QUICK FIX WIFI ROUTER ISSUES – HOW TO

Ransomware messages are a good sign that you have a hacked router. These attackers can seize control of the router and demand money in return for its release. The message may appear in the form of an email, instant message, text, or a popup generated by uninvited software installed on your device.

Immediate action:Reset your router and dont pay a dime. Be sure that you create a unique password that hackers cant guess.

Pro tip:

Phishing is another email-based way to hack into your router. The message could appear to originate from your internet provider stating that a hacker compromised your router and that you should click the supplied link to resolve the issue. The resulting webpage could then log in to the router using the default credentials if you never changed them. Never click links in emails from unknown sources.

Problems With Consumer Routers

Routers are the essential but unheralded workhorses of modern computer networking. Yet few home users realize routers are in fact full-fledged computers, with their own operating systems, software and vulnerabilities.

“A compromised router can spy on you,” Horowitz said, explaining that a router under an attacker’s control can stage a man-in-the-middle attack, alter unencrypted data or send the user to “evil twin” websites masquerading as often-used webmail or online-banking portals.

Many consumer-grade home-gateway devices fail to notify users if and when firmware updates become available, even though those updates are essential to patch security holes, Horowitz noted. Some other devices will not accept passwords longer than 16 characters the minimum length for password safety today.

How To Find Your Router Login Information

To reset your router, youre going to need to access the settings page for the router. This requires you to enter the username and password for your router.

By default, most routers use admin for both username and password fields. You can try these first and see if they work.

If the above logins dont work, you need to consult your routers manual and see what the default login credentials are. You can also find the default login credentials for most routers online.

Log In To Your Router And Change Your Admin Credentials

Now that youve returned your router to its factory default settings, you can log in with its default username and password. Youll find that information on the router itself, in your user manual, or on the manufacturers website.

After youve logged in, change the admin password to one of your own choosing. That will prevent the hacker from logging back in.

Recap: How Do You Restart Your Wi

Restarting your modem and router is as easy as unplugging all your equipment, waiting a couple of minutes, then plugging in your modem and plugging in your router after your modem has powered back up.

We also recommend updating your equipments firmware and apps to make sure you have the latest technical issue fixes and optimizations. Updated firmware can help you get faster internet speeds, and who could say no to that?

Log Into Your Router Settings

You can access your routers settings by navigating to a specific address. Its the same as your Default Gateway, but if you cant find it, you can look it up online by searching for the manufacturers name and the words router address.

Sign in with your username and password. If you dont know them, theyre probably the default for the router model.

  • Reset the router to factory default. If youre having issues with your router, this step can save you a lot of time and energy. It wipes out all your custom settings and replaces them with those applied when you first got the router. Instead of digging into your settings and teasing out which one is creating the problem, just reset it and wipe away any problematic settings.
  • Update your firmware once the router is reset. The location of each router setting will vary depending on the model youre using, but each of them should have this as an option. It will upgrade your router to the most recent hardware as long as an update is available.
  • Follow the steps from the beginning of the article to reset the router and modem. Once youre done, rerun the tests to see whether the connection works.
  • Check your Wi-Fi channel if youre able to connect, but its slow or sluggish. The procedure will vary depending on your router but look for a place to change your wireless channel settings. Start with channel 1 and run a test to determine the speed and ping. Continue until you find your best possible connection.

Change the settings for the administrative Web interface, if your router permits it. Ideally, the interface should enforce a secure HTTPS connection over a non-standard port, so that the URL for administrative access would be something like, to use Horowitz’s example, “https://192.168.1.1:82” instead of the more standard “http://192.168.1.1”, which by default uses the internet-standard port 80.Use a browser’s incognito or private mode when accessing the administrative interface so that the new URL you set in the above step is not saved in the browser history.

Disable PING, Telnet, SSH, UPnP and HNAP, if possible. All of these are remote-access protocols. Instead of setting their relevant ports to “closed,” set them to “stealth” so that no response is given to unsolicited external communications that may come from attackers probing your network.

“Every single router has an option not to respond to PING commands,” Horowitz said. “It’s absolutely something you want to turn on a great security feature. It helps you hide. Of course, you’re not going to hide from your ISP, but you’re going to hide from some guy in Russia or China.”

Change the router’s Domain Name System server from the ISP’s own server to one maintained by OpenDNS , Google Public DNS or Cloudflare .

Use a virtual private network router to supplement or replace your existing router and encrypt all your network traffic.

    4) Restart your computer and connect to your WiFi again to see if it works.

Fix: Router Is Not Connecting To Internet

When your router doesnt connect to your Internet, it makes it impossible to use the devices that rely on it for the connection. Though you can connect a PC directly to the modem in most cases, that doesnt provide Internet access for the rest of the devices in your house.

Who Else Is Using The Internet

It’s possible that everything is working properly, but a program on your PCor someone else in the houseis using up all your bandwidth. On Windows, open up the Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc and click on the Network column to sort by network usage. On a Mac, press Command + Space to open Spotlight, type “Activity Monitor,” and head to Activity Monitor’s Network tab.

If a certain app is using a lot of bandwidthlike if you’re downloading a big fileyou may just need to wait until that process is finished, or cancel it to get your internet snappy again. If you don’t see any obvious culprits, see if someone else in the house is downloading a large file on their machine, and tell them to knock it off. If someone is using a game streaming service, don’t let them hog all the bandwidth on the network.

    Get A Specialized Router

Just got faster internet but wifi router still gives slow old speed ...

If your home is simply too big for your router to handle or has an overabundance of dead zones, you might want to invest in a different kind of router. Long-range routers allow you to cover a much larger area with a single router. There are also Wi-Fi extenders and mesh routers that can allow you to both cover a large area and transmit your signal around obstacles.

Router Crashes Regularly And Only Restarting It Helps

If your router needs to be restarted regularly, consider giving it a full reset. On most routers, youll find a Reset button that you can hold down with a paperclip. Do so for 30 seconds, and the router should default from factory settings. Use our guide to setting up a wireless router to get everything properly configured.

If that doesnt work, your router may be on its way out. Your only real option is to return it if it is within its warranty period or to buy a new one.

    You Cant Control Your Device

If youre sitting in front of your computer watching an uninvited, unseen guest move the mouse and access your banking information, you definitely have a hacked router.

In this scenario, the hacker has remote access to your device and can open any file or online account using the passwords you store in the operating system or browser.

Immediate action: Unplug your devices and disconnect your router from your modem. After that, reset your router.

    Choose The Right Band

Wi-Fi bands are not created equal. If you have a newer router, check to see if it supports the 5GHz band. Newer N or AC routers typically support this band. Unlike B/G routers that only transmit on the crowded 2.4GHz spectrum, N and AC routers could transmit on 5GHz as well.

Newer routers usually have dual-band capability. By enabling dual bands, you could keep older devices that only support the slower G specification on the 2.4GHz band and newer devices on the beefier and speedier 5GHz band. This is essentially like having two routers in one.

How to configure and fix your wifi router and modem

If you can’t connect to the internet at all, take a look at your modem and router. Both should have a few LED status indicatorsif none of them are lit up, then the modem or router is probably unplugged or powered down. Disconnect the power cordif you have both a modem and a router, disconnect boththen reconnect the modem after a minute or two.

Make sure that the power switch is in the On position, if there is one. Once its lights are on, plug in your router and wait for it to boot up as well. If you still don’t see lights after plugging them in, you may have a failed power adapter, a faulty power strip, or a fried router.

If some of the lights are on, but some aren’tor they’re flashing repeatedlyyou’ll want to look more closely at what they’re telling you. For example, if your modem’s lights are flashing rather than solid, it may be unable to find an internet connection, necessitating a new modem .

If your router’s network light is on but the Wi-Fi lights aren’t, you may need to press the Wi-Fi button on the side, or re-enable Wi-Fi from its configuration menu. Check the documentation for your modem and/or router to diagnose what these lights are telling you.

Wifi Is Secure Except When It Isn’t

All modern WiFi routers provide a variety of encryption choices that are used to make traffic unintelligible to anyone trying to sniff Wi-Fi packets out of the air. At a basic level all forms of encryption work, but some work better than others, and routers are lamentably silent when it comes to providing advice. Many routers list the oldest and least secure option, WEP, at the top of the list so users often select it.

How can you fix it? The best WiFi encryption option is WPA2. You’ll probably have this choice unless your router is more than eight years old. Though not invincible, it’s unlikely anyone will go to the bother of cracking your WPA2 secured network. You should make sure to pick a long and highly random password, too, since this will make a brute-force attack against your network much more difficult.

You also should disable WPA2-PSK if given the option. This form of encryption has been cracked, and can by-passed with relatively simple tools within a few minutes, no real hacking required. See our article on changing your Wi-Fi password for more details.
