How To Know If Youre Using A Secured Network
The purpose of Wi-Fi is to be able to search the Web and have internet service. When youre using the Internet, look at the browser bar. At the very beginning of the URL, you should see HTTPS. The letter S indicates that the site is secure. Without secure data encryption, its easy for a hacker to intercept the site, watch what youre doing on the site, and steal your information like credit card numbers and your home address .
If you have a Wi-Fi to connect to but there are a number of similar networks, dont just choose any. Try to log into one by entering an incorrect password. If the wrong password successfully connects, its a sign that something is not right. Being that youre connected with the wrong password shows that the connection is unsecured and potentially malicious. Keep in mind that most places, be a resort or an aircraft, will only have one Wi-Fi.
To be safe, use anti-virus software on your devices when youre connected to a public Wi-Fi network.

Install The Wifi System
The installation of your network will vary, depending on the WiFi system you choose. Just follow the manufacturers instructions as they take you through the setup.
Additional coverage includes extending the WiFi range for larger vacation properties. If you have a larger vacation rental or even a two story property, it can be hard to get Internet access in all corners of the house.
Each of the recommendations above offer the option of buying a second unit to extend your range. For example, you might set up the base station in the downstairs living room with a second at the top of the stairs to expand your network to the bedrooms and den.

How To Get Internet When Traveling
It is a question I get asked many times, probably because I seem to be online constantly. Internet while traveling is something that I really value and I cant go without anymore. That said in 2013 I spent 15 days in the mountains in Nepal and totally loved being offline, although it took me like 4 days to accept there was no phone signal! Anyway I always make sure that I have temporary internet access while traveling and there are a couple ways to make this happen:
- Buying a local sim card
- Renting/buying a portable WiFi device
- Getting an international sim card with global WiFi
How Hotspots And Wifi Work
Hotspots are sites that offer an Internet connection over a wireless local area network by way of a router that then connects to an Internet service provider. Hotspots can be found at many coffee shops, universities, libraries, airports, restaurants, hotels, hospitals, department stores, campgrounds and other public locations. Also known as “WiFi hotspots,” these sites primarily utilize WiFi technology, which allows electronic devices to connect to the Internet or exchange data wirelessly through radio waves .

Travel Routers Also Work Well
For those not traveling with a laptop, a travel router brings strong Wi-Fi to phones, tablets, and other devices. The better ones have a whole range of features, including boosting the signal from an existing Wi-Fi network to give better speeds on whatever device youre using.
You typically set it up from your web browser, then put it wherever you can find the best Wi-Fi signal and let it do its thing.
One of the better multi-purpose devices out there is the RavPower FileHub. Relatively light and compact, not only does it give stronger Wi-Fi, its also a portable battery for charging up USB-powered gadgets, an SD card reader, and more.
If you only care about boosting your Wi-Fi, check out the Netgear EX6120 instead. It plugs directly into a power socket, and provides greater range than the FileHub or USB-powered versions.
Change Places While Staying In The Room
This might sound a little ridiculous and silly but you can get a better signal reception that can make a huge difference. At times you might be using one of the internet services in the world but you might not be able to get a better signal. This is because a home appliance like cordless phones, microwave ovens, and other home appliances that you use at home might be interrupting your signal reception. Also, the building material and other objects disrupt signals as well. So changing places at times might be something helpful.

Knowing your own usage tendencies as well as what kind of work assets you need will go a long way towards narrowing down your selection. Once you find the perfect mix of portable and reliable, the world is your oyster.

Best Thing About A Pocket Wifi
The main reasson why people want to get Wifi on the road instead of buying a local sim card is to NOT change phone numbers. AND I AGREE! That is for sure the number 1 advantage of a portable WiFi device over a local sim card. Changing phone number in every country can be a hassle and that is where a pocket WiFi is a winner!
Another big advantage of having a portable WiFi device is that you can connect up to 5 devices at the same time. So in case you are traveling with children I can definitely recommend using a portable WiFi device as they can all connect at the same time. Laptop, phone, tablet, no problem.

Buy A Portable Router
Whether your phone is not hotspot-enabled or your data plan is not sufficient for your needs, an alternative is to purchase a portable router. These generally allow up to 10 devices to access the internet. Like your smartphone, these require inserting a SIM card for connectivity. While using a portable router will incur an upfront fee and an additional charge for internet access, there are plenty of service providers from which you can rent them and often at a reasonable rate.
These routers are typically powered by USB, and most models come with an extension cable to plug them in. Just remember that binging on Netflix during your travels can be a serious drain on your battery, so dont forget to bring a travel adapter! As a plus, many models allow you to plug devices into the router, which can be an effective way of charging your mobile devices on the go.
There are many benefits to using a portable Wi-Fi router. They are substantially more secure than public Wi-Fi. Further, they are highly convenient while traveling. Unless you have a connected car with built-in internet access, a portable router may be necessary. While they may incur some additional costs, they are a great way of getting reliable internet access without savaging your cellular data plan.

Enable Browser Data Compression
Even your choice of web browser makes a difference. Both Opera and Chrome have a built-in system that can compress text and images before they get sent down to your device. The end result? A lot less data has to make its way over that slow connection, so web pages load noticeably faster.
