How To Get Faster Wifi Speed

Disconnect Other Connected Devices From Your Network

How to INSTANTLY Make Your WiFi Speed Faster

Disconnecting other wireless devices such as home security and smart home devices from your network has the obvious benefit that they arent taking any of your precious bandwidth. Its also easy to do by simply turning the device off, turning the WiFi connection on your device off entirely or connecting to a different network.

However, there is a secondary benefit to this. Every device connected has to send data to the router to stay on the network. This data can interfere with yours and degrade your signal quality, especially if youre far away from the router. So, by disconnecting other devices, youll decrease the time spent resending data and increase your effective speeds.

If you don’t have a flat surface near the best spot, you can mount your router halfway up a wall. If possible, keep it away from other devices that use electromagnetic waves that includes baby monitors, wireless keyboards, and even microwaves.

How To Get Faster Internet At Home For Free

Knowing how to get faster internet at home for free could be the difference between a happy connected household and a frustrating online experience. That’s especially true now that the best streaming services and the best video chat apps are an essential part of modern life these things can use a lot of bandwidth and buffering is never much fun.

White House has recently unveiled cheaper internet for millions, so you can check if you’re eligible for that.

But, while the easiest way to boost your internet speed may be to invest in new equipment, such as one of the best Wi-Fi routers, there are several tricks that could give you a faster connection without the need to splash the cash.

Though these methods arent 100% guaranteed to increase your internet speed, theyre certainly worth a try plus, theyre the perfect rainy-day project. So, huge cup of coffee at the ready, heres how to get faster internet at home for free.

Test Or Replace Your Modem Or Router

How to INSTANTLY Make Your WiFi Speed Faster

If you want to connect multiple devices to your homes internet, you need to connect a router to your modem. A router not only allows you to connect multiple devices, but it also acts as an antenna to extend the range of the Wi-Fi throughout your home.

The modem you have is typically provided by your service provider. Sometimes the fix can be as simple as restarting your modem. If your download speed has been significantly slow and you saw no change in speed after restarting, it may be time for a new modem.

The best way to check your modems signal strength is to put your device close to it. If your speed increases when you are directly next to the modem, this is a good sign, in which case your router may be the issue. As mentioned, the router allows you to extend your connectivity range. If your device is too far away from the router, this could be impacting your download speed.

Update Your Routers Firmware

Your router is a small computer dedicated to network management and traffic routing. Like any computing device, it requires an operating systemin this case, firmware. Since no software is entirely perfect, developers release updates that optimize the code, stomp out pesky bugs, and fill security gaps.

Keeping the firmware current is a major priority for performance and security. Many newer routers have automatic firmware updates, but checking the firmware version can give you better peace of mind. Log in to your router and verify that automatic updates are toggled on. If not, update your routers firmware immediately and then switch on automatic updates.

Use The Best Frequency

Most routers offer two Wi-Fi frequencies, or bands: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. The former is slower, but has a strong signal, so you can typically connect to it from further away, even if there are walls in the way. The latter is weaker but offers far higher speeds.

Which one you connect to can therefore have a big impact on your internet speed. Most modern devices including all of the best phones will be able to connect to either band, so most of the time you’ll want it to connect to the 5 GHz option.

First, you’ll need to check that your router is configured to offer 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz as separate network connections, as some routers combine them into one that’s simpler, but doesn’t offer the best speed in most cases.

To figure this out, simply search for your Wi-Fi network on your phone or computer. If you see there are two available Wi-Fi connections with the same name, but with 2.4 GHz/5 GHz at the end of the name, then you’re good to go. If this is the case, it’s recommended to connect to the 5 GHz one at all times, and to remove the 2.4 GHz one from your “remembered” networks. If you’re far away from your router and the signal is bad, you can always swap over to the 2.4 GHz one instead.

Tip #16 Change Your Internet Plan Or Isp

Weve left this tip for last, since its the one thats the biggest hassle.

If nothing else is working to improve your internet speed, you should consider changing your internet plan or your ISP.

Try talking to your provider about your speed issues. As well as helping you to troubleshoot, they may be able to recommend a better plan for your needs.

Downside is it will probably cost you more. Make sure to read up on reviews to see what other customers have experienced.

Lastly If your internet provider is going to give you a slow connection no matter how many other tips you try, consider a swap to another ISP servicing your area.

When Is It Time To Call Your Service Provider

If youre satisfied that slow Internet speeds arent your fault, and the speed youre getting is considerably lower than what youre paying for, its time to speak to your ISP. Similarly, if you suspect youre being throttled, you should also raise the issue with them.

Let your ISP know youre unhappy with the level of service youre receiving. If they arent receptive, threatening to leave might persuade them to fix the issue. However, if you dont get anywhere and have the option of choosing another provider, consider making the switch.

If you’re a long-time customer, it’s also worth asking your internet service provider for a speed upgrade.

Many ISPs will offer faster broadband speeds to new customers as a way to get them to join the service while existing users are left on whatever they signed up for, or worse still have their bills raised each year without getting any speed.

Take a look at what speeds your ISP now offers, and whether they’re offering new customers faster connections than what you get for the same money . And also shop around to see what you could get elsewhere.

Next, call your ISP and ask if they could upgrade you the merest hint that you might take your custom elsewhere can sometimes be enough to magically gain you an upgrade. Just be aware that depending on your contract period and terms and conditions, you may not be able to leave without paying some kind of cancellation fee. How To Make Hotspot Faster On An Iphone

There are limited solutions to make hotspots faster for iPhone users. You can turn on the Maximize Compatibility feature to choose between the frequencies, i.e., 2.4 GHz and 5.0 GHz. Unfortunately, this option is only available on iPhone 12 and above.

  • First, open Settings.
  • Go to Personal Hotspot.
  • At the bottom of the page, youll see the Maximize Compatibility option. Turn the toggle on.
  • Its helpful to remember that the iPhone runs on a 5.4GHz frequency by default. So, when you turn on this feature, you are opting for the more compatible but slower 2.4 GHz frequency.

If this method doesnt help, try connecting your phone directly to your laptop using a cable. This ensures a fast connection.
