How To Get Wi
Given how long and boring a car ride can be, it wouldnt hurt to have Wi-Fi onboard. Along with streaming playlists and jamming to their beats, you can watch a show or movie, or if youre so inclined, play a game. It really improves the quality of your journey and puts everyone in a good moodso definitely worth considering, especially now that it is more easily accessible than ever before.
Having ready internet access available on the go is a game-changer. And realizing this, many car manufacturers have been working to incorporate the feature into their automobile lines. Most newer models in the market now come equipped with a car Wi-Fi hotspot. So for those of you looking for a new car to ride, access to in-car Wi-Fi shouldnt be a problem at all. But then again, you dont need to upgrade your car to get this feature, rather you can get it installed with relative ease.
Here, well discuss what you need to know about accessing the internet in a car so buckle up! By the end of this article, youll have the information you need to take your commute to a whole new level.
Get A 4g Dongle Or Pebble
If you have a smartphone with tethering, why would you ever use a dongle, pebble or Mi-Fi adapter? That’s a good question. Here’s the answer.
For starters, there’s the simplicity. Once you have a dedicated Wi-Fi hotspot in your car it’s just there all the time. You don’t need to remember to bring your smartphone or enable tethering, and it doesn’t matter who’s driving or onboard. You’ll always have that hotspot.
You may also actually save money, depending on your existing smartphone contract and data usage. For instance, the network 3 will do you a Huawei Mi-Fi pebble with 2GB of data for £8 a month. £14 a month ups that to 5GB, and £21 a month gets you 20GB. All the major networks offer data-only packages, so shop around.
Setup-wise, for ease of use you’ll want the device hooked into a USB socket or the car’s 12V power, either via a 12V socket or wired directly in. The latter would require professional fitting, but can be worthwhile with older cars that have limited power sockets available. Location-wise, glove boxes and centre consoles work well with regards to reception, and help to keep in-car cable clutter to a minimum.

The Mobile Hotspot: An Alternative To Wifi In The Car
Modern smartphones are now largely equipped with a hotspot feature, also called tethering in specialist circles. By using this, a smartphone can allow additional devices to use its own mobile connection.
The same applies to laptops and tablets: in some models for example in some iPads you can insert a SIM card directly other devices can be retrofitted with a surf stick via the USB slot.
Unfortunately, there are also disadvantages when using the mobile hotspot method:
- Tethering consumes a relatively large amount of power, which you should bear in mind before starting your journey. In older cars that do not have a USB port for charging, an adapter that connects to the cigarette lighter will help.
- The use of multiple devices consumes more data volume. If your tariff is not designed for this, you will either have to book extra volume or be prepared to reduce the speed at which you surf the internet. Purchasing a second SIM card with a separate data plan may possibly prove worthwhile.
- When using a laptop, the space requirement can be a problem. As they usually have to be opened in order to provide a hotspot.
Which Phones And Networks Support Wifi Hotspots
The majority of Android or iOS phone on the market can be turned into a WiFi hotspot, but youll need to make sure your mobile plan supports it. Most of the business plans and many of the consumer plans from the biggest US national networks include the hotspot feature one way or another. For the international markets, the situation varies depending on the country and local providers.
Note that there might be a limitation of use, as the networks typically limit hotspot access to a maximum of 10GB to 15GB a month at full speed. In other words, the advice is to check your network provider rules for the hotspot.

Use Old Hardware As An In
While portable hotspots and dedicated in-car 4G routers are expensive, you have cheaper options available.
For example, if you have an old phone, you could use this instead of your main device. Just leave it connected to your car’s charge port, maybe secure with tape or Velcro, and keep it hidden. Only share its existence with your passengers. Plus, you have a spare phone to use in an emergency.
Alternatively, you could rely on a mobile dongle. While such devices are rare these days, they can be found on eBay, or at the back of a drawer.
Importantly, mobile dongles only require a USB power source. So, you could take a few minutes to set one up manually with your laptop, then connect it to your car’s USB port. Whenever your car is running, the USB port will be powered, and the hotspot active.
It’s not a perfect solution, but it works.
What To Consider When Adding Wifi
When adding WiFi to your car there are quite a few things to consider. First off, your need for it can be very dependant on your journey time and how many passengers you usually have with you. It would make sense, for example, to invest in car Wifi if you often go on family trips for the kids to be able to use it or if you take friends with you in the car regularly. However, the main issue can be the cost of actual data, as the cost for data can rack up massively if you have not opted for a large or unlimited data plan. These are all things to consider before you come to make the decision of having WiFi installed in the car. If you live rurally, you may also need to consider which network is best for you as certain networks can be better in certain locations, or on the contrary, it may turn out that it’s better than your broadband, who knows! All-in-all Car Wifi is a great idea and beneficial to many drivers, however, you do have to weigh up the pros and cons for your personal self.

A Better Way To Get Wi
by Suzanne Kantra on October 29, 2014in , , , , , ::
For my kids, Internet access is a basic utility like electricity or water. They expect their tablets, laptops and smartphones to always be connected. And why shouldn’t they? More and more of the apps they use require Internet access to workeven those that don’t really need it for gameplay. And many of us are buying low-cost Chromebooks, and now HP’s new line of Stream Windows laptops, that are designed to primarily run online apps.
Internet access isn’t a problem at home, but we don’t have Wi-Fi in our home away from home, our car. For now, I commandeer one of our three car chargers and use my smartphone to put up a Wi-Fi hotspot. But there’s a better way to get Internet access in your carhave it built in.
You get better reception when you have 4G LTE Wi-Fi built into your car than you do on your smartphone. That’s because car makers are able to use a bigger and better antenna than smartphone makers can cram inside your phone. And, you never have to worry about your phone running out of battery or experience the aggravation of having the person with the hotspot phone leave the car, cutting off Internet access and the kids’ movie streaming off of Netflix.
So if you’re in the market for a new car, built-in Wi-Fi is an option worth considering. Learn more about 4G LTE Wi-Fi on Chevrolet.com.
