Do You Need A Travel Router

Overall, we have found travel routers to be a benefit to our travels. They are generally easy to use once configured, and are compact and easy to travel with.

Given that many hotels only allow you to join a network using one device at a time , having a travel router makes it possible for us to use all our WiFi enabled devices at once without extra fees.

We currently use ours both at home to extend the range of our own home Internet and while traveling to extend wireless Internet connections, to login multiple devices using one password, and to add a little security while using public WiFi hotspots.

If you are planning to use public WiFI a lot while traveling, we recommend making sure you get a travel router that is compatible with a VPN service. You can see our guide to VPNs for travel if you are looking for tips on choosing a VPN provider.

What issues do you have related to using the Internet while traveling? Have you used or would you consider using a travel router? As always, wed love to hear any advice, tips, or questions you may have!

Why Is Hotel Wifi So Terrible

Get BETTER Wireless Internet in a Hotel

Hotel Internet Is So Terrible First, hotels often do not invest in high-end hardware and Internet connectivity. The bare minimum is being met even at expensive hotels. It is due to the large number of people trying to use the Internet at the same time that this infrastructure is in a state of disrepair.

Whiling Away Time On Airport Wi

If youre flying to your destination, you may plan on catching up on emails or posting your status on social media. Some airports offer free, time-limited Wi-Fi, but whether its secure is always an unknown.

When a Wi-Fi hotspot is unsecured, that means data you transmit or receive is unprotected. Anybody on the same network could spy on your information if they have the know-how

If you do decide to use free public Wi-Fi, be careful about the types of sites you visit. Its safest not to log in to any sites that require a password, because hackers could be using software kits to capture yours.

Avoid websites that hold any of your sensitive information, like banking or financial institutions, or transactional sites such as online retailers on which you store credit card information.

Use A Long Range Router

Even if you have a fast connection, too many electronics can often overwhelm your WiFi. A typical home is streaming video, playing games, and surfing the Internet at the same time. Luckily theres long range smart routers like the Nighthawk that promise WiFi for up to 45 devices, and houses and businesses as large as 3,000 square feet.

Dont Hide Your Router

Routers can be disgusting looking things and your first instinct is to hide it behind your television or in a box. Resist that urge as a wide open router, clear of obstructions and with antennas pointed upwards, will perform better. Make sure the router is relatively close to where youll be using the WiFi.

How To Bypass Hotel Wifi Thottling

Sometimes the reason your hotel wi-fi is slow is not because of a poor signal.

Sometimes your hotel may be deliberately slowing down your wi-fi speed.

Take a look at this SpeedTest result from my current hotel wifi that I obtained using my laptop.

Both the download and the upload speeds have been capped at 24 Mbps.

If I test my cell phone and my laptop simultaneously both manage to get 24 Mbps speeds.

So the hotel is limiting the speed per connection.

You can bypass this type of throttling by combining multiple connections.

So if my laptop had two wifi adapters I could combine two connections and get 48 Mbps speeds.

Or you could connect using an ethernet port and wifi. The two streams could be combined to bypass the speed limit.

To do this you will need software that combines multiple internet connections. Speedify makes both desktop software for Windows or macOS and theyll also do you an app for your cell phone on Android or iPhone.

The only thing I would say is that its a bit of a dick move. The hotel in this case has restricted the internet speed to evenly share the available bandwidth among all the guests.

If you are adding multiple wifi adapters and combing them you are sort of hogging the bandwidth and being unfair to other hotel guests.

Try to read reviews and check hotel internet speeds before you book the hotel. Cheap hotels will say they provide internet access but dont have the budget to pay for high-speed internet access for all guests.

What This Wont Solve

If the hotel requires you to register or pay for premium Internet, this wont get around that. What this will do is ensure you get the best speeds possible, especially if youre paying extra for it.

If the hotel room really doesnt have a working ethernet connection, then youre also out of luck. For situations like this I also have a Wi-Fi LTE hotspot on me when traveling.

Soho Vs Enterprise Gear

I know Im going to get in trouble with folks who are fascinated with buying the cheapest possible gear. But I have no problem stating you should be using Enterprise-class gear and NOT SoHo-class gear. Youd think this would be obvious, but many want to ignore that equipment manufacturers use different components that work better than others. Not to mention many years of coding of firmware to get the most possible out of the hardware.

In the industry there is a term, CoGS for Cost of Goods Sold. Usually in the order of 1/6th or 1/8th of the retail price of the device. So if your retail price is $1,200the CoGS might be $200. If you think of SoHo devices that retail for $120-their CoGS might be only $20 of actual hard costs for the chips, case, motherboard, installation, packaging, etc. Think for a minute the CoGS of a top-of-the-line enterprise AP is nearly double the retail price of a SoHo AP. Let that sink in for a minute.

There IS a huge difference between the capabilities RAM, CPU, antennas, and hardware quality between SoHo and Enterprise gear. That will effect the results, especially as we add more and more load to our Wireless networks.

SoHo gear is designed and tested for the market intended that of a house with a handful of Wi-Fi devices. If that is where you are putting your Wi-Fi then by all means use SoHo gear. But a hotel is NOT a home environment, and needs a much higher standard of quality.

Turn Off Low Data Rates

Turn off supported data rates of 1, 2, 5.5, and 11 Mbps. Yes this will automatically not allow any 802.11b-only devices to connect. That is a good thing. I seriously doubt people who can afford a night in a hotel room still are using B-only devices. You dont want those on your network anyway they cause havoc and slow down all other devices, and require protection mechanisms to be implemented that devastate your potential data rates.

Now on to the slower OFDM rates. Ive seen good results turning off 6Mbps and 12Mbps and allowing only 18Mbps or higher. For some sites, weve moved that up to a minimum of 24Mbps and seen even better results. But be a bit careful and measure before and after changes to minimize errors and average data rates.

The more devices that communicate at faster data rates, the total net capacity youll have on your network.

What Is A Mesh Wi

If you live in a very large home or have a significant number of smart home devices, you may need more coverage than a single router can deliver.

And these days, your best bet to ensure optimal performance in such spaces is a mesh Wi-Fi system, which uses multiple smaller routers that communicate with one another wirelessly while appearing to your devices as a single network.

Some mesh wireless systems use a combination of base and satellite units, others use identical small routers and there are even some stand-alone routers that let you add satellites after the fact. Either way, they communicate with one another on a separate Wi-Fi backhaul channel and give you seamless Wi-Fi around your house or apartment. The key is to configure them correctly and set them up in the right spots to get around obstacles. Then, your devices can hopscotch among the units placed throughout your home to effectively eliminate dead zones and improve wireless internet speeds.

If thats not enough, you can also find systems that give you the option of connecting network access points with Ethernet cables, instead of a wireless signal, which gives you even better performance at the cost of having to run cabling throughout your home
