Why Is Knowing Your Internet Speed Important
Theres more to internet speed than the mere inconvenience or convenience caused by it. You, of course, want to know how fast your internet is or how poor it is. Your internet speed decides what kind of activities you can do over the internet without any interruption.
For example, sometimes your internet speed is too slow to watch a youtube video. Your Internet speed also determines how many devices can be connected to the same connection at once without causing an issue.
You need a minimum of 5Mbps speed to watch an HD quality video, given that only one device is connected to the internet connection. Most importantly, when you choose a certain Internet Provider because they promise a certain quality and speed of the internet.
To top that, we try to purchase the most effective plans, which may cost a little more than usual plans. If you put so much effort and money into the comfort of good internet, then its important to know if the current internet is working for you.
Sometimes it is the compatibility of your device or location that may be causing the internet issues. In that case, you need to find the connection that is suitable for you.

Everything You Need To Test Your Wifi
WiFi technology has evolved over the years. Each generation keeps getting faster and more robust. WiFi 6 and WiFi 6E are now faster than ever. WiFi 5, on the other hand, was always slower than the cable internet.
Testing your WiFi is different from testing your internet. Visiting a website or an app to let its software calculate the speed of your WiFi network isnt the most accurate way.
Therefore the best way to test your WiFi speed is by transferring data from one computer to another on a shared network. It may sound complicated, but it definitely isnt. Let the steps mentioned below guide you.
So heres all you need to test your WiFi Speed-
How Can I Test Wi
If you dont have an Android phone or you specifically want to test your laptops Wi-Fi speed, then type Control Panel into the Windows 10 search bar.
Double-click on the Wi-Fi connection from the list and in the window which opens youll see a field called Speed. The figure next to this will fluctuate, but should be a good indicator of how fast the connection is to your router.
For a more precise test, have a second laptop or PC connected to your router with a network cable and copy a file from your laptop to the PC, timing how long it takes. You’ll need to enable sharing in order to ‘see’ the other PC or laptop from the laptop you want to test. This is under Network and Sharing Center > Advanced sharing settings.
I typically use a 500MB video file to test with, and if you want to be more scientific then rather than use Windows File Explorer to copy the file, use a command prompt and the xcopy command.
Now use the exact file size in MB and divide it by the number of seconds that the file took to copy and you have your Wi-Fi speed in MB/s. Multiply it by eight to get the figure in megabits per second.
For example: 500 ÷ 24 = 20.83 MB/s. 20.83 x 8 = 166.7Mb/s.

How Do You Test And Read Your Internet Speed
You can test your Internet speed and review the results by utilizing a variety of websites, such as ours!
These sites make the process easy and simply require the click of a button! Once youve clicked the button, it will take a few moments for the test to be conducted. Once completed, you will be able to review your approximate Internet speed by reviewing both the upload and download speeds.
Internet speed is measured in Mbps, which stands for megabits per second. It is a measure of internet bandwidth, which is the download rate of your Internet connection.
Let’s Test The Internet Speed To Your Device
This test will measure the speed from secured third party test servers to this computer. Results are often lower than plan speeds due to Wifi conditions and device specific capabilities.
1. Use one device. Before you start the test, make sure that any other devices in your home that are connected to the Internet, like an iPad, Xbox, or a Smart TV are turned off. Testing your speed while using other devices simultaneously may impact the accuracy of the results.
2. Connect directly to your modem. For the best test result, make sure your computer is connected directly to your modem, rather than your router. Accessing the Internet on a wireless device via a router may impact the speed of your connection.
3. Stay up-to-date. If you have a computer running an older version of a Windows or Mac operating system, this may impact your test results. You may want to consider updating.

Additional Options For Finding The Speed Of Your Wi
While getting to the Wi-Fi speed isn’t difficult on either a Windows or Mac computer, it still might be more involved than you care to attempt. If so, that’s okay, because there are tons of services available that will measure your Wi-Fi speed for you. For example, on that’s both popular and safe is Speedtest by Ookla.
To use the service, just go to the website in your favorite browser and then click Go.It will take a couple of minutes for the test to complete, but the service tests Ping, Upload, and Download speeds.
One word of caution when using a website to test your internet speed some sites are not as trustworthy as others. If you’re going to use a website to test your Wi-Fi speed, be sure it’s a site that you can trust.
What Is Download Speed
The speed at which your device can receive data from the internet. It’s calculated by dividing the total throughput of data in a given time frame by its duration. Therefore its unit is denoted by units of data over time. Most often, download speed is denoted in Megabits per second , although other forms like Kilobits per second or Megabyte per second are also common.

How Can I Increase My Wifi Speed
Luckily, there are several ways in which you can improve your WiFi speed test results. Here are some options:
What About On My Phone
If you have a smartphone, you probably also pay for high-speed 4G LTE. You can or iPhone to run a similar test.
Unfortunately, since wireless data varies drastically on where you are when you test it, and how strong your signal is with a nearby tower, you can’t really just call and have your modem reset as you would with home internet.
Still, you can get a good idea of how your speed compares with your home internet, and where you get the best coverage. If you consistently see slow speeds at home, maybe it’s time to find a new wireless provider.
Once You Have The Results
If your results leave something to be desired, there are a few steps you can take before contacting your ISP, upgrading your router, or adding a range extender.
- First, re-set and re-test the router to make sure the low speeds weren’t just a tech hiccup.
- Then try moving your router to an open area in the middle of your home or office, keeping it away from competing electronics, cordless devices, metal, and concrete.
- If you have a dual-band router, use its included software to change some of your bandwidth-intensive devices from a 2.4GHz frequency to a 5GHz frequency, where you’ll face less Wi-Fi congestion.
- Lastly, make sure your modem isnt from 1999!
As a final measure, you can always plug your PC or laptop directly into your modem with an Ethernet cable and bypass your wireless router altogether. This will determine if your sluggish speeds could be the fault of your Internet service provider or your Wi-Fi devices. If the problem comes from your router, you may need to consider upgrading to one that supports the latest Wi-Fi standard, which is 802.11ac. And if you have a busy household with lots of devices, ensure that your new Wi-Fi router supports MU-MIMOthe ability for multiple devices to stream simultaneously versus having to wait their turn like on non-MU-MIMO capable routers.
How Do I Interpret My Wifi Speed Test Results
There are many reasons as to why you should be regularly testing your WiFi speed at home and, not for just the obvious instances where you find your WiFi signal strength is weaker than normal. Testing speed on a regular basis allows you to pinpoint performance trends, isolate which devices may be causing issues for your wireless network, and ensure no one is stealing your bandwidth. But, now that you’ve tested your WiFi speed, how do you interpret your WiFi speed test results?

What Is Ping And How Does It Relate To Internet Speed
Ping is a computer network administration software utility used to test the reachability of a host on an Internet Protocol network. The higher your connection speed is, the quicker you can send and receive data which results in a lower ping. A ping rate of over 150 milliseconds will cause lagging which will cause lower quality game play, graphics, and can affect things like streaming to Twitch, the leading live streaming platform for gamers. Regarding ping rate, 150 ms is decent and a ping rate of under 50 ms is ideal for professional gamers.

How To Check Wifi Speed
There are so many websites and software available to test your internet. To name a few of them Speed test by Ookla, Speedtest.net, Fast.com, Project Stream, etc. The most commonly used is Speedtest.net.
You should pick the one that works the best in your country or region. Make sure that the website itself is dynamic and does not have any issues. Theres no better or best website here amongst many. The key is to stick to one of them and compare your speed from time to time.
All you need to do is connect your PC to the internet and follow all the requirements discussed earlier. Once you are connected, you just need to navigate yourself to the test button and start the test.
It will first calculate your download speed, and then it will calculate your upload speed. Once done, both the speeds will be reflected on your screen separately. Please note that your internet speed will always vary because its never constant.
It will also vary depending on the location you are in or weather conditions. But if you find out that even in ideal conditions, your internet speed is constantly lower than promised by the Internet Provider, then dont hesitate to raise the issue. If your Internet Provider can resolve it, you can continue using it, but if they can, then its time to change your operator or Internet Provider. Now that you know how to test your internet, its time to test the data speed of your WiFi. It is not going to be as easy as testing your Internet.
