So What Is A Mesh Router System

3 Ways to Get WiFi on a Desktop PC

A mesh router is different than a traditional router system because it is able to broadcast a Wi-Fi signal from multiple points, rather than just one. Theres a router that connects to the modem, same as with a traditional router system, but then there are separate points that are positioned around the home that are able to rebroadcast the signal so that it covers more area. And the entire Wi-Fi signal is under one network name, so its really simple.

Traditional router systems, which your internet service provider most likely provides, still work well enough for plenty of people, and if youre not experiencing internet problems, then theres no reason to switch to mesh router system. However, if you are having internet issues, a mesh router system might be a great solution.

Get A Stronger Antenna

Most WiFi routers come with small, weak antennas. Its not that manufacturers want to save every cent they can, but powerful WiFi antennas tend to be hideously large. Compared to the antenna that came with your router, which probably is just a few inches tall and has around 4 dB gain, a 10-dB antenna can be anywhere between 10 to 15 inches tall.

But if you dont mind the size, a new, powerful WiFi antenna is a great way how you can boost WiFi at home or office without buying a new router.

There are several different types of WiFi antennas, but the only type you need to care about is the common rubber duck antenna, which is an electrically short monopole antenna that consists of a springy wire in the shape of a narrow helix, sealed in a rubber or plastic jacket to protect the antenna.

Such antennas use the same RP-SMA connector, and there are many different models available on Amazon and other online stores. Some even come with a handy extension cable that allows you to place the antenna farther away from your router to achieve optimal signal distribution.

To boost WiFi signal, you need to purchase an antenna with more gain than your current one. The gain of an antenna system relative to an isotropic radiator at radio frequencies is expressed in dBi, or decibels relative to isotropic. Most home routers come with small antennas, whose gain tends to be between 45 dBi. Replacing such antenna with a 9 dBi antenna should provide excellent signal boost.

Adding Mesh Routers To Your Existing Network

While most mesh Wi-Fi systems are sold in a package of 2-3 devices, with the option of adding additional nodes for wider coverage, a lot of modern routers and extensions are made to offer mesh capability. If you like your existing router, but want to get that same coverage across a larger area, you can often do that by adding a second router or extension, creating a mesh system without replacing the hardware you already have.

Many routers, like the Linksys Max Stream MR9600, can be doubled up with other routers from the same brand, and used to create a mesh network. It’s a handy function that gives you the choice of of a single unit for smaller homes and apartments or a more expansive mesh system for larger homes.

Wi-Fi extenders traditionally aren’t capable of creating mesh networks, but that’s also changing, with products like the Netgear AX1800 Mesh Extender . When paired with other devices, it offers the same coverage and network, with no need to manually switch networks or bands when you move from one end of the house to another. And the best part? It’s not limited to Netgear products, but works with any wireless router, including the modem/router gateway devices provided by many internet service providers.

Use The Latest Wifi Technologies

The newest wireless technology, IEEE 802.11ac, offers superior download and upload speeds as well as improved range compared to older WiFi technologies, such as IEEE 802.11b, g, and others. To take advantage of the latest WiFi technologies to boost home WiFi, you need to make sure that both your home router and your WiFi-enabled devices, such as smartphones and laptops, support them.

When selecting a new WiFi router with support for IEEE 802.11ac, dont pick the most affordable model you can find. Unless your budget is very strict, its always worth spending extra to purchase a router with excellent range and modern features such as MU-MIMO, Quality of Service, guest networks, gigabit Ethernet ports, and replaceable external antennas.

A good router should be able to serve you well for at least five years, which is approximately how long it usually takes for a major new WiFi technology to become mainstream. Near the end of this article, we recommend five best WiFi routers from leading manufacturers, so all you need to do is pick one that fits your budget.

Install An Internal Wi

You can also add a Wi-Fi card to your desktop PC. This involves opening up your PC, and then installing a dedicated internal Wi-Fi card in a PCI Express slot, PCI Express Mini slot, or something similar. Assuming your PC is designed to be opened easily and has a spare slot for an expansion card, this should work well.

The advantage of using a dedicated internal Wi-Fi card is that it will potentially have better reception than a little USB donglemostly because the internal version can include a larger antenna that sticks out of the back of your PC.

Expect to pay somewhere . Before you purchase one, be sure your computer has a free slot of the appropriate type and that youre comfortable installing it on your own. Assuming you can get your computer open easily, it should just be a matter of shutting it down, opening the case, plugging the card into the slot (and securing it with a screw, closing the case, and booting up.

When youre done, your computer will be able to connect to Wi-Fi just like your average laptop. You may have to install the drivers that came with your Wi-Fi hardware first, though.

What Is A Mesh Wi

What is a mesh Wi-Fi router? Mesh systems are made to cover your home in Wi-Fi, extending wireless coverage by sharing that network across multiple devices. If you’re finding that the router that worked in your apartment doesn’t give you wireless connectivity you want for your whole home, then a mesh Wi-Fi router is the solution for you.

If you have a large home at least 3,000 square feet or one with an unusual layout, more than two stories or interior brick walls, you probably regularly encounter Wi-Fi dead zones, and your setup could be a good candidate for a mesh-router system. Here’s everything you need to know about what a mesh Wi-Fi router does, and whether it’s right for your home.

Unlike standalone routers, which use a single device to provide Wi-Fi coverage to a limited area, mesh routers use two or more connected devices to offer multiple sources of Wi-Fi signal, all on the same seamless network. It’s like having 3-5 separate routers in your home, but they all share a single Wi-Fi network. And modern mesh systems have super simple setup, letting you wipe out dead spots and fill in the gaps in your home coverage, and enjoy Wi-Fi in every room, and even in the backyard or garage.

Try A Direct Connection To A Computer

If you still cannot connect to the Internet with your computer, try disconnecting the Ethernet cable from your router and plug it directly into the socket on your computer. To disconnect the Ethernet cable from your router, squeeze the retainer clip on the bottom of the connector until the cable slips out of its socket in the router. See the text box on the photo in the next step to view the retaining clip. The Ethernet cable socket on your laptop computer may be on either side or the back of the computer. It will be on the back of a desktop computer. This does not solve your lack of WiFi reception, but it does show your modem is receiving a signal and it allows you to get onto the Internet on an emergency basis.

    Keep Your Router Updated

How to Get WiFi for Free on an Old Computer Without an Adapter

If you follow the news, youve heard about the growing number of large-scale malware attacks that are costing businesses and individuals alike billions every year. Many of these attacks wouldnt be possible if all routers were kept updated. Once a malware infects a router, it can steal bandwidth and spread itself across the network to other devices.

But even without a presence of a dangerous malware, routers with old firmware perform worse than routers that are properly updated.

To check if your router is running the newest firmware available:

  • Launch a web browser on your computer or mobile device and connect to your routers network.
  • Enter the IP address of the router into the web browser.
  • If you dont know what the IP address is, check if there is an information sticker somewhere on the router.
  • Log in with admin username and password.
  • Again, if you dont know what the right admin password is, look at the information sticker on the bottom or back of your router.
  • Select an option called Firmware Update or Router Update.
  • Because there are many different routers, you may need to do some digging and detective work to find the right option.
  • Wait until your router finds and installs the latest firmware.
  • Never interrupt the update. If it takes a long time and your router appears to be unresponsive, give it a few more minutes before you disconnect the router from power and turn it on again.

    Choose Your Service Level Wisely

ISPs offer a ton of choices, and make it confusing on purpose so you end up picking an expensive one just to be sure you have what you need. The truth is most people can probably do pretty much everything they need on the lowest tier they offer.

A 1080p Netflix stream will work fine on a 25 Mbps connection, which is what I have. I also work entirely online, stream high-def videos at a dozen sites all day, play games, download movies and do lots of other stuff, sometimes all at the same time. I think I pay $45 a month. But rates like mine might not be advertised prominently or at all. I only found out when I literally asked what the cheapest possible option was.

That said, if you have three kids who like to watch videos simultaneously, or you have a 4K streaming setup that you use a lot, youll want to bump that up a bit. But youd be surprised how seldom the speed limit actually comes into play.

To be clear, its still important that higher tiers are available, and that internet providers upgrade their infrastructure, because competition and reliability need to go up and prices need to come down. The full promise of broadband should be accessible to everyone for a reasonable fee, and thats still not the case.

Almost certainly 18 for the simple reason that VM broadband packages are credit agreements, and the law says that you have to be over 18 to get credit.

Unless there’s some no credit check, pre-pay broadband deal that I’m unaware of.

How To Get Wifi Without An Internet Provider

Without leeching off of your neighbors

Youve moved into a new place and someone accidentally dug up your fibre connection or you just dont have the budget for a broadband home internet connection right now, so how do you get connected to the Internet? There are many reasons you might not have WiFi internet access when you need it.

Is there a way to get WiFi without an internet provider? Actually, weve got six things you can try.

If you prefer to quickly watch a video instead of reading through the article below, make sure to check out our YouTube video where we go through the different ways you can get WiFi Internet without an ISP.

    Your Router Can’t Work Miracles

How Old Do You Have to Be to Get a Credit Card?

One last point: It’s important to understand that your router doesn’t generate speed or bandwidth — it takes whatever bandwidth you’re paying for from your internet service provider and sends it out into your home so that wireless devices can connect. If that incoming bandwidth is limited to begin with, there’s really not much your router can do about it.

Eventually, improvements to things like satellite internet and continued 5G and fiber deployments should help bridge the bandwidth gap in parts of the country that lack access to high speeds. But until that happens, paying extra for an upgraded router is probably overkill.

“I wish there was an answer to say, ‘Yeah, you could upgrade your router, and that’ll solve your bandwidth problem on the ISP,'” Coleman says. “But the answer is not really.”

In a “small pipe” situation like that, Coleman’s recommendation is to focus on conserving your bandwidth — especially in the situation he described earlier, where Mom’s work calls are dropping due to the kids’ Netflix habits. His suggestion: Look for a router with good parental control settings.

“If you’re a parent, you can do time settings and firewall settings to restrict access of certain kinds of applications, as well as certain times when certain individuals could use it,” Coleman says. “My kids are grown now, but I used to do it back in the day!”
