How To Extend Wifi In Your Home

Powerline Adapters A Last Resort For Outdoor Wi

Add or Extend WIFI in your home!

One inexpensive option is using powerline adapters, which use your existing in-wall electrical wiring to extend your signal. You can plug some into an outdoor electrical socket, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find an affordable one that’s weather-resistant. An indoor powerline adapter can also overheat if you plug it into a covered outlet outdoors.

A temporary solution would be to use an indoor Wi-Fi powerline adapter, such as the Zyxel PLA5236KIT AC900 Powerline kit, which you plug in to an indoor outlet near where you need better coverage. Your range outdoors won’t be great, but it should improve your current setup.

Stop Relying On Wifi Calling And Get A Cell Phone Booster

Finally, if youre relying on WiFi calling and data to stay connected, you might also consider boosting your cell phone signal performance in the home. You may be better off with a higher cellular data plan and a strong signal for making calls, checking emails, and handling internet browsing. That way, you can ensure the WiFi router is positioned to support the living space, where youre likely to stream entertainment options, while cellular data can be used elsewhere on the property.

As cellular technology continues to advance, homeowners are starting to move away from traditional home internet. Fixed wireless and mobile internet solutions provide greater options for connecting to the internet at home. In these cases, access to a strong mobile signal is essential to staying connected.

Ultimately, how you connect and what might be best for you depends on your personal preferences and the needs of your family. Trying out some of these solutions can help you ensure everyone is covered when it comes to digital connections.

Add A Wifi Access Point

A wifi access point is similar to a satellite station of a mesh network. The difference is that an access point requires a hardwired connection to the network. Think of access points like a bridge connecting a city to an island . Without it, data would not be able to travel as far. These devices should live in rooms where the wifi signal is weakest. While access points are limited to rooms with Ethernet ports, they can help to extend your wifi range.

Mind The Gap With A Wireless Bridge

If running cable isnt possible, there is a very cost-effective option that can work under the right circumstances. With proper line of sight, you can extend your WiFi signal outside of your building to another using a wireless bridge.

A wireless bridge uses a microwave or infrared transmission to span a single Internet connection across two or more buildings. In order for a wireless bridge to work, youll have to mount a piece of equipment on each building. Both pieces of equipment must be able to see one another, without any obstruction. Though youll have to invest in some cabling and additional pieces of wireless equipment , this option is significantly cheaper than running fiber optic cable and can cover distances of similar sizes with very large throughput.

What Does ‘wifi 6’ Mean

How To Quickly and Easily Extend Wi

Once you start shopping for a router, youre likely to hear a lot of buzz about WiFi 6, a new technology standard that promises faster speeds, a longer range, and better support for the ever-expanding fleet of connected devices in modern homes.

Also known as 802.11ax, WiFi 6 replaces the WiFi 5 standard formerly known as 802.11ac, which debuted in 2013, and WiFi 4 , which dates back to 2009. The consortium that sets these standards announced a WiFi 6 certification program in September 2019, and a number of routers that support the standard are now available, including three models in our ratings.

But only a few internet-connected devices are currently WiFi 6- compatible. WiFi 4 and 5 devices can connect to a WiFi 6-compatible router, but they get none of the technologys speed benefits. So our experts say its fine to hold off on making the leap if you can save money on a slightly older model. If you still have a WiFi 4 router but your smartphone, TV, and laptop all support WiFi 5, get a WiFi 5 router instead, Fisco says. That will set you up for a good five years.

Adjust Your Router Settings

These extenders get the job done, but you might also be able to boost the signal from your wifi router by adjusting settings in the firmware. Depending on your firmware, you can amp up the throughput and achieve greater range and signal strength. Just be careful, as this will also make your router run hotter and could damage or shorten its lifespan.

If your router doesnt have this option, look into replacing the firmware with an open-source alternative like DD-WRT or Tomato. This will unlock capabilities that are walled off by the manufacturers firmware. Just use caution, as flashing the wrong firmware or flashing improperly could permanently brick the router.

Results: Deep Dish Vs Windsurfer

We tested these two wifi extenders on a Linksys WR1200AC router using the 5 Ghz frequency using the Wifi Analyzer app for Android. We recorded the signal strength in decibel-milliwatts and the distance at which the signal dropped below -80 dBm and became unusable from outside the house. The extenders were pointed out a window where in the testing direction.

Without any extender, standing about 10 feet away in the same room, we recorded -36 dBm. The signal dropped below -80 dBm at a distance of approximately 120 feet.

The Windsurfer extender increased the signal strength to -28 dBm, an 8 dBm improvement when standing in the same room. The distance at which the signal dropped out also increased to 140 feet, stretching 20 feet further.

The Deep Dish boosted signal strength to -30 dBm, not quite what we got from the Windsurfer, but still a significant improvement. The wifi range rose to 150 feet, 10 feet further than the Windsurfer and 30 feet more than no extender at all.

So the Deep Dish scored the best for range and the Windsurfer was best for power. The size difference probably has something to do with the results, but wed say either one is a good choice. For what its worth, I think the Windsurfer looks better, but if Im honest both are kind of eye sores. You might be better off trying out a different material with the Deep Dish, as well as a smaller template.

Whether you work from a home office in a newly converted shed on your property or you have a rambling ranch-style home that WiFi doesnt quite cover, you might be looking for a way to extend your WiFi range. For example, maybe WiFi connections are easy and strong in your living space but they dont quite reach the master bedroom or the loft room on the third floor.

Not having WiFi in certain locations in your home or on your property can reduce your ability to work, learn, or connect in locations where youre most comfortable. Thankfully, there are options for extending the range of your WiFi signal over larger areas.

Here are seven things you can try to get the most out of your WiFi signal or otherwise enhance digital connections throughout your home.

Replace Or Upgrade Your Router

Digital devices get obsolete fairly quickly in this modern world. Theres a reason many companies offer coverage for up to two or three years. By that time, the device you might be using is often out of date and ready for an upgrade.

The same is true with wireless routers. If your router is more than three years old, you may want to consider upgrading to newer technology. WiFi tech is constantly evolving similar to how cell signal is always moving toward something faster. Your old WiFi router may not support the newest technology, which could be slowing down your entire home network.

This is especially true if youve already updated devices in your home. Newer computers, smart televisions, and other connected devices might have been designed with newer WiFi technology in mind. They may not run efficiently on old tech.

    How To Get Great Wi

Need some helpful tips to improve the Wi-Fi in and around your home?

Work and Wi-Fi go hand and hand these days for a lot of us, anyways and now that the weather is nicer youre likely looking for more ways to work outside. Maybe out on your porch or in a park? That means extending your homes Wi-Fi network so you can get coverage in places you normally didnt, or creating your own mobile Wi-Fi signal that you can take with you. Heres what you can do.

A Wi-Fi extender, also known as a Wi-Fi booster, is a device that plugs into the wall and repeats the wireless signal from your router. It wont improve the signal in areas of your home that you already get Wi-Fi, as it simply extends the signal to cover more areas of the home. The good news is that there are a number of great Wi-Fi extenders that are affordable and easy to set up, like the Rockspace Dual-Band Wi-Fi Range Extender . If you have a dead zone in your house or directly near it, like a porch or a yard, and you want a low-cost way of curing it, a Wi-Fi extender might be your best bet.

There are Wi-Fi extenders that will extend your home’s Wi-Fi without creating a separate Wi-Fi network, but they are more expensive and they usually are proprietary to your Wi-Fi service. For example, if you get Wi-Fi through Verizon Fios you can buy a Wi-Fi extender, like the Fios Extender E3200 , that’s specifically designed to work with the latest Fios router .

Can You Use A Router App

How to Boost and Extend Wi

Possibly: Todays router apps can help manage more complex systems that involve repeaters. Both the Nighthawk and the Asus apps allow you to set up compatible routers as repeaters. Again, the router has has be on and signaling to work, but an Ethernet connection is not required. In the case of Asus, as you can see, its as simple as detecting the router and starting the setup by selecting the repeater option. For the Nighthawk app, you will want to select the router you use as a repeater, then enter the Nighthawk app and let it detect the router once you are connected. Both apps should have options to continue setup as a repeater.

However, this usually only works if your router app natively supports switching to a repeater, and the apps may play better with some routers than others. Note that the process is even easier if you are getting a compatible Wi-fi extender from the same brand, but that means you wouldnt be able to save by recycling an older router as a repeater.

If the app doesnt work, youll need to make the changes from DD-WRT on a desktop. Many router companies have phased out repeater modes, so they arent common on newer routers and their apps. Some router setups, like Google Nest WiFis mesh system, just arent compatible with extension modes at all because of the way they work. Thats why we recommend DD-WRT.

    Install An Additional Wifi Router

Alternatively, some choose to install an additional router in their home to extend WiFi coverage. However, this method requires network cabling at all the appropriate access points within your home, making initial setup and maintenance complex and expensive. Furthermore, installing an additional router does not circumvent the login disruptions, nor the bandwidth issues, described in the previous method.

Tools To Help You To Increase The Range

Here are some tools that might help you to increase the range of your Wi-Fi.

    • You can use a Wi-Fi repeater or extender. What they do is simply receiving the signal and after amplifying and boosting the network they send it ahead.
    • The waves of Wi-Fi travel in circular waves. If you imagine, then it somewhat looks like a circular ring surrounded by another bigger circular ring and so on. If your waves focus in one direction, you can use a thing called patch antenna.
    • You can get a Wi-Fi router with a lower radio wave frequency. The lower the frequency, the higher is the wavelength.

These were some of the ways through which you can increase the range of your Wi-Fi. You can also build a cheap Wi-Fi extender at your home. The method is provided Below.

How To Extend Wifi Range Outside Your House Building

Having problems working with the internet just when you are outside of your home or building? A weak wifi signal could be the primary issue for this. Most routers come with a limited wavelength, so getting access to bigger areas becomes difficult on such choices. This is why it is more important to choose a wifi Extender that will help you to get better coverage. If you are confused about extending the wifi network, here is a complete guide that you can follow.
