How To Get Better Wifi At Home

Which Router Is Best For You

How to get better WiFi at home

These days, youll find two types of wireless routers: traditional models and mesh network models. Youre probably familiar with the former. Theyre single-unit devices that plug into a modem. They can be plenty fast, supporting even the data-hungry activities of families with dozens of internet-connected devices. But they dont always have the range to effectively blanket a whole home in WiFi, especially if you have a large or obstacle-laden layout.

Mesh routers are typically packaged in a set with multiple unitsa hub and one or more satellitesthat work together to spread WiFi into the far-flung corners of a home. If you place the hub, which plugs into your modem, near the center of your dwelling, you can shift around the satellites, which help relay the WiFi signal, until you find a configuration that helps you eliminate any dead spots.

So why doesnt everyone simply choose a mesh router? Theyre pricey, for one thing. The top-rated models in our ratings cost $400 to $500. By contrast, our top-rated single-unit model sells for $200, followed by one that goes for about $160. Theres also an argument to be made for simplicity. With a mesh system, you have several devices strewn about your home vs. just one with a traditional router. If you dont actually need mesh routers, theres no reason to invest in them.

How To Boost Your Home Wifi Signal

If youre struggling to get reliable WiFi in your garage, there are a number of solutions available to fix the issue.

There are many variables involved with why or why not a particular home gets effective WiFi coverage.

For example, you might have your router or WiFi extender in the perfect spot and have a fast internet connection. Despite this, you may experience poor WiFi coverage in some areas of your home due to physical obstructions like walls or floors that are particularly thick.

Maybe you have uncommonly thin walls and your WiFi signal is weak due to your networking devices being very old, or because theyre located in a less-than-ideal location.

Here are several solutions to make your garage and home more network-friendly so you can experience reliable WiFi connectivity for your mobile devices and smart home products.

Update Your Routers Firmware

Your router is a small computer dedicated to network management and traffic routing. Like any computing device, it requires an operating systemin this case, firmware. Since no software is entirely perfect, developers release updates that optimize the code, stomp out pesky bugs, and fill security gaps.

Keeping the firmware current is a major priority for performance and security. Many newer routers have automatic firmware updates, but checking the firmware version can give you better peace of mind. Log in to your router and verify that automatic updates are toggled on. If not, update your routers firmware immediately and then switch on automatic updates.

Solution #: Install A Home Mesh Network

Adding a mesh network is another way to improve the WiFi coverage in your home.

Its similar to a WiFi extender in that it takes your routers WiFi signal and sends it to additional strategically placed hardware devices to expand your signal range.

Unlike most WiFi extenders, however, a mesh network is less prone to certain performance issues. For example, they provide faster network speeds. Mesh networks are also far more reliable in delivering a consistent WiFi connection when youre using mobile devices while roaming about your home.

Performance benefits arent the only reason mesh networks have increased in popularity with homeowners in recent years.

Aesthetics have also played a part. Mesh network hardware has a more modern, stylish look than traditional network hardware devices like WiFi extenders and routers. Theyre also smaller and less conspicuous.

Upgrade To Faster Internet

While we hope these tips will do the trick for you, sometimes your internet connection is simply too slow to sustain your internet consumption. If thats the case, youll need to upgrade to a faster internet plan to get better speeds.

Unsure what internet speeds you need to support your online habits? Check out our guides to internet speed for online gaming and video streaming requirements.

And if youre confused because youre sure youve paid for enough internet speed but your connection still doesnt cut it, that might be because your internet connection doesnt always perform at 100%.

Internet providers advertise speeds up to a certain speedthey dont promise that you will always get those speeds. So even if you have a 100 Mbps plan, you might not always get that much bandwidth. In that case, you might need a bit of a buffer or a plan thats actually faster than you think you would need. That way, network slowdowns will still happen, but youll probably notice them less.

Upgrade Your Wifi Routers Firmware

Firmware is software that makes your devices work the way the manufacturer intended them to. Some devices, such as routers, need to have their firmware upgraded periodically to make sure they are functioning to the best of their ability. To make sure your router has the most up-to-date firmware installed, you should consult your user documentation, the router manufacturer or your internet provider. You might need to download a firmware file from your routers support page or push a firmware upgrade button on your router. Upgrading router firmware should be done fairly regularly to improve your WiFi signal whether you are having problems or not.

Move To A Mesh Router System

How to get better WiFi at home

In the event you cant get your router to play nice and a range extender isnt cutting it, you may be in the market for a mesh router system. These have become quite popular over the last few years with networking veterans like Netgear and Linksys diving in. There are also newcomers to networking like Google, Eero, and Luma with mesh Wi-Fi systems.

A mesh network consists of multiple access points that can be managed as a single unit. They use a little network capacity to maintain the connection between APs, but you get vastly better coverage if you spread them around the house. Your devices will be connected to the AP with the best connection as you move around, too.

Our sister site PCMag gives strong recommendations to both the Netgear Orbi and Linksys Velop. Those are both around $400 for the base-level bundle. is reviewed well also, and its $100 less expensive.

03 Upgrade To 9dbi Omni Antennas

Upgrading your routers antenna is another way of boosting your wifi speed and coverage. Most stock antennas that come with the router are 5dBi, some 2dBi. If your existing router comes with 2 or 3 antennas holders, it is a good idea to upgrade all of them. The approximate range for a 9dBi is 140m. For more info 12 Wireless Router Antenna Distance Coverage Comparison.

As shown in the image above, the stock router given free by my internet provider vs the Asus router with 9dBi antennas. The difference? My personal experience is a more stable internet connection, faster and most important of all stable connection. Prior to that, the packet loss is so high that browsing the internet means refreshing the web pages often. A 9 dBi antenna is not really that expensive, approximately USD7 per stick. Always purchase branded antennas, such as TP-Link, D-Link, Asus, Cisco or NetGear. Avoid cheap non-branded antennas .

See If There Are Apps Hogging Your Bandwidth

Different applications use different amounts of bandwidth, and if youve got multiple apps running that are bandwidth hogs, overall performance is going to suffer.

Most routers come with something called Quality of Service tools that can help you limit the amount of bandwidth different apps use. You can use these tools to prioritize certain apps over others. For example, if you want to make sure your streaming of the big game isnt interrupted because your kids are playing games online you would assign a higher priority to your streaming service than their devices browser.

What Is A Wifi Booster & Range Extender

  • Wifi boosters and range extenders are essentially the same thing. They pair up with your modem router and pick up its existing wifi connection to send and receive signals further.
  • The initial set up requires you plugging it into a socket close to your modem router and syncing them to one another. Then you’re free to move it to a socket further afield.
  • It’s worth noting that modem routers come with different speeds, they’ll either have ‘AX’ then a number, or ‘AC’ then a number. The higher the number, the faster it is.
  • Wifi boosters and range extenders can only send out a signal thats the strength of your modem router. So, if its strength is N300, it weakens as the wifi booster shares the power between the original router and the devices thats connecting to it.
  • Just to be super clear, a wifi booster or range extender doesn’t make your wifi more powerful. Their actual purpose is to push the wifi further out , so you have extra range.

Tip #: Invest In A New Router

Five free ways to improve your home WIFI

At the end of the day, few methods work better at boosting poor signal strength and range for wireless networks than investing in better hardware. If your wireless router is cheap or out of date, theres a good chance many of the above methods may not work or may work to a very limited degree.

Issues with old routers:

Old routers typically use less efficient technology and may even develop technical issues, such as overheating problems, that result in poor signal strength. Meanwhile, cheaper wireless routers simply dont have come packed with the technology to perform well in the long run, and generally, lack the power output for better range.

Think of this as a last-ditch effort. Nevertheless, upgrading an old wireless router eventually becomes a necessity as wireless standards change and technology becomes better equipped to handle more receiving devices.

Pick Up A Range Extender

If your router cant handle the job no matter what you do, it may be time to get it some help. A range extender or repeater can expand your network coverage without the expense of getting a whole new router. There are systems that run your network over power lines to output Wi-Fi where you need it, and others that simply pick up the Wi-Fi signal and transmits a boosted signal for your devices to connect to.

One major drawback of range extenders is they can be tricky to set up. Settings changes to your router can also mean you have to completely redo the setup process.
