How To Get Better Wifi

Find The Best Spot For Your Router

How to INSTANTLY Make Your WiFi Speed Faster

The next thing to consider when youre trying to optimize your Wi-Fi signal is where you place your router. In general, the farther your router is from the devices connected to its signal, the weaker that signal is going to be.

Ideally, you want to place your router in a central location in your home so youre never too far from it even if youre moving about with your mobile devices. If you use Wi-Fi primarily for streaming to televisions in your home, youll benefit from the router being closer to those TVs.

Other things that can help are making sure the router is elevated and that its not surrounded by other electronic devices.

Keep Your Router Updated

If you follow the news, youve heard about the growing number of large-scale malware attacks that are costing businesses and individuals alike billions every year. Many of these attacks wouldnt be possible if all routers were kept updated. Once a malware infects a router, it can steal bandwidth and spread itself across the network to other devices.

But even without a presence of a dangerous malware, routers with old firmware perform worse than routers that are properly updated.

To check if your router is running the newest firmware available:

  • Launch a web browser on your computer or mobile device and connect to your routers network.
  • Enter the IP address of the router into the web browser.
  • If you dont know what the IP address is, check if there is an information sticker somewhere on the router.
  • Log in with admin username and password.
  • Again, if you dont know what the right admin password is, look at the information sticker on the bottom or back of your router.
  • Select an option called Firmware Update or Router Update.
  • Because there are many different routers, you may need to do some digging and detective work to find the right option.
  • Wait until your router finds and installs the latest firmware.
  • Never interrupt the update. If it takes a long time and your router appears to be unresponsive, give it a few more minutes before you disconnect the router from power and turn it on again.
  • Experiment With Router Location

It’s not only about finding the best router settings for fast internet. You also need to consider where you’re placing your router in your home.

Because the router competes with every other 2.4GHz and/or 5GHz device in your area, subtle movements often make a world of difference. Additionally, the building material of your house might interfere with the wireless signal. For example, solid concrete walls are notoriously hard for a Wi-Fi connection to pass through.

    Automate A Reboot Schedule

Most newer routers don’t need to be rebooted regularly. But as most people know, if you’ve ever run into a dead internet connection, rebooting your router is often all it takes to get you back up and running.

However, if you find yourself rebooting the router regularly, the DD-WRT and Tomato firmware options both have timed reboot options. Set it to reboot once a day while you’re sleeping, and you’ll never even notice the downtime while the router powers off and starts back up.

    Extend Your Wifi Range

How to get Better WiFi Signal?

Get a Wireless Range Extender. Some of these are expensive BUT there are also software programs that can use your computer as a hotspot to help extend your signal. The biggest thing you need to watch out for when choosing one, though, is to make sure it runs on the same signal type as your router.

Optimize the Frequency Band: Depending on the frequency band your router is operating off of, you may get interference from other sources that are operating on the same frequency. Dual-band routers should be set to the 5GHz since most routers are operating off of a single band and fewer sources will be set to this. Fewer people operating on a band means less interference and greater wifi range.

    Buy A Wifi Repeater/ Booster/ Extender

Even though they are referred to by many names, WiFi boosters, repeaters, and extenders are basically the same thing.

WiFi repeaters are relatively simple devices that take an existing signal from your WiFi router and rebroadcast it as a new network. This new network is just an extension of your main network, and all data that go through it also go through the main network.

WiFi boosters and extenders are very similar, but they also amplify the existing signal before rebroadcasting it to create a second network. Because WiFi boosters typically have greater range than WiFi repeaters, they make sense in situations where the original signal is very weak.

A good repeater or booster costs less than $100, and it can be installed in a few minutes by anyone since the installation process usually involves only the press of the WPS button. You can find a list of the top 5 WiFi boosters at the end of this article.

To achieve the best performance when using a WiFi repeater or booster, its a good idea to use a WiFi booster app to analyze existing WiFi coverage and determine the optimal way how to extend the existing WiFi network.

Choose The Most Appropriate Network Type

Wireless technology has been reinvented several times over the years. The most recent revision, which is just rolling out now, is known as Wi-Fi 6. This is still quite rare, and its more likely that your router supports one of two previous versions: Wi-Fi 4 or Wi-Fi 5.

The latter of these Wi-Fi 5 only uses whats known as the 5GHz band. You can imagine this as being similar to FM on a regular radio. Its predecessor Wi-Fi 4 uses both 5GHz and the older 2.4GHz band, the latter of which you can think of as being similar to AM or medium wave radio.

Just like FM radio, 5GHz networks can transmit a faster signal, so handle more data in any given period. That means theyre ideal for any activity, like video conferencing or streaming TV, that relies on a lot of data being transmitted and received on a constant basis. However, 5GHz signals are quite fragile, just like FM broadcasts, so they dont travel as far through your home, and can be further degraded when they encounter walls and other obstructions. Wi-Fi 5 routers only support 5GHz networks so, if you have one of these, check out our advice on whole home Wi-Fi and range extenders below.

How To Choose A New Router

For long-time customers, some ISPs might offer a free router that supports a newer WiFi standard than your original box, or if youre signing up for a new contract, you could be eligible for a high-speed router too. Otherwise, established brands such as Linksys, Netgear and TP-Link are good bets for upgrading your router.

Router model names always include something like AC1900 thats an indication of its theoretical bandwidth and the WiFi standard it uses .

For many people, AC1900 routers will hit the sweet spot of price and performance. They are more than capable of delivering the faster speeds required for multi-user households or streaming-heavy users but dont have as many high-bandwidth channels as high-end routers do. However, theyre more expensive than AC1200 routers, say, which are likely to be sufficient for a household with only a couple devices using data-intensive apps like streaming.

For WiFi 5, a great value option is the Linksys AC1200 with its Smart WiFi app for prioritizing media. For a full-featured WiFi 6 router with smart frequency and channel selection as well as built-in anti-malware and parental controls, we like the TP-Link Archer AX6000 , and for larger homes, the Netgear Nighthawk AX8 . For WiFi 6E, we recommend the Netgear Nighthawk AXE1100 .

Note: Before upgrading to a WiFi 6 router, be aware that to take advantage of the higher speeds, your devices need to support WiFi 6.

Check Your Home Internet Speed For Free By Running A Speed Test Online

How To get BETTER WiFi Wireless Signal

A good place to start is to check your internets speed and performance at Its quick and easy, and you can run a test from your computer or smartphone via their app.

When troubleshooting slow internet, its important to determine whether the problem is actually the WiFi, or the amount of bandwidth coming into your home. To suss it out, do a wired test first by plugging your test computer directly into your modem using an ethernet cable. Try to minimize interference by temporarily shutting down nearby devices and closing out programs or applications running on your computer.

A speed test will show you your connections upload and download speeds as measured in megabits per second . If you run multiple tests, keep in mind the test shows you your speed in real time, so its normal to see fluctuations.
