Use A Network Scanner To See Whos Using Your Wifi
Using your routers web interface is the ideal way of checking whos connected to your WiFi. However, there are other methods you can use. If your router doesnt offer an option to see the list via its web interface, you can download software to your computer that will scan the WiFi network youre using and list the connected devices.
There are quite a few different network scanners out there that you can use. To name a few tools that have proven its worth, we recommend LanScan for Mac, SoftPerfect for Windows and Mac, and Angry IP Scanner for Windows, Mac, and Linux.
The only downside is that these apps will only list active devices the ones that are currently online. That means you wont see any devices that are currently offline on the list.
Types Of Wireless Network Names
Wireless Network names can be up to 32 characters long. The names are case sensitive.
There are really no restrictions as to what you can name your network. Some people really bring the creativity when naming their wireless networks.
But most wireless routers are named after the associated Internet Service Provider. Look for a router such as Comcast001 or CharterWirelessRouter.
If someone personally setup your internet, they likely named your wireless network something youll easily recognize. Look for FAMILY NAME Network or something similar.
If you just cant find any familiar wireless network names your best option is to call your ISP. They should be able to identify which router is yours.
Next Select Your Network And Connect Using Your Wifi Password
Setup varies slightly by device, but most devices have a Wireless or WiFi Network Settings menu, where you will find a list of all the networks detected in your area.
- The SSID printed on the modem label is the Network Name that will appear on your device network list.
- The key/passphrase on the modem label is the password you will enter to connect your device to the network.
To connect more than one device to your WiFi network, you simply repeat the above steps for each device.

How To Know If You Have A Smart Tv
If your TV was made after 1994 theres a reasonably good chance its a smart TV. If your TV was made after 2010 its almost certainly a Smart TV.
One way to tell if your TV is Smart is to look through the menus. Do you see an option to watch Netflix, Amazon Prime and other streaming video services?
Even if you cant access those options right now just their presence in the menus indicates you have a smart TV.
If you already have a Smart TV, and you already have a home WiFi network, then connecting the two just makes sense. Heres what to do:

How To See Whos Connected To Your Wifi Network
Now that you have your IP address, open a new browser tab and type it in. This will take you to the routers login page. Some routers will have admin and password as the .
Alternatively, you can find those details on the backside of your router together with the IP address. If you have changed that previously, enter your new details to log in. If you dont remember your username and password, you can reset the router and then use the default credentials to log in.
After you log in, youll need to navigate to the list of connected devices. Depending on your router, this information could be located in different places.
Some routers will have all the devices listed on the main page under WiFi.
On D-Link routers, you have to go to Status tab and find Wireless Clients to get the list of the devices.
On Verizon routers the section you need is called My Network. While on Netgear, you need to look for Attached Devices.
No matter what router youre using, the list of connected devices normally offer the same information. Youll see some sort of table that includes the hostname and MAC address for every device on the list.
Laptops Smartphones And Tablets
- Mirrors your laptop, smartphone, or tablets screen
- Plays discs
- Runs streaming apps
- May require a separate cable or adapter
- Mirrors your screen
You can also mirror your laptop, smartphone, or tablet screen by connecting either device to your TV with an HDMI cable. That means you can watch physical media if your laptop has a Blu-ray or DVD drive. You can also play media from your hard drive or external drives. And most Macs and PCs support numerous streaming apps.
With screen-mirroring, be sure to close any tabs you dont want others to see. Otherwise, everyone whos joined you for movie night will find out you like bad music or naughty stuff.

How To Configure Quality Of Service
As mentioned above, QoS is one of the most useful features for online entertainment. It allows you to select and prioritize the upstream and downstream traffic on your network, which can provide a performance boost for your favorite streaming service or online game. Most routers will have a tab in their app/configuration page dedicated to traffic monitoring. Navigate to this and find the QoS tab. Turn QoS on, and then you can prioritize certain services, such as online games or video streaming.
You can also prioritize devices on the network. Years ago, this was usually done by supplying the device’s unique MAC address and setting a priority level for that device. These days, vendors like Netgear are increasingly supplying more intuitive, graphical approaches to the same idea, as in the Manual Prioritization screenshot below.
QoS options can also allow you to see how your total bandwidth is being distributed by device, so you can spot anyone grabbing more than their fair or desired share.
These days, most traffic is download in nature, especially with multimedia streaming. If you find your streaming services pausing to buffer every so often, try using QoS to prioritize their traffic. However, in general, only gamers need to worry about upstream prioritization.

Reset Your Phone’s Network And Os Settings
If all else fails, the issue might be with your phone, not your internet.
Restarting your phone can clear glitches and help it reconnect to Wi-Fi.
If your phone still won’t connect, then it’s time to do some resetting. In the Settings app, go to “General Management.” There, tap “Reset.”
First, we’ll try the “Reset Network Settings” option, which clears away your network and Bluetooth settings. Your phone will restart try connecting to Wi-Fi again.
If that didn’t work, next try the “Reset Settings” option, which will erase all your custom settings, as well as any ringtones you’ve changed your apps, pictures, and other personal data are safe, though.
Finally, you can try a “Factory Data Reset.” This will erase everything on the phone, and return it to its default factory conditions, as if you’d never used it before. This will delete all your data, so be careful here.
If nothing else has worked, you should contact your phone’s manufacturer.

Positioning The Wireless Router
Put your wireless router somewhere where it will receive the strongest signal with the least amount of interference. For better results, follow these tips:
Place your wireless router in a central location. Place the router as close to the center of your home as possible to increase the strength of the wireless signal throughout your home.
Position the wireless router off the floor and away from walls and metal objects, such as metal file cabinets. The fewer physical obstructions between your PC and the router’s signal, the more likely that you’ll be using the router’s full signal strength.
Reduce interference. Some networking equipment uses a 2.4 gigahertz radio frequency. This is the same frequency as most microwaves and many cordless phones. If you turn on the microwave or get a call on a cordless phone, your wireless signal might be temporarily interrupted. You can avoid most of these issues by using a cordless phone with a higher frequency, such as 5.8 GHz.

Check 8021x Eap Issues
If RADIUS is working but your Android Wi-Fi client’s connect requests are rejected, look for an 802.1X Extensible Authentication Protocol problem. Your client must support one of the EAP types required by your RADIUS server and must supply a valid login.
- If your RADIUS server requires EAP-TTLS or PEAP, set the client’s Security field to 802.1x EAP, select EAP method TTLS or PEAP when prompted, choose a phase 2 authentication , and enter your username and password. MSCHAPv2 is commonly used with passwords GTC is used for token authentication. For most networks, the anonymous identity field can be left blank. You may optionally choose a CA certificate to authenticate the RADIUS server.
- If your RADIUS server requires EAP-TLS, set the client’s Security field to 802.1x EAP, select EAP method TLS when prompted, enter your username and select a user certificate from the pull-down list.
If the only entry in the list is unspecified, you must first add a certificate file to your device. To do so, copy a certificate to a storage location accessible from your device . Hint: Email the file to yourself and save it to your device, or upload the file onto Google Drive.

How To Fix Your Network Problems
1. Just as your IT guy starts with a computer reboot, your internet service provider will tell you to unplug your modem and then plug it back in. If that doesnt work, unplug your router, give it a minute and then plug it back in. Sometimes, restarting your modem or router will reset your network and the issue magically disappears.
2. Next, check your wireless network configuration. Many routers today use dual-band technology to extend the routers range and Wi-Fi speeds. That means your router enables Wi-Fi communication via 2.4 GHz channels or 5 GHz channels.
However, settings on your router could have changed without you knowing and require your device to use a specific channel. Sometimes those channels appear like separate Wi-Fi networks on your device. Your phone or laptop may try to connect to a specific channel that seems available, but its not the network connection your router now requires. Check what channel your routers using by logging into your routers web interface.
Once you figure out if your router is set to a specific channel, you can also reset which channel your router uses. Resetting the channel can fix connection issues caused by an overcrowded Wi-Fi channel. Most 2.4 GHz routers come with a default channel of 6, but you can change the channel by logging into your routers control panel using the router IP address.
