The Google Nest Wifi Has Been Out For A Month But You Can Already Save $60 In This Black Friday Deal
28 November 2019
Save on an all-in-one Google home internet setup
If you’re after both a router and smart speakers this Black Friday, this Best Buy deal for the Google Nest Wifi offers the best of both worlds. This three-pack includes the Google Wifi mesh router and two extenders, which double as Google Assistant-enabled smart speakers with built-in microphones.
This pack brings Google Home and Google Wifi together in one great package, and it only launched earlier this month as a successor to the Google Wifi product from 2017.
“We love the Google Nest Wifi for bringing together Google Wifi and Google Home into a single product offering at long last in an even more attractive design,” is how we summed up this package in our review. “While it’s not worth replacing your Google Wifi or other mesh system with this, we’d heartily recommend this solution over most others short of Googles original mesh system.”

Can I Use My Old Google Wifi Routers With Nest Wifi
Yes, but it doesnt come without a few headaches.
If youre replacing Google Wifi nodes with Nest Wifi or Nest Wifi Points, its as simple as adding them to your existing network. However, if you want to replace your primary Google Wifi router connected to the modem with a Nest Wifi, youll need to factory reset your entire network and start all over again.
The process of setting everything back up took me around 30 minutes, so its not a painful ordeal by any means. Plus, the results are more than worth the effort.
You can technically add up to 200 Nest Wifi, Google Wifi, and Nest Wifi Points to a single network, though anything over three will be overkill for a reasonably-sized family home.
Unfortunately, theres no Google OnHub support, so if you have one of the old TP-Link or Asus mesh routers, you wont be able to include them on the same network.
Nest Wifi Review: Design
Composed of devices that look like big plastic marshmallows, the Nest WiFi mesh devices are small and easy to hide. In addition to stashing them on a shelf, they fit on a windowsill or on a coffee table. The router has a 4.3-inch diameter and is 3.6 inches tall. By contrast, the Point extensions are a little smaller with a 4.0-inch diameter and 3.4-inch height. Both have shotgun-cooling holes at their bases and are tiny compared to comparable Netgear Orbi devices, which are larger and measure nearly 10 inches tall.
The Nest WiFi devices should fit into a variety of home decors, thanks to Google Home’s evolving design language of organic shapes with no hard edges and soft colors. The router is available only in flat white, but the extensions come in Mist , Sand or white.
The Nest WiFi concept is similar to Netgear’s Orbi Voice: the router is the center of home networking while the Nest WiFi Point Extensions do double duty: They push the Wi-Fi signal farther into the house and can respond to voice commands and play audio. In essence, the extensions are a combination of a mesh extender and a smart speaker.

Design Changes And Nest Wifi Point Features
One of the biggest changes between the Google Nest Wifi and the Google Wifi is the design.
The new routers are taller, wider, and heavier than their predecessors. Theyve also gone through an aesthetic overhaul, with the Nest Wifi adopting a rounded dome-like shape and a smoother finish with options for snow, sand, and mist colorways. Its certainly more appealing than the plastic, puck-like design from before.
The Nest Wifi is larger, but has a more subtle, dome-like look compared to the old Google Wifi pucks.
Flip the routers over, and its a similar story on both devices two ethernet ports and a power port. Strangely, Google has opted for a barrel jack power connector for the Nest Wifi. The original Google Wifi uses USB-C.
A particularly welcome change is the subtle LED indicator light, which is now a small dot instead of the large pulsing ring wrapped around the Google Wifi pucks. The Nest Wifi Points sit somewhere in the middle with a round LED around the bottom edge.
Of course, the biggest change to the ecosystem that comes with Nest Wifi Points addition is support.
Each Point essentially doubles up as a Google Nest Mini with all the voice commands, music playback, and smart home controls you get with any . Theres also a mute button on the back in case you want some privacy.
How Many Nodes Do You Need
If you have a smaller home , Google recommends that you start with a single Google Nest Wifi. But we say that if you’re only going to use one, you’re better off upgrading your router instead.
A mesh network comes into its own if you need much wider coverage. If you have multiple floors, it’s worth investing in at least two of them: one for the ground floor, and one for the first floor. Google offers a three-pack set that covers up to 4,500 square feet.

Google Wifi Vs Nest Wifi: Features
The original Google Wifi offered plenty of advanced features for its time, with simple mesh networking and 802.11ac connectivity that was top of the line when the system was introduced.
Each Google Wifi point is equipped with a pair of Ethernet ports, letting you connect your cable modem to the central unit, or attach other devices to the extended mesh network through the various points around the house.
But the real standout feature back in 2016 was the ease of setup. Using the Google Wifi App , you could set up each Google Wifi device simply by scanning a QR code on the base of the unit, with setup taking roughly five minutes per unit as multiple points were used for the mesh network.
When it initially launched, the Google Wifi mesh kit was notable for its early smart home capabilities, which included IFTTT functionality.
When Google introduced Nest Wifi in 2020, it updated this feature set with a number of new functions.
Smart home features were a major focus, as the Nest name might suggest. In addition to app-based network management, Nest Wifi works with the entire Nest family of products, and major names like Philips Hue, Tile trackers, GE, TP-Link, and Kasa. From smart locks to smart lights and plugs, your whole house full of connected devices should be compatible with the Nest Wifi system.
The only area where we failed to see the expected advancement was in Wi-Fi standards, with the Nest Wifi still using 802.11 AC instead of the newer Wi-Fi 6.
Google Nest Cam Outdoor User Experience
The Nest Cam Outdoor is pretty easy to operate through the Google Nest app. The app lets you adjust alerts and settings, so you dont have to sift through 50 million alerts about waving tree branches or passing cars every day.
The Nest app gets good reviews through Google Play and the Apple App Store. Google Play users give it a little over four stars,1 and App Store users give it nearly a full five stars.2 Weve also found the app to be full-featured and intuitive. You wont have to spend a couple hours just trying to figure out where everything isits pretty simple.

Are There Better Alternatives
If youre looking for something cheaper with the same expansive reach, then youll want to consider the alternatives like the Netgear Orbi that costs $200 for the same configuration. While Netgears mesh system offers more range, it doesnt have the smart assistant feature you get with the Nest Wifi point.
Another option is , which at $200 for a 2-pack system, is a bargain compared to Googles offering. Similarly, it offers the same straightforward setup as Googles Nest Wifi.
If you want more advanced setup options, consider the Linksys Velop MX5300 or Netgear XRM570 Nighthawk Pro Gaming WiFi Router. Theyre substantially more expensive at $400 each for the routers themselves, but you get advanced networking controls and several Ethernet ports to hardwire devices.
Nokia And Project Stockholm
Six large telecommunications companies led by Nokia filed a complaint against Qualcomm with the ‘s antitrust division in October 2005. They alleged Qualcomm was abusing its market position to charge unreasonable rates for its patents. Qualcomm alleged the six companies were colluding together under the code name Project Stockholm in a legal strategy to negotiate lower rates. These events led to a protracted legal dispute.
Qualcomm filed a series of patent-infringement lawsuits against Nokia in Europe, Asia, the US, and with the ITC. The parties initiated more than one dozen lawsuits against one another. Several companies filed antitrust complaints against Qualcomm with the Korean , who initiated an investigation into Qualcomm’s practices in December 2006. The dispute between Qualcomm and Nokia escalated, when their licensing agreement ended in April 2007.
In February 2008, the two parties agreed to halt any new litigation until an initial ruling is made on the first lawsuit in Delaware. Nokia won three consecutive court rulings with the German Federal Patent Court, the High Court in the United Kingdom, and the International Trade Commission respectively. Each found that Nokia was not infringing on Qualcomm’s patents. In July 2008, Nokia and Qualcomm reached an out-of-court settlement that ended the dispute and created a 15-year cross-licensing agreement.

Google Nest Wifi Smart Speakers
Each of the Nest Points and the Nest Wifi Router also functions as a smart speaker with the voice-activated intelligence of Google Assistant. These devices are equipped with Google Assistant smart speakers, microphones, and touch controls.
As such, wherever you may be around your house, you can communicate with your nearest Nest Wifi Point. You can basically use them just as you would use any other smart speaker, like Google Nest Mini.
You can access the Nest Wifi Point by saying OK Google and then communicate your commands. You can also communicate Wifi-specific commands, like running a speed test or ceasing Wifi coverage for specific devices.
Since the Nest Wifi isnt out yet, we have no way to vouch for the quality of the speakers. However, early reports suggest the sound is adequate and slightly better than most traditional mini speakers. The devices have some extra space inside to accommodate the antennas and heat dispersion this means theres additional space to move sound around as well.
Maximum Number Of Points
We recommend a maximum of five Wifi points in a single network. Adding more may be detrimental to Wi-Fi performance.
The Google Home app supports only one Wi-Fi network per home, but you can create up to 5 homes, with a single Wi-Fi network in each.
Nest Wifi and Google Wifi are designed for personal home use and not intended to be used for sharing networks across multiple dwellings. Using Nest Wifi or Google Wifi in this manner can result in slower Wi-Fi speeds and unreliable connections.

Google Nest Wifi Advantages
So how does Google Nest Wifi benefit you?
Well, traditional Wifi routers have the following issues:
- They look ugly and dont serve any function besides transmitting the Wifi signal. As such, you want to hide them away somewhere no one can see them. You want to hide them in a corner or in your closet or some other discreet location. But that also limits their abilities to transmit the signal effectively. Wifi routers should ideally be placed in a central location at around waist height.
- Traditional Wifi routers cant cover large spaces. All devices have to be in close proximity to the Wifi router to receive a signal.
Google Nest Wifi effectively addresses and resolves both of these issues.
First, Google Nest Wifi is an attractive and minimally designed wireless router. It also serves an actual purpose its a smart speaker with Google voice controls. This means you dont have to hide it away but can keep it on display prominently.
Ben Brown, Google product lead for the Nest Wifi, said: We realized that performance for the Wifi Point would double if it was off the floor, not hidden in a closet. Having a great design, having something you actually want to interact with, and having the Assistant on the device makes it actually so it’s a much better Wifi system.
Second, Google Nest Wifi as already mentioned is a mesh router system. As such, it connects to the other Points around your property and disperses the wireless signal for effective coverage around your house.
