How wifi admin or parents checking your browsing history. Watch out!

One question we get constantly asked by our community is, Can my WiFi provider see my search history?

In this article, we want to expand on that and provide a comprehensive answer.

But first things first.

Yes, potentially, your WiFi provider or a WiFi owner can see what sites you visit.

However, the ability to check what you do on WiFi depends on a variety of factors.

The main ones are:

  • Type of router you were connected to
  • Implementation of a TLS/SSL certificate on the website you visited
  • Presence of an active VPN connection

Lets also not forget that your WiFi provider can try to be using packet sniffing tools like, for example, WireShark.

From that point, everything gets way trickier, and therefore we strongly recommend that you should keep your VPN on all the time.

Now, lets dive deeper into details.

Stop People From Seeing What You Are Doing On Your Wifi

If you dont want people to see your browsing activity. There are 3 things you need to do

    1. When it comes to sensitive matters, dont use the site that doesnt have https. Thankfully, most sites on the Internet support https by default. When you are browsing sites that have https like Reddit, people who are spying on you or even your ISP, may be able to see that you connected to reddit servers IP address, but he cannot see the traffic that youre communicating.

If the site doesnt enforce https by default but still has https as an option, then you can install HTTPS Everywhere. Its a browser extension for Firefox, Chrome, and Opera, that encrypts your communications with many major websites. This will not make the HTTP site to HTTPS, but for some sites that dont enforce https or have partial https on the checkout page, this extension will enforce it the on entire site.

    2. Use a VPN. A VPN will bypass router level logging. If you are not sure which VPN to use, here our list of best free VPN apps we recommend at TechWiser

    3. Use other sources of the Internet for sensitive web search like creating a hotspot from your smartphone. For an extra layer of protection, you even

There are other ways to monitor your network traffic such as setting up a new firewall, but this could be costly and mostly used by enterprises.

    How To Test Upload Speed

Upload speed is tested by reversing the sequence of the download analysis. Again multiple connections are opened to the test server. Instead of downloading a file, a large file of random data is created on your device and pushed through all connections to the server. Pushing the data to the server over the network via multiple streams ensures that the maximum throughput is measured. Again, recording the data throughput against time yields the available internet speed for uploading data.

    The Advantages Of Router Tracking

There is third-party software that uses parental control to track a family members browsing activity. However, any tech-savvy individual can discover workarounds with a simple Google search. Even worse, some of these tools have to be installed on the target computer.

But by monitoring user activity through your router, you can be a bit more discreet about it. It is also harder to remove by the computer user.

Your router stores all sites users visit even ones that were accessed through Incognito Mode.

Do Vpns Hide My Browsing History From Isps

VPNs encrypt all internet traffic, effectively hiding your browsing history from your ISP. However, that doesnt mean the ISP is blind to your activities. They may be able to tell that youre connected to a VPN and for how long, based on the fact that the encrypted traffic is headed to an IP address of a VPN server. They can also see the size of incoming and outgoing traffic, but the important thing is that they cant see the content. If your sole purpose is to hide your browsing history from your ISP, a VPN will do the trick.

    How Browsing With Vpns Works

When youre browsing without a VPN, your internet traffic passes through your router and internet service provider before reaching the destination website. All three checkpoints can see the traffic coming from your computer.

A VPN adds encryption and a VPN server to the process. Heres how it goes:

  • The VPN encrypts your internet traffic before it leaves your computer.
  • The encrypted traffic passes through your router and ISP, but because its encrypted, neither of them can see its content.
  • The VPN server decrypts the traffic and then sends it to the destination website, making it appear as though the traffic came from the servers IP address instead of yours.

    Wifi Router History Limitations

A router may not be able to access the exact details of the viewed websites. This is because various servers across different sites can share IP addresses, and the IP addresses may be similar. An IP address is a code, much like a Social Security number, and is used for identifying computers.

An IP address lookup tool is needed to lookup IP addresses. Mac and Linux use the command line tools dig and host, and Windows uses nslookup. Online tools are also available to make sense of the IP address, deciphering it to one the human eye can read.

The router cannot access the files, webpages, or images accessed by PCs and devices on your Wi-Fi network due to encryption. You may get a rough idea of the visited sites, but you cannot prove what content was viewed.

If the people you are trying to check up on have installed VPN, Tor browsers, or are browsing incognito, it may be more challenging to check on their activities. These tools mask a devices IP address, making it hard to tell which device accessed which site.

How Do I Clear My Wi

Can the Wifi provider see your browsing history ...

To ensure your browsing history is private, you can remove your browsing history by clearing your Wi-Fi router history.

To clear your Wi-Fi router, type into the address bar: 192.168.0.1 this is the most common IP address. If the first IP address does not work, you can also try 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1. On the off chance neither of these IP addresses work, try rebooting your router, and trying again.

When you hit enter, this is going to take you to a log-on page. Enter the routers username and password this can be found on the sticker on the actual router itself. Typically, the username for the log-in to these IP addresses are Admin, and the password is either Password or 1234.

Once the log-in credentials have been entered, you are going to be brought to a screen that displays your routers information, the software, and wireless information. On this page, you can also see your routers status and who else is connected to your system.

To delete your browsing history from your Wi-Fi router, click on System Log. When you click here, there is going to be the option to Clear Log, which is then going to lead to a pop-up confirming the action of cleaning. Select either OK or Yes.

Anyone who has access to your router history is no longer going to be able to see what you have browsing once you delete history, nor are they going to be able to retrieve it.

We live in an era where the internet rules our lives. The internet inspires almost everything we do we use it to control our smart homes from the devices. However, it can be tough to monitor our children, students, or employees on the internet especially when everyone knows how to clear browsing history.

This is why we will be covering how to check wifi router history in this article.

It may not be possible to see the content, but you can check the visited sites IP addresses to get visibility on the internet activity. You can either do this via a WiFi history viewer or go to your PC and check the router history on the routers log.

You can utilize a normal web browser to connect to your router and enter a username and password to access the data on the devices log. This data includes IP addresses, date of access, and amount of data transferred.

Depending on the router, you may need to turn on the logging feature to access this data later. Look it up in the manual that came with your router or online or if your ISP company provided your router, contact them for more details.

You can also contact the ISP provider for a log of your router if all else fails, as they have access to the details. However, instead of going through that tricky process, you can check for yourself the routers activity logs.

How To Hide Your Browsing History From Your Employer

Sometimes, employers use their access to the router to see what their employees do online. If you dont want to be tracked, theres an easy fix: Get a VPN if VPNs are allowed in your office, that is. As we mentioned above, there are ways to detect a VPN in a network, such as by monitoring networking ports, so you could get into trouble if VPNs are not allowed.

Another solution, which works even if VPNs are not allowed in your office, is to use your mobile data to browse. Employers can track what youre doing over the office network, but not when youre on mobile data. Of course, you could get in trouble for being on your phone, but thats another story.
