How To Use Wifi Calling
Once you enable WiFi calling on your iPhone, it will automatically switch from your cellular network to WiFi whenever you are connected to a WiFi network. However, if you lose the WiFi signal at any point, your call will automatically switch back to your cellular network.
You will know when you are using WiFi calling if you see the word Wi-Fi instead of Mobile next to your carriers name in the top-left corner of your lock screen.
Its also worth pointing out that you cannot use your iPhones personal hotspot when making a call over WiFi. To turn this off, go to Settings > Personal Hotspot and tap the slider next to Allow Others to Join.
The Steps That Led To Wi
When I sold iPhones for Apple, I used to tell customers, Phone calls and your wireless data connection to the internet are completely separate. They use different antennas and connect on different frequencies.
And thats no longer true.
The technology behind making phone calls didnt change for years because it didnt have to. People were using more and more data, not making more phone calls, so wireless carriers focused on the quality of the internet connection.
Think about it. All of the wireless carrier TV commercials for the last several years have focused around one theme: Faster, more reliable internet. The wireless carriers sell you on what theyre pouring money into.
Why didnt people stop and say, Hey, the voice quality on my iPhone stinks! It wasnt just iPhones it was every mobile phone. For years, weve been streaming CD-quality music on our iPhones. So why do our loved ones voices sound like theyre coming through an AM radio?
How To Activate Wi
Wi-Fi Calling lets you make and receive calls and send messages over a Wi-Fi connection when your mobile network signal isn’t available. For this feature to work, your phone must be connected to a Wi-Fi network, have an active SIM card inserted, and Wi-Fi calling must be enabled by your network provider.
Please note: Wi-Fi Calling may not be available depending on your network and device
There are two ways to activate Wi-Fi Calling, through the Quick settings panel or through the Phone app.
Please note: If you can’t see the menu options below on your phone, please contact your network provider to check that Wi-Fi Calling is available on your network and activated for your device.

How To Tell If You Are Using Wi
You can make an iPhone Wi-Fi call once you see the word Wi-Fi beside the TELUS network name on the status bar of your device. For Android devices, you will see the Wi-Fi calling icon on the status bar of your device. Wi-Fi Calling uses the same native dialler and contact list on your device as for cellular, for your convenience.
If you do not see the Wi-Fi calling text or icon, view our support article on frequently asked questions.
The First Major Step: Lte Voice
When the iPhone 6 was released, Verizon, AT& T, and other carriers introduced LTE Voice, which represented a fundamental shift in the way we make phone calls. Instead of using the old cellular voice-only bands to make phone calls, iPhones were now capable of using their LTE data connection to make phone calls over the internet.
Its important to note that Apple, AT& T, and Verizon havent been able to agree on what to call this technology. Apple calls it Voice over LTE , AT& T calls it HD Voice, and Verizon calls it either Advanced Calling or HD Voice. No matter which term you see, they all mean the same thing.
I remember the first time I spoke with my friend David Brooke using LTE Voice. Again, the difference in call-quality was astounding. He had just purchased a new Samsung Galaxy, and my iPhone 6 was only a few months old. It sounded like we were standing in the same room. And we hadnt done anything special it just worked.
You may have experienced this too. If the phone calls you make to some people are crystal-clear and others arent, now you know why: Youre talking with other people using LTE Voice.
LTE voice sounds so much better than traditional cellular technology because it uses the technology that wireless carriers have been upgrading for the last several years: Your iPhones connection to the internet.

Where Will I Be Able To Use Wi
You will be able to use Wi-Fi Calling in any location in Canada that is out of cellular coverage and has a Wi-Fi network you can connect to. These places include basements, in buildings, underground, hospitals, warehouses and stores. Since you may experience weak cell reception in these areas, Wi-Fi Calling will allow you to use your phone in a Wi-Fi connected area as if you were still connected to a mobile network.
Note: Call quality is based on the strength of the Wi-Fi connection. For the best quality, establish a connection with your mobile network.
What Are The Benefits Of Using Wi
The main benefit of Wi-Fi calling is that you can use any Wi-Fi connection to make calls. Unlike your mobile phone service, Wi-Fi calling is not tied to any specific carrier or network. This means you can make Wi-Fi calls using your home or office Wi-Fi connection, as well as Wi-Fi networks found in cafes, libraries, or airports.
As long as your phone can connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot, you can make a call. But with most things in life, Wi-Fi calling has its pros and cons.
Just like a regular phone call, you can use your phone’s key pad to dial and your number is displayed to receivers.
Wi-Fi calls to U.S. numbers are free, even when calling from overseas. You can also make video calls with other HD Voice capable phones, so you can see friends and family from afar.
Wi-Fi calling only works with HD Voice compatible devices. Many older models of Android smartphones don’t support Wi-Fi calling.
Not all carriers offer Wi-Fi calling. For example, pre-paid services that rely on other networks may not offer it. Be sure to check with the specific provider.
Wi-Fi calling to non-U.S. numbers are subject to your plan’s long-distance charges. They are not automatically free.
Wi-Fi calls to non-U.S. numbers may result in additional charges. Check your specific phone plan for details.

How To Check If Your Android Smartphone Supports Wi
Want to know if your Android is Wi-Fi calling compatible? Finding out if your existing smartphone will support Wi-Fi calling is not always a straightforward matter. This is especially true if you have an older phone or if you’re on a pre-paid plan and want to switch to a network that supports Wi-Fi calling.
In this case, you’ll have to do a model check on your Android phone. Some carriers allow you to enter your phone’s IMEI number online to check compatibility with their services. Sometimes it’s easier to call the provider to check if your specific Android model is supported. If it isn’t, you may have to buy a new smartphone.
To find out if a mobile service provider supports Wi-Fi calling, you can check their website for details or call. You want to make sure a given carrier supports the service before signing up for a plan. Some pre-paid plans â even ones that run on the back of networks that do support Wi-Fi calling â may not offer Wi-Fi calling to their subscribers.
Most of the newer smartphones offered for sale through the major mobile service providers support HD Voice, the technology which allows you to make Wi-Fi calls.
What Do I Need To Make A Wifi Call
There are three key requirements of WiFi calling: a telco that provides the feature, a compatible smartphone and a WiFi connection. The last of those three requirements is the easiest and simply requires you to connect to a local network with your phone. You dont even need a fancy app to get it going.
Having a compatible smartphone is critical, though, so use the lists below as a guide, but reach out to your telco if youre unsure about your own handset.
Youll need one of the following handsets if youre with Telstra:
- Apple iPhone 6 or newer
- Apple Watch 3 or newer
- Samsung Galaxy S7 or newer
- Samsung Galaxy Note 5 or newer
- Google Pixel 2 or newer
- LG G6 or newer
Optus has a more comprehensive list of supported handsets for WiFi calls:
The steps are slightly different for Android phones:
- Open your Android phones calling app
- Tap the three dots or More option
- Select Settings
- Enable WiFi calling
Follow these steps again and disable WiFi calling in the final step if you want to turn the feature off.

Yes you can. Certain charges may apply, though. Here are the details:
If you’re travelling outside of Canada and using Wi-Fi Calling, all the messages and calls you receive will be taken from your plan’s voice minutes and messaging limits. Same goes for all messages and calls you make or send to a Canadian number. In either case, you wont incur long distance or roaming charges.

If you’ve already incurred this charge, then all outgoing Wi-Fi Calling calls and messages made or sent within the 24-hour period will be deducted from the Fido Roam allocation.
- Outgoing Wi-Fi calls to a non-Canadian number outside the destination you are roaming in will incur applicable Long-Distance charges in addition to the Fido Roam Daily charge.
Pay-Per-Use rates: If you dont have Fido Roam or roaming add-on, your outgoing Wi-Fi Calling messages and calls to a non-Canadian number will be charged based on standard roaming Pay-Per-Use rates.

WiFi Calling on the iPhone is a really useful feature, it is very easy to set up and once it has been set up it is easy to use when you need it.
The WiFi Calling feature is designed to work automatically when you need it and make sure you can receive and make calls over WiFi when there are issues with cellular signals on your iPhone. This is a great feature that can ensure you can still make and receive calls even in poor signal areas as long as you have access to WiFi.
It can be used to make and receive calls over a WiFi network when you would not normally be able to make a normal call because of a low or no cellular signal. This can be very handy in areas where there is poor cellular coverage, but you have WiFi access

How To Set Up Wi
When Wi-Fi calling becomes available on your iPhone, a pop-up appears that says Enable Wi-Fi Calling?, and youll be able to choose Cancel or Enable. The blurb underneath the title makes two main points:
- When you connect to any Wi-Fi network, your iPhone sends your location to your wireless carrier so they can charge you international calling rates, even though youre not using international cell towers. Wait, what?
- For short code calls , your location is sent along with the call / text because the company who owns 46645 in the US might be different than the company who owns 46645 in Lichtenstein.
You can also turn on Wi-Fi calling at any time by going to Settings -> Phone -> Wi-Fi Calling and tapping the switch next to Wi-Fi Calling On This iPhone.
When you set up Wi-Fi calling for the first time, youll be greeted by a screen that says, With Wi-Fi Calling, you can talk and text in places where mobile coverage is limited or unavailable. Tap Continue.
