    Consider this familiar scenario: You have a 2 story house with your Internet connection and wireless router in one corner of the bottom floor.     Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E, also known as the 802.11ax protocol, are available in higher-end computers, networking devices, and phones and tablets.     Wi-Fi is just as essential as running water for many people, especially those who work from home. So when it’s slow or keeps dropping out – and ruining your Zoom call or interrupting your Spotify stream – it can be very frustrating indeed.

    Your situation may be even worse than this: no signal at all in some parts of the house, or such a weak connection that it’s not good enough for loading a web page, let alone checking who’s at the front door via your video doorbell.

    These Wi-Fi ‘black spots’ are most often caused by too much distance from the wireless router , thick brick or stone walls, and interference from other devices.

    There are several ways you can fix this, but it all depends upon how much money you want to spend and where the problem areas are. Here are the main six ways to extend your Wi-Fi:

  • Move your existing router to a better position
  • Buy a new, better router
  • Buy a powerline networking adapter set with Wi-Fi
  • Switch to 2.4GHz from 5GHz
  • Now let’s look in more detail at each of those options.

    Is A Range Extender Good For Wi

    Most range extenders will put out their own separate network — usually the name of your original network with “_EXT” added to the end, or something like that. Having a separate network like that under the same roof as your main network could potentially cause a small amount of interference, but I haven’t seen any noticeable slowdowns on my main network during any of these tests.

    That said, keep an eye out for client devices that automatically connect to whichever network offers the best signal at the time. If you’ve used a device like that on both your main network and the extender’s network, then it’s possible that your device will jump from one to the other without you realizing it. For instance, if your laptop is on your main network and you move a bit closer to the extender than the router, then your laptop might lose its connection and jump over to the range extender’s network for the stronger signal strength, even though the speeds on that extender network might be slower.
