tap Bluetooth. Make sure the switch next to Bluetooth at the top of the screen is on. If its already on, try quickly turning the switch off and on again.
On Macs, open System Preferences and click Bluetooth. Make sure that it says Bluetooth: On. If Bluetooth is already on, click Turn Bluetooth Off, wait a few seconds, then click Turn Bluetooth On.

Android 10 will also let you add smart-home devices — including internet-of-things devices — to the Wi-Fi network you manage via a QR code on a sticker or display you scan with your Android camera app. Note that the device needs to support the Easy Connect Wi-Fi standard for this to work.

First: Create A Guest Network
Ideally, you dont want to give people access to your main Wi-Fi network. This will give their laptop or phone access to all the devices in your home, which means theyor any malware installed on their systemcan compromise sensitive data on your personal devices. Instead, you should create a separate guest network that will allow them to access the internet but keep them separate them from the other devices in your home.
Most routers have this ability built in. Head to your routers administrator page by typing 192.168.1.1 in your address bar. If you arent sure of the correct numbers, check the sticker on the bottom of your router, or open up its user manual. Look for an option in the settings called Guest Network, and set it up with a WPA2 password if you can. Some routers only allow open guest networks, which Id recommend against, since they allow good-for-nothing rogues to snoop on your guests traffic. You should also make sure you block guest access to local network devices and prevent them from accessing your routers settings, if those options exist.
Thats just the tip of the iceberg, though, and in many cases, you can avoid having your guests type in a password at all.
