Spacex Reveals Monthly Cost Of Starlink Internet In Its Better Than Nothing Beta
SpaceX has launched nearly 900 Starlink satellites since May 2019.
The pricing for SpaceXs Starlink beta service in the U.S. appears to have been revealed, after potential users received emails inviting them to sign up to the service.
According to an email posted on Reddit, and confirmed by CNBC, Elon Musk’s company will charge users $99 a month initially to use its Starlink service. They will also need to pay $499 for a small satellite dish, mounting tripod, and router from the company.
While the pricing has been revealed, its unclear how many users this initial service called the Better Than Nothing Beta by SpaceX is being rolled out to. However, SpaceX did reveal some further details on what could be expected from Starlink.
As you can tell from the title, we are trying to lower your initial expectations, the reported email begins.
Expect to see data speeds vary from 50Mbps to 150Mbps and latency from 20ms to 40ms over the next several months as we enhance the Starlink system. There will also be brief periods of no connectivity at all.
As we launch more satellites, install more ground stations, and improve our networking software, data speed, latency, and uptime will improve dramatically. For latency, we expect to achieve 16ms to 19ms by summer 2021.
The Starlink phased-array user terminal, which is more advanced than what’s in fighter jets, plus mounting tripod and Wi-Fi router, costs $499 and the monthly subscription costs $99.

While that sounds like a lot, its a tiny fraction of what existing launches cost: on average, NASA spends an average of $152 million per launch meaning that, if Musk is to be believed, SpaceX will be able to launch cargo and people into orbit for 1.3 percent of what NASA is currently paying for the same task.
SpaceX is planning to send the gigantic Starship rocket to space and far beyond with up to 100 passengers on board. The company is also working on a system that could ferry up to 1,000 passengers from one city to another on board the same rocket within the next ten years.
Its an extremely ambitious target. Despite costs plummeting thanks to improving reusability, a launch of SpaceXs much smaller workhorse rocket Falcon 9 currently costs $62 million more than thirty times Musks quoted price of a Starship launch.
Does that mean Musk pulled the $2 million figure out of thin air? Maybe. At the Air Force event, Musk admitted he does zero market research whatsoever, according to Space.com.

Engineers in the UK and Japan have developed new ways to modulate light before its beamed down optical fibers, allowing for much wider bandwidths than usual.
