  • Press and hold the Alt key while clicking on the Wi-Fi icon on your status menu.
  • On the list of available networks, find the name of the network you are connected to, and the connection information including RSSI will be displayed immediately below.

Just right-click the wireless connection and choose Connect / Disconnect to see the Wi-Fi strength. On Linux systems, you should be able to use the following command to have the terminal window output the signal level: iwconfig wlan0.View Signal Strength Windows® 10. If your device isnt running Windows 10, refer to the Windows 8 instructions. From the Windows desktop, view the signal indicator located in the taskbar . The signal indicator varies depending upon the active connection type .If you want to check out just where you are at in raw numbers, you can check the status screen in Androids menu. Just pull up the menu, scroll down and select About Phone, then select Status. On this screen you will be able to see your signal displayed in dBm as well as ASU.Start with security settings. Pick a strong password and use WPA2 encryption to protect yourself against hackers and people looking for free WiFi access. Then, open NetSpot or other WiFi signal strength app and see which channel other wireless networks in your area use.

Getting A Poor Signal Get Rid Of Obstacles

If you have measured the received signal strength at a particular spot and deemed it to be too weak, there are a few things you can do, and some things you absolutely should not do.

First of all: Do not try to boost the signal strength sent from your access point, by replacing the antenna, building your own antenna booster or similar. You risk worsening your coverage further, tripping up your neighbors, and in some cases even breaking the law.

A number of factors influence the signal strength you receive, but single most important thing you can do for your wireless coverage without adding or replacing equipment is not hiding your access point away.

What You’re Testing: Upload And Download Speeds

When it comes time to test your home Wi-Fi network, you’re looking for two basic measurements: Download speed and upload speed. The former measures the speed of data travelling to your home network, which you need to do things like:

  • Check your email and open or save attachments.
  • Browse the Internet on anything from your laptop to your tablet to your smart TV.
  • Stream video on services like Netflix or Amazon Instant Video, or stream music.
  • Update software and video games to their latest versions.
  • Save files from the cloud to your computer or smart device.

Upload speed measures the inverse of download speedit gauges how fast you can send data from your network to others. Youll use it to:

  • Add files to cloud storage services such as Google Drive or OneDrive.
  • Attach files to outgoing emails.
  • Send out a live video stream, as you would on Skype, FaceTime, or Periscope.
  • Uploading pictures from your phone to Facebook or Instagram.

When you run a speed test, you’ll also see a measurement of your ping, which is basically your Wi-Fi’s response time. For all you hardcore PS4, Wii U, and Xbox One fans, this is a crucial measurement for online gaming. Ping is measured in milliseconds, so a low number is good news.

Let’s Test The Speed To Your Device

This test will measure the speed from secured third party test servers to this computer. Results are often lower than plan speeds due to Wifi conditions and device specific capabilities.

1.Use one device. Before you start the test, make sure that any other devices in your home that are connected to the Internet, like an iPad, Xbox, or a Smart TV are turned off. Testing your speed while using other devices simultaneously may impact the accuracy of the results.

2.Connect directly to your modem. For the best test result, make sure your computer is connected directly to your modem, rather than your router. Accessing the Internet on a wireless device via a router may impact the speed of your connection.

3.Stay up-to-date. If you have a computer running an older version of a Windows or Mac operating system, this may impact your test results. You may want to consider updating.

How To Test Upload Speed

Check Home WIFI Strength

Upload speed is tested by reversing the sequence of the download analysis. Again multiple connections are opened to the test server. Instead of downloading a file, a large file of random data is created on your device and pushed through all connections to the server. Pushing the data to the server over the network via multiple streams ensures that the maximum throughput is measured. Again, recording the data throughput against time yields the available internet speed for uploading data.

How Can I Measure My Internet Speed

Ookla Speedtest is one of the most popular internet speed test services. This service can measure the ping response of your connection, as well as the upload and download speed of the remote server. For upload and download speeds, measurements are given in bits per second. The higher the number, the better.

How To Test: Browser

The quickest, easiest, and most painless way to gauge your Wi-Fi speed is to use a free, browser-based test like the one offered by Internet metrics company OOKLA at With about 8 billion tests under its belt, OOKLA has more data to back speed comparisons than any other tester out there. Speedtest and similar browser-based apps work by downloading and uploading a small amount of data, then measuring the speed of the transfersimple as that.

The best part? Taking a test like this one is as easy as visiting the site and clicking a button. Just watch the needle move and wait for your download, upload, and ping results.

If your internet seems slow or web pages wont load, the problem could be your Wi-Fi connection. Perhaps youre too far from the source, or thick walls are blocking the signal. Heres how to check your precise Wi-Fi signal strength.

The More Advanced Method To Check Wi

Pin on tech

Looking at bars in a symbol will only tell you so much. If you want to dig deeper into the strength of your Wi-Fi, youll need to use an app or program to measure its decibels relative to a milliwatt .

You can measure a Wi-Fi signal in multiple ways. The most accurate measurement is milliwatts , but its also the hardest to read due to the number of decimal places . Received Signal Strength Indicator is another option, but Wi-Fi vendors handle it inconsistently and with varying scales. Decibels relative to milliwatt avoids these problems, and many manufacturers convert RSSI to dBm anyway, so well cover that measurement.

The first thing to know is measurements of dBm will display in negative numbers. The scale runs from -30 to -90. If you see -30, you have a perfect connection, and likely, are standing next to the Wi-Fi router. However, if you spot a Wi-Fi signal listed at -90, the service is so weak you probably cant connect to that network. An excellent connection is -50 dBm, while -60 dBm is likely good enough to stream, handle voice calls, and anything else.

To measure Wi-Fi signal strength on your phone or tablet, you can use the Airport Utility App for iPhone and iPad, or Wi-Fi Analyzer for Android. Both are easy to use and show results for any wireless networks in your area.

For Android users, Wi-Fi Analyzer is a step easier. Open the app and look for the networks found. Each entry will list strength as dBm.

To do this, click the wireless icon on your taskbar. It appears in the notification area to the left of the clock.

Note: If you dont see the wireless icon, the taskbar might have hidden it. Click the up-arrow icon on the taskbar to reveal all hidden icons.

Find your Wi-Fi network in the list. Its the network that Windows says you are Connected to.

Youll see a small signal icon next to your Wi-Fi network. This icon represents the signal strength of your network. The more bars this icon has, the better your Wi-Fi signal is.

Tip: If youre wondering how the strength of your Wi-Fi signal changes in different places throughout your home or another building, you can walk around with a laptop and see how the signal changes in different areas. The strength of your signal depends on many factors, including the placement of your router and where you are located relative to it.

You can also check the signal quality of other Wi-Fi networks using this menu. Just look at the signal icon for any network.

What Is Considered A Good Acceptable Or Poor Wi

Note though that Wi-Fi signal strength is measured in decibel milliwatts usually indicated with negative values.

A -30 dBm is the maximum Wi-Fi signal strength. Anything down to -50 dBm is considered excellent signal strength. A -60 dBm to -67 dBm signal strength is reliable.

At -70 dBm you have a not so strong signal thats only suitable for light browsing and email. Further down to -80 dBm the signal is quite unreliable and you can barely connect to the network. -90 dBm signal strength is the weakest Wi-Fi signal and chances are you cant even connect to the network at this level.

How To Test Download Speed

The download measurement is performed by opening multiple connections to a server and simultaneously starting the download of a large data file on all connections. This approach ensures that the entire bandwidth of the internet connection is maxed out, and thereby the maximum data throughput can be measured. Recording the data throughput against measurement time finally yields the available internet speed for downloading data.
