Wireless Routers 101 – Which AC wireless router should you buy ?

Once upon a time, computers needed to be wired up to one another in order to communicate. In 1999 Wi-Fi launched as a way for computers to wirelessly connect to one another and the internet.

Through your internet service provider , a cable or DSL line finds its way into your home and connects to a modem a small device that decodes the incoming internet signal into something your computer can read.

That signal then goes to a router which connects to your modem through a wire that ensures any email you clicked on displays on the right device in your home, whether its your smartphone, laptop or otherwise. You can even find modem/router combo units that unite both of these functions into one device.

Compared to a WiFi-only router, which only supports wireless standards, a 4G WiFi router supports mobile technology via a 4G wireless module.

Once you plug in a micro SIM card with a data plan, the router can communicate with the carriers surrounding cell towers to access the internet and generate a reliable WiFi signal. You can easily share this internet access with family and friends.

How Does A Wifi Booster Work

WiFi boosters wirelessly connect to an access point, such as a wireless router or hotspot. The WiFi booster grabs the signal being transmitted by the access point and amplifies it for better use. Usually, boosters are coupled with stronger antennas that help broadcast the signal further and cover larger areas.

The location of the WiFi booster is extremely important. You want to place it close enough to the access point to receive a signal, but far enough away to cover the problem areas. Ideally, you should look for the area that doesn’t have a strong WiFi connection and plug the booster into a wall outlet halfway between the target area and the router.

Most WiFi boosters have pretty simple setup processes. Many utilize the WPS button, which makes the installation process super-fast. Tips To Save Power Consumption Of A Wifi Router

There are two ways to save on the power consumption of a wireless router:

  • Reduce the transmission power on the Router. Keep in mind when the transmission power is too low, the quality of the Internet connection and the maximum range of the connection also decrease. Simply test this by regulating the performance of the Wi-Fi.
  • Switch off the WLAN connection when its not needed. You can also set up a schedule for this and, for example, switch off the WiFi completely at night or unplug it. Some router models have a standby mode that helps you to minimize consumption.
  • Switch off Unnecessary functions. This includes the network sharing of other electronic devices in the WLAN network. You should also switch off the Wi-Fi of external devices such as printers or e-book readers if you do not need them, otherwise, the router will continuously send signals.
  • Energy-Efficient Router: While there is no need for this, you can always get an energy-efficient WiFi router.

    Its still a pretty new technology and nobody has been exposed to RF radiation from routers and the many other devices around us for a lifetime.

    Our kids will be the first generation to find out. And if you ask me, I dont think we should use them as test objects for this experiment.

    How To Choose The Best Wi

    When it comes to choosing the best wireless router, it’s easy to get lost in the complexity of networking jargon and obscure technology standards. But all you really need to know is how to answer two key questions: What speed do you need for your internet connection? And what sort of coverage do you need in your home?

    Speeds and standards: The internet speed you need for your router will generally be determined by the speed you get from your internet service provider and what speed is supported by your modem. For most people, a standard 802.11AC router will handle all but the most impressive plans available, like Gigabit internet plans that are only available in select cities.     Which Wireless Protocols Should I Look For

    Wireless Ethernet networks use 802.11 protocols to send and receive data. The most widely used Wi-Fi protocol, 802.11ac, allows for maximum data rates of up to 5,400Mbps and operates on both the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz bands. It utilizes Multiple Input Multiple Output technology, which uses several antennas to send and receive up to eight spatial streams, resulting in enhanced performance. It also supports beamforming, a technology that sends Wi-Fi signals directly to a client rather than broadcasting in all directions, and automatic band-steering, which lets the router select the most efficient radio band based on network traffic, band availability, and range.

    The 802.11ac protocol also offers downstream Multi-User MIMO technology, which is designed to provide bandwidth to multiple devices simultaneously rather than sequentially. That means up to four clients can have their own data streams instead of waiting in turn to receive data from the router. In order for MU-MIMO to work, the router and the client devices must contain MU-MIMO Wi-Fi circuitry. Routers that support MU-MIMO are widely available, but the fact that consumers have been slow to understand exactly what the benefits of MU-MIMO are has kept the number of client devices somewhat scarce.

    In other words, theres a lot of complicated technobabble behind the numbers on the box, but theres not much reason to overburden yourself with it: Its mostly a benchmark that allows you to determine a routers overall capabilities. Think of it like the available horsepower a car has its less about utilizing that power each time you drive and more to categorize the general strength of the cars engine.

    The latest Wi-Fi 6 routers offer better speeds and more features than older AC routers, but a new iteration called Wi-FI 6E is already on the way. If you need a new router now, you can either get an affordable AC router as a stopgap before upgrading to Wi-Fi 6E down the line or grab an early Wi-Fi 6 router now. If you can, I’d recommend waiting until 2021 when Wi-Fi 6E will be fully baked.

    What Is A Safe Distance

    Is it safe to sleep near a wireless router? There is no clearly-defined safe distance as this new issue has yet been studied enough. While EMF emissions from different routers vary, for most home WiFi routers, a distance of 40 feet will help your body and shouldnt impact your WiFi connection too much. And beware that radiation from WiFi routers can pass through the walls in your home so keep this in mind as you evaluate the safety of your bed’s location. Those who are sensitive to EMFs should take extra efforts to reduce EMFs and chronic proximity to the sources.

    How To Turn Off Radiation On A Router

    The only way to turn off the RF radiation on the router is to shut off the wireless signal.

    You cannot separate the two.

    Before you can do that you need to change from wireless connections to ethernet cables. You simply take a network cable and insert it in one of the ports that say Lan on the router. The other end of the cable should be inserted in your laptop or desktop computer.

    If you dont have a port on your computer to insert the ethernet cable you can get a little adaptor that lets you insert it in your USB port.

    This is what the ethernet cable looks like. Im sure you recognize it.

    After inserting an ethernet cable between the router and your computer you can now eliminate the radiation completely.

    Now that you have connected your computers with the ethernet cables its time to shut off the wireless signal on the router. You can either do this yourself by accessing the router from your browser or you can contact your internet service provider and have them do it remotely.

    But dont trust that it is actually shut off.

    Not because the internet provider is trying to trick you but simply because we have seen many times that it takes 2-3 calls before they actually shut it off. Even though they will tell you that they did.

    The only way to know for sure is to measure the RF radiation around the router. You can do that with an EMF meter. You can read more about this instrument below.

    Your Router Should Have A Multi

    The hardware inside your router matters a lot, especially the processor and the quantity of RAM. People use Wi-Fi for video streaming, file downloads, data backups, online gaming, and other activities during which lots of data is transferred to and from the internet. Because of that, wireless routers need a lot more processing power than they used to.

    When you pick your next router, you must know whether it has a single-core, dual-core, or quad-core processor and its operating frequency. If you want a fast network that can cope with several network clients at the same time, we recommend that you stop buying routers with single-core processors. Your next router should have at least a dual-core processor that can deal with more data and more clients than a single-core processor. A processor running at 900 MHz is less potent than one at 1.2 GHz, while the bigger the number of cores, the better the router performs. The same rules apply as is the case with computers, smartphones, and other computing devices.

    Also, your router should not have less than 128MB of RAM. The ideal would be 256 MB of RAM or more. This is to make sure that it can process everything as fast as possible. If money is not an issue, you should seek a wireless router with 512 MB of RAM or 1 GB.

    How To Measure Radiation From A Router

    The radiation from a router is measured in either V/m or W/m2 .

    We always stick to V/m because we believe it is easier to understand. At least it feels more intuitive to us.

    When we measure V/m we also get the advantage of seeing spikes in radiation. Many devices will not emit a constant level of RF radiation. Instead, they send outbursts or spikes of radiation once in a while. This is especially true for smart meters.

    We use the EMF meter you can see in the photo above.

    Thats an EMF meter and it can measure three different types of EMFs:

  • RF radiation
  • Magnetic fields
  • Electric fields

    There are many different models and types of EMF meters on the market and I chose to see which of the EMF meters the building biologists and professionals use .

    When you want to check that the RF signal is turned off you will need to set your EMF meter to measure RF radiation. Thats really easy with the meter I show above because it will do so as the default setting when you turn it on. You just turn the wheel on the side of the meter and it is on. Now you can instantly see the RF radiation level on the screen.

    We want NO radiation at all from the router when the wireless signal is turned off.

    So, you will typically get SOME RF radiation around your router.

    What Is A Router For

    A router is the first line of security from intrusion into a network. Enabling the highest level of security on the router turns on things like the firewall, and is the best way to keep your computer system and information safe from attack.

    Routers contain software called firmware that should be updated as released by the router manufacturer.
