Do I Need Fast Internet To Make Phone Calls
You will need slightly faster internet to handle phone calls, provided they are being made using Voice over Internet Protocol .
Basically, VoIP means that your voice is being transmitted and received over the internet, using a service like Skype, Viber, or Discord.
However, if you are making calls using your landline, your speed isnt a big deal. What matters is that you have a stable broadband connection.
Everything You Need To Know About Data Caps
Something else to look out for during your search for your home’s ideal internet speed is data caps. Internet data caps are ISP-enforced data usage limits — it’s important to take them into consideration as you shop, especially if you use your internet for high-usage activities like streaming Netflix or scrolling through social media. Video-heavy use cases like that eat through lots of data, and if you hit the data cap, you’ll need to pay extra for an additional allowance.
Low-speed internet plans — a 10Mbps DSL connection, for example — are typically intended for light internet usage, so the data caps that sometimes come with them can be painfully tight. Meanwhile, some providers offer plans with no data caps at all.
If you’re unsure whether it’s worth paying for a higher data cap or switching to a provider that doesn’t use them, check with your ISP to see if they offer any tools to help you track your household’s data usage . That’ll give you a better sense of how much you need and whether you need to make a change.

Is 100 Mbps Enough For Netflix
We recommend grabbing at least 50 Mbps download speeds if its just you and maybe one other person using the internet. As for families, we think 100 Mbps or more download speed is better.Your internet services download speed is measured in megabits per second. Anything above 25 Mbps is considered high-speed internet.
How Do You Change Frequency Settings
Whether you choose 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, you need to make sure your wireless is enabled on your modem/router and set to use the same frequency. Check your specific model of router for compatibility and frequency capabilities.
With a dual-band router, you can set it to transmit at both frequencies concurrently. In this case, you typically have two networks that appear in your network list, with identical names except for a “5G” or “2.4G” at the end. You can then choose to connect each individual device to either network.
On most newer modems, there is also a way to find the best WiFi channel for your environment and then change the channel as needed in the modem’s wireless settings. This way you can make the most of the different capabilities of 2.4 GHz vs. 5GHz WiFi.

Common Home Wifi Problems And How To Fix Them
It’s Sunday evening and you’re home, withno desire to go out. There’s a new season of your favorite show available onNetflix. You’ve been looking forward to this binge session all week.
Once the popcorn’s popped and you’ve madeyourself comfortable on the couch, you sit down and open up the Netflix app onyour TV. The loading wheel pops up onto the screen, as it usually does for afew seconds before the video loads, but this time, it never goes away.
Your worst fear has been realized. Thatsuper-fast WiFi connection has failed you when you needed it most. Your nightis ruined.
But that’s not necessarily true. While mostof us don’t have any real idea how the internet actually works, it’s prettyeasy to do basic troubleshooting with your WiFi connection that can help itdeliver the service you need more consistently.
In general, there are three main types ofproblems that can occur: a slowconnection, no connection, and a security breach.
All of these problems can be equallyfrustrating, although security threats should be the biggest concern since theycan lead to data and even identity theft. The good news is they can usually befixed if you take a pragmatic, methodical approach, which we’ve outlined foryou to help you solve any WiFi problems without tears and angry tirades.
How Fast Is Fast Enough
The Federal Communications Commission defines anything faster than 25 megabits per second as “advanced service.” For most, however, this is probably closer to the bare minimum. In March, a bipartisan group of senators to raise the bar for broadband by setting minimum speeds at 100Mbps.
At any rate, if you make use of the internet on an everyday basis, you’ll want to aim for something a little higher than 25Mbps if you can. With smart home gadgets growing in prevalence and our media consumption increasingly driven by streaming, it makes sense to opt for something closer to 100Mbps if plans like those are available in your area .
It’s also important to note that having a fast internet package doesn’t guarantee fast internet.
Network congestion, poor router placement, interference from nearby networks and other factors can all slow things down. To find out whether your internet speed is truly to blame, check out our guide on how to test your connection.

How Much Speed Do You Need
Back in 2015, the FCC updated its definition of broadband to be connections rated of at least 25 Mbps for downloads and 3 Mbps for uploads. While these speeds are a noticeable increase from the FCCs previous definition of 4 Mbps for downloads and 1 Mbps for uploads, they wont necessarily be enough for modern-day needs. From streaming 4K media to playing online games, many people prefer or even need a faster connection, but what speed is right for you? Find out what your Internet speed is by checking out Optimum’s Internet speed test page.
What Internet Speed Do You Need
|Internet speed||What can you do online|
Checking email and social mediaSearching on GoogleStreaming music
Streaming SD or HD video on a few devicesPlaying online games with one playerMaking video calls on Zoom
Streaming 4K video on two or three devicesPlaying online games with multiple playersDownloading large files
Operating multiple smart-home devicesStreaming 4K video on more than three devicesDownloading large files quickly
Streaming, gaming, calling, and surfing the internet simultaneously from 5+ devices.
You need around 30 Mbps internet speed to use the internet without frustrating loading times or buffering. Some internet users dont need as much, while others require faster speeds to accommodate more activity and more devices on their home network. But 30 Mbps is relatively fast for a small household and modest internet needs.
All in all, when youre using your Wi-Fi, you need internet speed thats fast enough to let you do everything you normally do online with a smooth connection and minimal slowdowns. That could include simple things like checking email and reading news headlines, but it could also include more complex endeavors like streaming on Netflix in 4K or uploading a terabyte hard drives worth of files to Google Drive.

What Is The Difference Between A Wired Vs Wireless Connection
Wired speeds are delivered when you plug an Ethernet cable from your modem or router directly into your device typically a computer, laptop, television, gaming console or other Internet enabled device. When a device is connected with an Ethernet cable it can achieve its fastest speeds. Why? Because your Internet is physically attached to your device, theres nothing coming between it and your Internet signal. A wired connection is always better and should be used wherever it makes sense to do so. Try to match each device with its best connection. PCs, laptops, media players and gaming consoles work best with a wired connection mobile devices and tablets work best on WiFi.

You Dont Need Gigabit Internet
Indeed, generally, we dont need Gigabit Internet. Most online applications require much less bandwidth than 1Gbps to work correctly. And they wont take more than what they need.
Take streaming, one of the most bandwidth taxing tasks, for example. You probably only use 30 Mbps at most per a 4K stream even an 8K streaming needs no more than 100Mbps thats one-tenth of Gigabit. So faster Internet doesnt yield any difference.
And thats why even modern streaming devices, such as the or the Xfinity Flex, come with a slow 100Mbps Ethernet adapter as an add-on or built-in, respectively. They have no use for anything faster than 100Mbps.
There are very few applications in which the faster is better. In my experience, file downloading is about the only one.
But even then, how often do you need to get a ton of data at once? Thats not to mention most ISPs put a monthly data cap on your plan that of Comcast is 1.25TB.
But lets say you need to download a few gigabytes, thats a full-featured 4K movie, at a time, thatd take around 30 seconds over a Gigabit connection. Even at half the speed, Im sure you can find a few things to do while waiting, like taking a few deep breaths.
Internet Providers With The Best Zoom Speeds
There are a lot of internet providers that can get you Zooms minimum speeds, but we wanted to highlight some of our favorites. Xfinity is probably your best bet because it has a wide network, incredibly fast speeds, and great customer ratings. But fiber providers like Google Fiber and AT& T give you the added advantage of having very fast upload speeds, ensuring your video feed stays strong.
You can find more great providers on our fastest internet providers guide. Also, make sure to run a search to see which of these providers are available in your area.

How To Find Wifi In China As A Traveler
Let me start with a bit of good news: WiFi is pretty much everywhere in China.
And when I say everywhere, I mean
As with most developed countries around the world now, its common to find plenty of free WiFi in China throughout airports, restaurants, coffee shops, and malls. A wireless internet connection is also something you can expect in a Chinese hotel or even in a youth hostel.
The truth is, youre not going to have a difficult time finding WiFi in China no matter where youre at. Finding it is easy
connecting to WiFi is slightly harder.
The problem isnt finding free WiFi in China. The problem is that its not exactly easy for most travelers to connect to the WiFi.
There are a few different reasons why its hard for travelers to use WiFi in China. These include:
- WiFi is not as fast as it is back at home: This is changing quickly and depends heavily on where you are in China, but in general, WiFi connections are extremely slow in China, particularly on public networks.
- Chinas Internet is heavily censored: Its also important to note that the China censors its internet. In order to access Facebook, Instagram, your email and many other websites, you need to use a VPN before you depart. Its very hard to do once you arrive here.
- Many public WiFi networks in China require text verification: This is the process whereby you must submit a Chinese phone number to get a security code via text to use the WiFi network. More on that in a moment.
What Internet Speed Can I Get
Unless you live in a rural area, most internet service providers should be able to deliver their full range of broadband packages.
This means that you can get internet speeds of up to 300Mbps or even more. If you live in an area that is serviced by Hyperoptic, you may be able to get even faster speeds.
On the other hand, if you live in a rural area, you will need to put in your postcode on the providers site and find out from them what speeds are available.
In general, even in the most remote areas, you should be able to get at least 20-30Mbps with traditional fibre.
However, if thats not enough, you can always use a wireless dongle or MiFi. By getting on a 4G or 5G network and having your broadband delivered wirelessly, you should be able to unlock at least an additional 10-20Mbps, in terms of your download speed.

Does Your Download Allowance Matter
Your download allowance is separate from your broadband speed. Your plans download limit is the maximum amount of data youre permitted to download per month, including pictures, movies and music.
The size of the files will determine how much of your allowance you use when downloading or streaming. For example, a song might be about 3Mb, while an HD movie could be several gigabytes.
If you have a plan with a download limit, youll need to be careful when youre downloading or streaming content because any data you use above your allowance could incur a charge.
