Buy A Sim Card For Your Trip
Depending on the country you are travelling to, you might find the most cost effective way to get online when you travel is to purchase a SIM card for your device for the country you are travelling to.
You can either do this on arrival, or in some cases, you can buy the SIM card before you leave such as this option for travellers from the USA to Europe,
Once you have the SIM card in your phone, you can just use this for your data needs.
For this to work you need an unlocked handset â you can check with your carrier if your handset is unlocked, and they should be able to assist you with unlocking it if you are allowed to.
If your device is unlocked, then you will be able to put any SIM card that you like into it. This has the advantage that youâll be able to get the maximum speeds available in that country as the provider will be local, and youâll also generally be able to do things like tether other devices to your handset.
Tethering allows you to set up your phone as a WiFi hotspot, meaning you can connect your laptop to the internet through your device connection. See this guide for instructions on setting up a WiFi hotspot on Android, and this guide for how to do it on Apple iOS devices.
If you are travelling from the USA, you can pick up a Three SIM card in advance of your trip here, which comes preloaded with data.

Visit Locations That Offer Free Wi
A variety of community locations and businesses in your area may offer free Wi-Fi. Many businesses that offer coupons, special promotions, and loyalty programs may provide free Wi-Fi to consumers under specific circumstances.
These give visitors an added convenience and enable more consumers to take advantage of in-store internet features. Libraries, bookstores, public plazas, McDonalds and Starbucks franchises the chances are pretty high that youll encounter some free sources of internet access in your day-to-day routine.
This can be a boon to individuals with limited data plans. Understand, however, that your access to public networks may come with some restrictions. Certain websites may be blocked, and the connection speed may not be sufficient for intensive streaming or downloading.
There are also some security concerns with using public Wi-Fi. Unscrupulous individuals can intercept data being transmitted to and from devices connected to public networks, potentially allowing them to glean enough information to commit fraud. Unless youre using a virtual private network, its not advisable to access sensitive information while on a public network.
If you have concerns about mobile pay transmitting your credit card information over a public network, have no fear most mobile pay platforms use NFC technology, so your information is not being transmitted over any public networks.

Remember To Stay Safe And Secure On The Road
Along with being mindful of the roadway, keep in mind that someone in the next car over may have access to your mobile Wi-Fi connection. Use a VPN or treat your in-car Wi-Fi connection like a public Wi-Fi network. Avoid entering any sensitive information, such as passwords or banking info, while connected. Safe travels!
Hotspots + Cellular Service
Tethering your phone is an option but that can get costly. If you happen to still have unlimited data or a service that allows you to stream without using your data, we recommend you use that. IMO, hotspots are the way to go!
- The Verizon Jetpack with unlimited data changed our lives. We werent getting crazy fast speeds like we would with cable or DSL, but for the most part, we were getting at least 15 Mbps. This is still a pricey option, but if your livelihood is dependent on it, its the best option. If you want to step it up a level, some folks get Verizon and AT& T to help ensure coverage in more areas.
- Vinli is a device for the car that tracks your driving data, but it also gives you the option to buy T-Mobile service as you need it. This is a great option because its pay as you go. If youre on the lower end of how much data you use, this could be the most cost-friendly option for you. The downside is since T-Mobile doesnt get as much coverage, this only worked well in urban areas. This is when Esther would hop on to work while I drove.
*Side note: The current options on purchasing data is limited, but there are workarounds to leasing unlimited data accounts. Check out eBay or message us for details.

How To Have Internet On The Road For A Full
Im often asked what I do for a living. Many people assume I blog or earn money online like many RV Entrepreneurs do. Or perhaps have some sort of sponsorship. Instead, I have a normal corporate, 9-5 job!
I started working in an office cubicle over 7 years ago for a large insurance company. At that time, it took three years to earn the ability to transfer to a remote work opportunity. As soon as I could, I took this option so I could stop fighting Charlotte traffic every day.
After moving to Austin and working 100% remote for almost two years, it occurred to me that I didnt need to stay in one location. At that time I needed Ethernet to run my VPN router. Since I couldnt get this in a RV, I decided to travel the country and stay in AirBnBs.
It was quite entertaining finding places to stay. I would have to reach out, ask if they had an Ethernet hookup, and allowed a dog and a cat. Luckily, there are a lot of amazing hosts out there and I was able to travel to over 16 states via this method.
How To Get Wifi In Rv
Wireless connection has become the go-to solution in home network setups thanks to its convenience and reliability. However, it created someterminology confusion in the process. In this context, when people ask how to get WiFi in an RV, they can mean two different things. Sometimes they will refer to atravel modem router mentioned above essentially a WiFi inside the car.
Sometimes, however, they will think about a hotspot on the RV camps premises. Going online in this way has its own set of challenges. First, such hotspots often struggle to deliver consistent speeds to all the campers. This will be especially noticeable in large areas with uneven coverage. Second, the walls of your RV will make the reception even worse. While this problem might be addressed with a WiFi booster or a repeater. However, you still end up with a subpar connection, so if you are ready to purchase a separate gadget for the Internet on the road a mobile modem is probably a better option.

Why You Often Cant Get High Speed Internet For Rv
Getting a flaky, slow, or unreliable WiFi connection is usually what happens when traveling in an RV. And this means you cant get any work done, nor you can relax.
The most obvious reason why you cant get high speed Internet for RV is its complete absence. There are areas that dont have cellular coverage. As you may be traveling on a stormy day, which makes it hard to connect to the satellites.
But lets assume youve got some Internet available. Compared to wired connections, wireless signals are far more prone to sporadic and temporary connectivity issues.
This is what happens when you see the Internet is slow:
- packets of transmitted data are lost or received out of order.
- the connection tries to resync, thus slowing down the whole process.
- if the packet loss rate is high, the connection will not be functional.
Assuming you have access to multiple connections WiFi, cellular, satellite this will not save you from slow Internet. Each connection can be slow on its own. The best you can get is be able to stay online, with short disconnects while you switch between connections.
Is Portable Internet For Van Life Really Worth It
Theres no denying the convenience of van life internet service. The ability to research anything, from the nearest RV parking lot to directions for your destination, is highly convenient. However, some people need portable internet more than others. For example, if you work remotely, then internet is an absolute must.
With so many different internet options available, its safe to say theres something for everyone. Wed recommend a WiFi hot spot device for anyone in need of strong, speedy connection. While its one of the more costly options , its also the most reliable. If you have any questions about getting WiFi or wireless internet on the road, feel free to contact our team today!

How To Access Internet On The Road
Lets begin with the most obvious method to access the internet, and what can be the most annoying.
If you are camping in privately-owned, developed campgrounds, you have definitely come across ads for a free Wi-Fi facility that comes included in the total cost of your campground accommodations. At first glance this can sound like a tremendous internet solution available at no extra charge which only requires you to turn on the Wi-Fi on your device, choose the right connection, log in, and enjoy seamless connectivity while you are on the road.
But, while several campgrounds have the best of intent when they offer free WiFi, the reality is not all roses and there are unpleasant things to deal with. For example, it can be hard for one signal source to sufficiently cover a large area and meet the demands of numerous users. This may tax the bandwidth so excessively that even surfing feels more like viewing a slideshow.
