How Does Wireless Wifi Work

How Should Be A Good Portable Hotspot

How does WiFi work? | Wireless Internet Part-1

Remember a portable hotspot creates a WiFi network as an access point so you are going to be online as long as you are in the device range. First, Pocket WiFi should be small and light. It must literally fit in your pocket.

Second, its battery should last more time because the Pocket WiFi has its own source of power.

In this order, you should also find one portable WiFi which has compatibility with 4G LTE networks.

Otherwise, you may lose the connection when you more need it. A good device has USB charging ports and microSD ports, thus you can introduce several SIM card formats.

Then if you acquired a good mobile hotspot, you wouldnt feel its weight and its battery would be autonomous. Some of them do not have an internal battery, so they need to be plugged. Its coverage should be wider and the navigation would be faster.

With a good product, you can even have an extra shared storage. Since the Pocket WiFi allows you to share microSD cards or USB memories.

What Routers Work With Verizon

Verizon’s Actiontec router is commonly used with Verizon’s broadband service, but you can use Verizon’s broadband router for alternative cable services. The router connects to the cable manufacturer’s coaxial cable and you configure the router for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol to get the IP settings for your cable TV service.

Features To Consider When Shopping For The Best Wifi Router

Router Speed:

Today’s high-performing devices demand speed, and plenty of it. Without sufficient speeds, your HD movies wont have crisp resolution, and your games will pause due to buffering. Thankfully, the best wifi routers have become much faster in recent years:

  • Routers using the 802.11n standard released in 2007 transmit about 450 megabits per second .
  • With the introduction of 802.11ac in 2012, WiFi was sped up considerably, running as fast as 1300 Mbps on the 5GHz band.
  • In 2015, WiFi was accelerated once again with the MU-MIMO standard. These models can reach speeds up to 1.7 Gbps, or about 1700 Mbps.
  • Consider the number of people who will be simultaneously using your wireless network when deciding what speed is best for you, as well as the type of activity that is common in your household. If youve got a house full of Netflix addicts and online gamers, MU-MIMO is definitely the way to go.

When comparing routers, you’ll see that some models have antennas protruding from the case, while others do not. Routers with internal antennas look more elegant on a bookcase or table, but those with external antennas can give you stronger signals. If you have multiple antennas, you can adjust them to better deliver coverage to each floor of your home, from the basement to the upstairs bedrooms.

Understanding What Wifi Is And How It Really Works

Did you know that WiFi was an accident? An Australian scientist, John OSullivan, wanted to prove one of Stephen Hawking’s black hole theories correct. He and his team were developing a tool that could identify and filter specific radio waves. Unfortunately, the tool they created didn’t help in finding black hole radio waves. Fast-forward a few years, John OSullivan was working for the CSIRO . His project was to find a way for computers to communicate wirelessly. He went back to his failed invention modified and tweaked it. Viola, thanks to John OSullivan and his team, WiFi was invented.

WiFi was created in the 90s. Now many years have passed and many people dont really know what WiFi is or how it works. Most of us just associate it with being internet, but thats not entirely correct. Yes, WiFi devices provide internet access but they are not the internet.

We will be diving into everything WiFi, from what it is, how it works, to different WiFi devices you can use in areas where traditional internet is not available.

What Frequencies Do Wi

As previously mentioned, Wi-Fi networks tend to operate at either 2.4 or 5 GHz. This usually adapts depending on the amount of data being sent by the user.

The IEEE 802.11 standard sets out the following standards for Wi-Fi types:-

  • 802.11a is the standard used to denote the use of frequencies of 5 GHz. This allows for the transmission of up to 54 megabits a second. It uses a complex technique, known as OFDM for generating the wireless signal.
  • 802.11b transmits data at a frequency of around 2.4 GHz. This is on the “slower” end of Wi-Fi data transmission rates and is usually enough to send about 11 megabits a second. It has a range of up to 150 feet and is today largely redundant.
  • 802.11g transmits data also at 2.4 GHz but can allow the transmission of a maximum of 54 megabits a second. It uses the same OFDM as 802.11b and is backward compatible with older standards.
  • The more recent 802.11n, a newer standard, is able to transmit 140 megabits and operates and 5 GHz. Introduced in 2009 it is also termed Wi-Fi 4. This standard use uses MIMO where multiple transmitters/receivers operate simultaneously at one or both ends of the link.
  • 802.11ac, or Wi-Fi 5, is one of the newest of the pack and has data transfer rates of between 433 Mbps and 1 gigabit per second. It works solely within the 5GHz range and can support up to eight spatial streams. It also uses the MIMO technique introduced with 802.11n.
  • 802.11ax – This is the newest iteration and promises to be a gamechanger.

Wifi Started In Hawaii

Or at least, the early precursor to WiFi did. ALOHAnet was a pioneering computer networking system, developed at the University of Hawaii, that provided the first public demonstration of a wireless packet data network.

That was in 1971. It wasnât until 20 years later that NCR Corporation and AT& T Corporation invented WaveLAN, considered the true precursor to WiFi. Then, in 1997, the first version of the IEEE 802.11 wireless protocol was released.

âBut waitâ, you say, âwhatâs the IEEE 802.11 wireless protocol?â

How You Can Use Wireless Charging Today

All the technology aside, getting started with wireless charging is pretty simple. If you want to charge your smartphone wirelessly, youll need a smartphone that supports wireless charging and a compatible wireless charging mat to place your phone on. You can also purchase adapters to add wireless charging support to phones that dont include it.

Popular smartphones that support wireless charging include:

  • Apple iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X
  • Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy Note 5
  • Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, S8 Active, S7, S7 Edge, S7 Active
  • LG G6 and LG V30
  • Motorola Moto Z, Moto Z Play, Moto Z2 Force, Moto Z2 Play

Android manufacturers have increasingly been abandoning wireless charging in recent years. Only Samsung has kept it on its recent high-end phones. For example, Google does not offer wireless charging in its Pixel smartphone, although earlier Nexus phones included this feature. With Apple giving the Qi standard a vote of confidence, wireless charging could become more common on Android devices once again.

How Modems Differ From Routers

A router and your devices arent the only components on your home network. Theres also the modem. In fact, without the modem, all youd have is your local network with no access to the internet.

The modems job is to bring the internet service from your provider into your home. It then connects to your router, delivering that internet connectivity to your home network.

When most internet service was delivered over telephone lines, modems enabled communication between the digital devices in your home and the analog signals used on telephone lines. With todays internet connections, including cable and satellite, modems play a similar but different role.

How Wireless Broadband Works

Usually, you’ll find wireless internet where other means are impossible. There is no cable internet, and the mobile internet is either non-existent or very slow.

When a company decides to wire up a community to wireless internet, it sets up towers in elevated areas around the town. These will transmit and receive data from the customers and businesses that use it.

Then, the tower has to be hooked up to the internet. If the town isn’t too rural, it may be possible to wire up the tower to a fiber-optic cable. This would be a lot cheaper and more convenient than wiring up the entire town.

Alternatively, if the tower can’t be wired up, it can transmit its data to another tower nearby. These towers can then continuously pass along the internet signals until it reaches the WISP.

Customers then have equipment set up on their homes to send and receive internet signals. Sometimes, they can achieve this using a long-range router. If the tower is too far away, they can mount a receiver to the outside of their house. This receiver isn’t unlike the television dishes you see on houses.

This kind of internet connection is known as “fixed wireless internet” because it’s transmitting data from two fixed locations. Houses and office buildings aren’t moving anywhere, so the internet antenna mounted on them are set in place.

This internet connection is also referred to as “radio frequency internet” or just “RF internet,” as it depends on radio waves to send and receive signals.

How Wireless Communication Takes Place

For wireless communication to take place we require data to be transported without wires. This data is transported using what we call signals. Now the question comes how can we create signal to be sent over wireless? It all starts at the transmitter, where an oscillator generates periodic wave. This signal propagates through internal wires of the device up to the antenna. Since antenna is a conductor, electric current goes further towards the end of the antenna. The antenna then radiates the alternating current as an electromagnetic wave. This is where wireless starts i.e. antenna converts electric current into waves.
