How to Establish Home WiFi Connection & Authenticate at Home

Wifi is a technology that uses radio waves to connect our devices to the internet wirelessly.

Read on to learn:

Wifi: the key benefits and the basics of how it works

The benefit of wifi is obvious: a wireless internet connection means our devices are not tied to a fixed location within a property. You see, wifi transmits a property’s internet connection via special radio signals, allowing us to move around from one room to another, with no interruption to our internet connection.

This is obviously super handy for users of laptops, tablets and mobile devices. Once we’re connected to wifi, access to the internet is suddenly so much more convenient and flexible.

Sunny day outside? Why not catch up on your emails whilst sipping a coffee in the garden with wifi, you can!

The basics of wifi in summary:

    • Wifi is the wireless technology that all internet-enabled devices use to get online without messing around with cables.
    • Home wifi internet is made possible via a wireless router, which is basically a box that transmits and receives wireless signals between an internet connection and internet-enabled devices.
    • To communicate with a router and connect to wifi, a device must have a wireless adaptor. Most internet-enabled devices today come with a wireless adaptor built in but older computers may require a plug-in adaptor in order to get online wirelessly

You should now be connected to wifi!

    What youll need:

    Get The Right Equipment

Before you can set up your wireless network, heres what youll need:

Broadband Internet connection and modem. A broadband Internet connection is a high-speed Internet connection. Digital Subscriber Line and cable are two of the most common broadband connections. You can get a broadband connection by contacting an Internet service provider . Typically, ISPs that provide DSL are telephone companies and ISPs that provide cable are cable TV companies. ISPs frequently offer broadband modems. Some ISPs also offer combination modem/wireless routers. You can also find these at computer or electronics stores, and online.

Wireless router. A router sends info between your network and the Internet. With a wireless router, you can connect PCs to your network using radio signals instead of wires. There are several different kinds of wireless network technologies, whichinclude 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11n, 802.11ac, and 802.11ax.

Wireless network adapter. A wireless network adapter is a device that connects your PC to a wireless network. To connect your portable or desktop PC to your wireless network, the PC must have a wireless network adapter. Most laptops and tabletsand some desktop PCscome with a wireless network adapter already installed.

To check whether your PC has a wireless network adapter:

  • Select Start , type device manager in the search box, and then select Device Manager.

  • Expand Network adapters.

  • Look for a network adapter that might have wireless in the name.

  • Why Is My Wifi Signal So Bad 7 Factors That Affect Wifi Performance

WiFi can be a fickle thing. You may be enjoying a perfectly strong WiFi signal, move just a few steps in one direction, and watch it drop to one bar.

The seemingly unreliable nature of WiFi networks has everything to do with the fact that there are many factors that influence their performance.

  • Physical distance: For obvious technical and safety reasons, WiFi routers dont have the same transmitting power as cell towers. Cheaper routers may even struggle to cover a relatively small apartment with a strong WiFi signal let alone an entire house. You can determine the reach of your WiFi router using a WiFi analyzer app like NetSpot.
  • Obstructions: WiFi signals can be partially absorbed or even completely blocked by various obstacles and objects, including walls, duct work, furniture, home appliances, and even people. These WiFi blockers have especially negative effect on 5 GHz WiFi networks, because higher frequency signals dont penetrate solid objects nearly as well as lower frequency signals.
  • Interference: WiFi signals occupy the same radio frequency band of the electromagnetic spectrum actual radios, cell phones, microwave ovens, walkie talkies, baby monitors, and many other devices, all of which can interfere with WiFi signals. Of course, WiFi networks can also interfere with one another, a problem thats especially common in apartment buildings and other densely populated areas.

Cable Tethering To A Mobile Device

If you only need to connect one device to the internet, why use WiFi at all? Instead of creating a WiFi hotspot, consider using a USB cable to tether your phone or tablet directly to your computer.

This has a few advantages over the WiFi hotspot method. No one can hack into your network, the computer charges the device, and you may even get faster speeds over the USB connection than WiFi. All the other stuff about data prices and tethering policies still apply though.

    Buying A Portable Cellular Router

How to establish a wireless connection between my Philips ...

Remember how we said that using your smartphones data plan through a WiFi hotspot could be expensive? Well, some mobile internet providers have seen a gap in the market and will sell you a data-only SIM card that isnt meant to go in a phone.

Instead, you can use these SIM cards with battery-powered portable 4G routers. These offer a dedicated WiFi hotspot and also network your devices together as a bonus. So youll have WiFi without an internet provider wherever you go.

If your mobile data plan is good enough, you can simply use this for all your internet needs whether out on the road or when you get home. Simply plug the mobile router in to stop the battery from running dry.

Installing a router is the first step to creating a solid home network, but how do you choose the right one? And once you’ve purchased your router, how do you go about setting it up? Follow this guide to get the right router configured for a secure wireless network.

Installing Software To Create A Login Page

Setting up an additional login page requires the software to sit in between the adapter that acts as the access point and the adapter that accesses the internet to intercept web traffic and redirect to the login page before allowing access. There are very few free Windows applications that can do this without the need of external access points or extra hardware, here are the quick setup guides for three applications that can do the job, each has its own plus and minus points.

What makes ARPMiner useful is the fact its very easy to configure while offering enough to get a simple login page up and running. There are more advanced options such as RADIUS accounting but they are only available in the paid versions which start at $220.

    1. and then install it. After installation, launch ARPMiner making sure the WiFi Creator hotspot is already running. You need to make sure TekpSpot.exe is allowed in your firewall from the ARPMiner Program Files folder which is the proxy/DNS service used. Or for testing, temporarily disable your firewall.

    2. Go to the Users tab and create a new hotspot user. In the boxes at the bottom enter a name, password and session duration in seconds. Although the user will get logged out after the time is reached, they can simply log back in, so the timer will not block expired users. Press Add/Update to add the user to the system.

    1. and install it, a reboot is required. Make sure your WiFi hotspot is running after the restart.

Choose The Best Internet Connection Type For Your New Home

When setting up Wi-Fi for home, youll need to decide which type of Internet connection is best for your circumstances and preferences.

The four most popular types of wireless Internet include:

    • DSL: Digital Subscriber Line Internet uses a phone line to transmit data over the Internet. It often comes at a lower costs, though Internet speeds are not as fast as some other options.
    • Satellite: Satellite Internet utilizes satellite signals for Internet connectivity. Satellite Internet speeds are similar to DSL connections, but Satellite Internet can also be affected by bad weather. Its best for those in rural areas that do not have Internet access otherwise.
    • Cable: Cable Internet operates like cable television, through the use of coaxial cables. This type of connection is much faster than a phone line, although internet speeds can slow down at peak times when many users are sharing the same area connection.
    • Fiber optic: Fiber optic Internet is considered the fastest option for high-speed connectivity. It utilizes cables made of thin glass or fibers to transmit data.

    Buy A Portable Router

How to Create a Wireless Network at Home

Portable routers, also known as travel routers, are not too different from the router you have at home. Instead of being connected to the internet via a cable, they have a slot for a SIM card, allowing you to connect to 3G and 4G networks practically anywhere in the world. Once connected, a portable router can create a WiFi network, so you can connect all your electronic devices to the internet.

Portable routers are relatively inexpensive, and they often last a whole day on a single charge. When selecting a portable router, pay attention to how many simultaneous connections it supports and how fast it is.

Cheaper portable routers typically support only three simultaneous connections, while premium portable routers can often handle more than 10 simultaneous high-speed connections. Of course, the free WiFi hotspot created using a portable router wont technically be free since you have to pay for the router and the SIM card, but its convenience makes up for the initial investment.

As soon as the Huzzah32 turns on, it will establish a Wi-Fi connection, but how do we perform actions once this connection has been established? This can easily be done with another connecting arrow from the Wi-Fi Connection block to any other element, but we can also check for no connection too! For now, we will create a blink example with an interval and GPIO block , but this time the interval will be triggered by the Wi-Fi Connection element.

If we select the arrow that connects the Wi-Fi Connection to the interval element, we must ensure that the Triggers property is set to Connected.

Connect Your Wifi Router To The Modem

Now that you have an internet modem in your home thats connected to the internet, your only remaining task is to connect to that internet connection with all your devices.

There are a few options, depending on the modem type. If the modem is WiFi enabled, then its also a WiFi router and itll produce an internal WiFi network that you can connect to with devices in your home. If it isnt, then youll need to purchase a secondary WiFi router to connect to your modem.

Dont let the ports on the back of these devices scare you. Connecting everything together is actually fairly easy.

Backhaul refers to the process of transmitting data from satellite nodes back to the main router and the internet. By default, mesh Wi-Fi systems are configured for wireless backhaul, which is where the mesh design comes in. Some systems use both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz radio bands for backhaul, intelligently managing data over both, while others use a dedicated 5GHz band for this purpose.
