How To Check If Wifi Is 2.4

When Choosing A Channel For A 24 Ghz Frequency Networks:

How to tell if WiFi Networks around you are 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz & why it matters
  • Pick channel 1, 6, or 11. These channels don’t overlap and will provide the best reliability.

  • When choosing between channels 1, 6 or 11, choose the strongest low signal from your access point or router. For example, in the image above, this would be channel 1.

  • Choose a channel that has the fewest access points on it .

  • If all three channels are about the same in terms of the number of access points and the weakest signal, choose the channel with the fewest number of access points that are on overlapping channels.

  • For 5 GHz networks, overlap is less of an issue, so choose the channel with the fewest access points for your signal strength.

Note: Many consumer Wi-Fi routers or other access points have an Auto option where the access point will automatically pick the best channel and use that. Some work great and pick the best channel, but others might not, so you should pick the best channel for your home.

    B Signal Saturation Or Interferences

Signal saturation is also typical, especially in urban environments. Just look at your phones Wi-Fi scan, and chances are youll see a ton of available networks. Even though you have no access to most, they all are in your airspace, taking up precious spectrum allocation.

So, the more broadcasters of different types in the vicinity, the more likely youll have to deal with interferences. Thats not to mention other types of devices that might also use the same frequencies.

Extra: The curious case of Bluetooth

The popular Bluetooth connection method also uses the 2.4GHz band. However, its very different and generally wont cause interference.

Thats because Bluetooth is mostly for peer-to-peer connections which dont require a fixed channel. As a result, it can channel hop, meaning it picks and chooses the most unoccupied channel to use in real-time. And it does that 1600 times per second.

As a result, generally, Bluetooth doesnt affect Wi-Fi. Except in two instances, I can think of:

    • The 2.4GHz band is fully saturated: Now, no hopping can help, but well, chances are non-Bluetooth devices saturate it.
    • Hardware sharing: This only applies to clients. Many Wi-Fi/Bluetooth combo chips dont work well when both wireless functions are used simultaneously. This is rarely the case, if at all, with newer chips.

Does 5ghz Wifi Go Through Walls

Todays WiFi gear operates at either 2.4GHz or 5GHz. Their higher frequencies make it harder for the signals to maintain their strength as they pass through obstructions. According to the WiFi Alliance, 802.11ah will also achieve nearly double the range of current standards. Theres another bonus, too.

How To Connect To A Device That Insists On A 24 Ghz Wireless Network

We recently upgraded our wireless network to a . A mesh network system is excellent for improving coverage in a home or office. One thing that practically many mesh networks do is combine the 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz bands together under the same SSID. For those unaware of the benefits, the 5.0 GHz band provides significant throughput improvements but only at short distances from the router.

In the case of Google Wifi, the mesh network will typically prefer the 5.0 GHz network over the 2.4 GHz band. Google WiFi has intelligence that determines when the 2.4 GHz bands will provide a more stable connection versus 5.0 GHz. So suffice it to say, you will be connected to 5.0 GHz most of the time, thats assuming your phone or tablet support that band.

How Do You Change Frequency Settings

How to Check if your Computer Supports 2.4 or 5GHz WiFi ...

Whether you choose 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, you need to make sure your wireless is enabled on your modem/router and set to use the same frequency. Check your specific model of router for compatibility and frequency capabilities.

With a dual-band router, you can set it to transmit at both frequencies concurrently. In this case, you typically have two networks that appear in your network list, with identical names except for a “5G” or “2.4G” at the end. You can then choose to connect each individual device to either network.

On most newer modems, there is also a way to find the best WiFi channel for your environment and then change the channel as needed in the modem’s wireless settings. This way you can make the most of the different capabilities of 2.4 GHz vs. 5GHz WiFi.

How To Maintain Faster Speeds Through Password Protection

Most households do not set separate passwords for 2.4 vs 5 GHz frequencies. But its a common practice at coffee shops and other places that offer Wi-Fi to patrons.

The reason for separately securing these frequencies is internet speed. Often the business will need strong Wi-Fi to maintain tools like their point of sale software. On busy days at the coffee shop, the company cant afford to let busy radio signals slow down their line.

So, theyll leave one frequency public. Theyll gate the second frequency behind a private password that only select team members know.

Depending on your Wi-Fi provider, you can likely use this same tactic at home to reserve less noisy internet frequencies for yourself in a Wi-Fi-heavy house. Some families, for example, will create separate passwords for the 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi. They might provide their children with the 2.4 GHz password . Meanwhile, the parents will use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi for their computers.

This simple tactic can improve your internet speeds by keeping too many people from operating on the same radio frequency.

Technology is an odd duck: in less than twenty years, Wi-Fi has gone from an amazing luxury to an assumed inclusion in every device you own. And yet, theres plenty of room for improvementwhich is why you should consider disabling the old 2.4GHz band on your homes Wi-Fi network and using the newer, faster, less crowded 5GHz band exclusively.

    Why? Lets break it down.

Ghz Is Smarter Than People Give It Credit For

5GHz may be faster, but high-frequency radio waves cant travel as far as low-frequency signals, and they cant penetrate as well through solid walls and appliancesthats just a function of the physics of radio waves. So wouldnt disabling 2.4GHz cause other problems with range and interference?

Not necessarily: the engineers and software designers behind the newer standards have found ways to compensate. Both N and AC Wi-Fi devices support beamforming, a technique for sending radio signals in a specific direction for a cleaner, longer connection, rather than a 360-degree coverage area that doesnt account for the physical location of devices.

In addition to beamforming for a stronger point-to-point connection, N and AC standards allow for more individual channels within the Wi-Fi spectrum, and AC has wider channels with support for up to 160MHz. In laymans terms, that means its easier for multiple high-frequency Wi-Fi devices to connect to the same router with less interference. Both N and AC standards support MU-MIMO for multiple simultaneous data transmissions as well. You might find that disabling 2.4GHz doesnt cause any range or interference problems at allthe only way to know is to try it out.

    Check The Channel Width

Though it’s less common, the channel width setting for a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network can cause problems. 2.4 GHz band networks have two channel widths: 20 MHz and 40 MHz . While the 40 MHz channel band offers more throughput, some older Wi-Fi network adapters and drivers don’t work well with it. If you’re not getting a reliable Wi-Fi connection but your signal strength is strong and the Wi-Fi channel is clear, check the Channel Width setting for your access point by signing in to it. Typically, it’ll be set to Auto or 20/40 MHz or something similar when you get it. If your access point or router is set to one of these, try setting it to 20 MHz instead.

Why Is 5ghz Wifi Not Showing

The most common of them all is when users get a new router. When the router is set up, instead of their PCs WiFi Adapter detecting both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bandwidth signals, it only detects 2.4GHz bandwidth signal. There are various reasons because of which the problem of 5GHz WiFi not showing up in Windows 10 may occur.

    Choose Different Network Names

Disable A Band On Your Router Settings

In some cases, you may not want any device to connect to one of the frequency bands that your router offers. The most foolproof method would be to disable one band or the other entirely. Just keep in mind that some older devices cannot connect to a 5GHz network at all, so if you do disable your 2.4GHz network, thats likely to cut certain devices out.

Every router or Wi-Fi access point has its brand-specific interface and menu arrangement. So youll have to refer to your router documentation for exact information. Nonetheless, the basic process is more or less universal.

  • Open a web browser on a device thats connected to the router.
  • Enter the routers IP address. Here, its, but it will be in your routers manual or on a sticker underneath the device.
  • Log in to the router. If youve never set a custom username or password, the listed default password on a sticker underneath the router should work.
  • Now look for the Wi-Fi settings section.
  • Within that menu, there should be a place to disable individual bands. In the case of this router, the settings were under Wi-Fi Name & Password.
  • Now that youve switched off the band you dont want, theres no way any device can connect to it.

How To Disable The 24ghz Network On Your Router

Okay, youre convinced, and youre ready to disable the 2.4GHz network. First, ensure that you arent using any legacy devices that rely on 2.4GHz, like an older Roku, game console, or Kindle. If you still have one of those devices, sadly youll need to keep both bands turned on.

If, however, all your devices are 5GHz-compatible, heres how to disable the old 2.4Ghz network. Load up your routers browser-based configuration interface and find the separate controls, one for 2.4GHz and one for 5GHz. You can simply switch the former off to make sure everythings running on N or AC Wi-Fi all at once. Every router interface is different, so we cant tell you exactly where this is, but if you browse the Wireless or Wi-Fi section of the configuration interface, you should be able to find an off switch.

Once its disabled, youre all setyour old 2.4GHz appliances should hopefully work a little better, and your Wi-Fi devices will continue reaping the speed benefits of the fast 5GHz band.
