Buy A Wireless Router
The first step to enabling Wi-Fi at home is to get a wireless router if you dont have one already.
In the old days, your broadband modem and your wireless router were always separate devices. Your ISP supplied the modem, and you headed down to the local electronics store to buy the router. But today, most ISPs offer a combination device that is both a modem and a wireless router.
At MATE we let you bring your own modem and wireless router, but if you prefer, you can add on our preconfigured nbn-ready modem for just $149. This modem has wireless capability built right in. The best part? Its preconfigured, meaning you can skip steps 2 through 4!
Government Discount Via The Affordable Connectivity Program
The Federal Communications Commission established the Affordable Connectivity Program as a replacement for the Emergency Broadband Benefit , a federal temporary assistance program that provided free or discounted internet service to qualified applicants through March 1, 2022.
The ACP offers a monthly discount of up to $30 for eligible subscribers and a one-time discount of up to $100 to buy a laptop.
Additionally, you can combine the ACP with federal Lifeline Assistance Program benefits to increase savings. Lifeline provides government discounts to qualified subscribers for cell phone, broadband internet, and bundled voice-broadband service.
You can apply for Lifeline using the Lifeline National Verifier. Once qualified, you can contact your current internet provider for direct ACP enrollment. With Lifeline approval, you are already qualified for the ACP. However, if you are not a Lifeline subscriber, you can still apply for the ACP.
You may be eligible for the ACP if you meet any of the following conditions:
- Your household income is at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines.
- You receive Tribal assistance such as Tribal Head Start.
- You qualify for Lifeline because you receive benefits like SNAP, Medicaid, or SSI.
- You receive WIC benefits.
ACP online or call the National Verifier at 1 511-0311.
There is one ACP per household. There is also one Lifeline benefit per household.
See If Your School District Offers Free Internet For Students
Some school districts that serve mostly low-income families may qualify for free internet access for their students to have at home.
Clarksdale, Mississippi, for example, is one district whose high school students get free web access at home, because the district serves several families in poverty.
The details regarding how schools get picked for such a wonderful benefit isnt very clear, but you can always request a meeting with your district superintendent to discuss a program like this for your own school.
There will likely be several hoops the district will need to go through since its a federally-backed program, but your help getting the ball rolling could benefit the future of all students who attend.
Plus, as a parent or guardian of a student, youll be able to access the internet for free too!

Internet Cost And The Digital Divide
Most people would jump at the opportunity to save money on any of their monthly bills, but internet access is an area where fair and affordable pricing is especially important. Especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, many day-to-day activities have moved to the internet. If your job depends on the internet, its not just a convenienceits a necessity.
This dependency on the internet has allowed many companies to engage in anticompetitive practices and has created a lack of competition among broadband providers.8 Even though the internet was developed in the United States and created with public funds, Americans pay higher bills and get lower speeds than people in many other countries.9, 10
In July 2021, President Biden issued an executive order instructing the FCC to address some of these issues by preventing ISPs from engaging in certain anticompetitive practices, making pricing more transparent, limiting excessive early termination fees, and restoring net neutrality.8 If implemented by the FCC, these measures could reduce the cost of internet access for many Americans.

In the United States, the average cost of a home internet connection is somewhere between $50-60 per month. Check With Your Service Providers For Free Internet
Most of internet service providers offer internet services at no cost, but they dont notify their subscribers. Some internet service providers have data plans which are discounted or are somehow cheaper. Such kind of data comes with higher browsing speeds, which are ideal for users. Before agreeing with any service provider ensure all your queries are all addressed, and you have explored the available options.
There are higher chances of getting free internet if you bundle services with the ISPs. Most of the leading internet service providers have started to bundle phone, TV services, as well as the internet to save customers money.
If you bundle more than one service, you will get more internet service at no cost valid for one year. If you opt for any of these services you will be able to save a lot. Upon the expiry of the free internet service, other offers are awaiting you.
Most companies will be happy to grant you other affordable offers rather than losing you to another different company.
Which Internet Service Providers Offer No
Many internet service providers have programs for helping low-income families. This number increased during the COVID-19 outbreak, when many more joined the FCCs Keep Americans Connected initiative, which asked companies to continue service, waive fees, and make their Wi-Fi hotspots publicly available. Although the FCCs initiative has ended, many ISPs still offer programs for those in need of low-cost and no-cost internet connections.

At Home: Get Free Internet
Getting free internet access in your home is a little trickier. If you live in a dense urban area, you may be able to connect to an open public Wi-Fi network and use that as your main internet access. It probably wont be as fast as a dedicated home internet connection, of course.
You could also try to share someone elses Wi-Fi. For example, if you have a good relationship with your neighbor, maybe theyd let you onto their Wi-Fi. Its possible.
You probably cant get your own free internet connection. If you have a landline phone, its still possible to use a free dial-up ISP like NetZero, which will give you 10 hours a month of browsing for free. But its packed with advertisements, will be very slow , and requires that landline phone bill. This is far from a good option.
Many ISPs offer subsidized low-income plans. Youll usually need to already qualify for a public assistance program to get this discounted pricing. For example, Comcast offers its Internet Essentials plan for $10 per month to those who qualify. Its not free, but these plans offer the cheapest home internet you can pay for. Similar subsidized plans may be available in other countries.
While these plans are intended for low-income families and individuals, you may be able to reduce your monthly internet bill by downgrading your plan to a lower speed tier or negotiating with your ISP. You may be able to save money by buying your cable modem and avoiding those monthly rental fees, too.
Do The Traditional Routes
When I say traditional, go to places where public, free internet access or services are still offered up to this day. Almost all establishments especiallybars, coffee shops, and restaurants offer free WiFi and connect you to it without a hassle. Check them out.
If you dont want to go there, you can always visit your nearby library . It offers free public WiFi, and you can also use computers there for free.
Going to these places is, sometimes, cheaper and more practical especially if you are the type of person who doesnt use the internet that much.

Connect The Modem To Your Router
As seen, modem goes hand in hand with a router. The purpose of a modem is to allow sharing of broadband internet between more than one device. Routers are packaged along with Ethernet cables to connect to the modem.
Using an Ethernet cable, plug one of its end to the back port in your modem, then plug the other end of the cable to the back port of your router.
Save Money Using Super Cheap Internet Services
Like most things, some internet services are much cheaper than others.
Theyll likely not offer top speeds like more expensive services, but theyll give you basic internet thatll be enough to check your email and access websites.
Access from AT& T is made especially for low-income citizens who need internet access.
The service is for 3 Mbps internet, which is very slow compared to most internet speeds, but its only $5 a month. You cant beat the price tag.
To qualify, at least one person in your home must be eligible to receive SNAP benefits.
Theres also Internet Essentials by Comcast, which is $9.95 per month and offers 10 Mbps. Its not super fast, but this speed is decent enough to let you get most normal web tasks done.
You can always check with your local internet providers to see what their cheapest services are, most of which are ones they rarely, if ever, advertise.

Get Free Internet At Home Using A Usb Cellular Modem
An alternative to the portable cellular router is a USB cellular modem. As the name suggests, it comes as a USB device with a jacket to hold a data-only SIM card. You can plug it into your laptop or computer directly to enjoy a green Internet connection.
Another good news is that your laptop or computer serves as a WiFi hotspot. Meaning, you can enable the option to share your data connection with other devices including Alexa, and tablets.
These USB modems are cheaper than portable routers because of the absence of battery and router hardware. On the downside, the USB cellular modem works only when connected to a laptop since it doesnt have a battery of its own.
See If Your School Offers Free Internet
A good idea would be to check and see if your school offers free internet some do specially to enable students from low-income groups to stay connected so as to enable them to research their papers, review their homework and streamline their performance as a result.
If you are planning to apply for the same, then you would have to apply to meet your district state commissioner and make your case, as to how you and your kids come from a low-income group.
There is no clarity on how families get picked for the same but one criterion is thought to be the income status of that particular family.
