NETGEAR WiFi Extender Setup: How To

Do you have a spot in your home such as a bedroom or out on the deck where its just harder to get a reliable Wi-Fi signal? Youre not alone. Luckily, through better Wi-Fi router placement or tech such as a Wi-Fi extender or Wi-Fi booster, you can easily enhance your internet strength. Heres what you need to know.

Connecting To Other Devices In Low

Want to have a better wifi connection to your computer in a room that typically gets a weak wifi signal? After your initial setup, you can move your wifi extender closer to the device you want to connect and attempt to boost the signal. Keep in mind that the distance between the router and the extender is important.

When you plug the extender into a new outlet, a green light will indicate that you have a good connection with your wifi router. A red light means you need to get closer the router. You may need to do this a few times before you find an optimal distance.

Once you have a good connection, you can connect your device by using the new network name . The network will be the same but has an extension of either 2.4G or 5G. User will use the same password as you when connecting with your regular network.

Quality Of The Performance

A good extender should maintain reliable performance. The signal should comfortably cover the stipulated range without any struggle. If you have wired and wireless devices, each should have a chance to enjoy the connection.

Devices operating from the farthest end of the range should also enjoy a fast and reliable connection. Device prioritization responsible for making each device consume the right amount of internet as per its needs should also conveniently work.

Keep Your Router Updated

If you follow the news, youve heard about the growing number of large-scale malware attacks that are costing businesses and individuals alike billions every year. Many of these attacks wouldnt be possible if all routers were kept updated. Once a malware infects a router, it can steal bandwidth and spread itself across the network to other devices.

But even without a presence of a dangerous malware, routers with old firmware perform worse than routers that are properly updated.

To check if your router is running the newest firmware available:

  • Launch a web browser on your computer or mobile device and connect to your routers network.
  • Enter the IP address of the router into the web browser.
  • If you dont know what the IP address is, check if there is an information sticker somewhere on the router.
  • Log in with admin username and password.
  • Again, if you dont know what the right admin password is, look at the information sticker on the bottom or back of your router.
  • Select an option called Firmware Update or Router Update.
  • Because there are many different routers, you may need to do some digging and detective work to find the right option.
  • Wait until your router finds and installs the latest firmware.
  • Never interrupt the update. If it takes a long time and your router appears to be unresponsive, give it a few more minutes before you disconnect the router from power and turn it on again.
  • How To Extend Your Wi

A single Wi-Fi router is no match for a larger home. Youre bound to run into a dead zone sooner or later, and then all is lost especially if you have kids. Luckily, theres a way to skip all the drama, and all it takes is a secondary router.

A secondary router acts as an extender that takes your Wi-Fi signal and re-transmits it. Thats a fresh data stream right out of thin air. Heres how to do it.

Do Wifi Boosters Only Work With Wireless Devices

WiFi boosters work with wireless and wired devices. The majority of boosters have at least one ethernet port that can be used for printers, computers, smart TVs, and gaming consoles.

The setup process would be slightly different than the one discussed earlier. Rather than wirelessly connecting the devices to the booster, you would use ethernet or gigabit ethernet cables to wire the device to the booster.

Several Things Can Impact Your Wi

Wifi range extender easy to hook up

Think of Wi-Fi as a bridge between your devices and the internet. Wi-Fi lets you use your smartphone to send or receive information on your home network rather than on your mobile data plan. To access it, you need a Wi-Fi router, which distributes a signal to your computer, printer, phone, tablet and any other device and creates a network.

Wi-Fi isnt perfect. The signal gets weaker the longer the distance between you and the Wi-Fi router or the more physical obstacles such as a corner or a brick wall between your device and the router.

In a pinch, you can temporarily create a hotspot with your mobile phone to supplement your Wi-Fi. But for a long-term fix, its worth it to check whether your Wi-Fi router is placed correctly or whether you can supplement the signal with a Wi-Fi booster.

    Setting A Spectrum Network

    • Connect the cable

Start by connecting the coax cable to the internet outlet and then power the Spectrum modem router. Let the modem startup as some do not have routers. Spectrum should automatically connect with the modem.

At times the process may fail. You will need to disconnect the devices and then make a new connection. Check on the IN and OUT ports so that they connect correctly.

    • Connect the modem to the router

Once the modem is ready and functioning, the next step is to connect it and the router. Using the Ethernet cable and ports, you will connect the yellow port of the router to the port of the modem.

Plug the power port of the router into the power source and switch it on. If there is a small challenge with the connection, you can consider disconnecting and redoing the connection.

The way to know if the connection is behaving as you expect is by checking on the lights. If you dont see the green lights, you can switch the device off then on.

    • Set up the device

The setup process is simple as it offers straightforward procedures. You can choose to use a mobile app or any setup device. Using this device, you will choose a unique SSID and password that you can find on the back of the router.

Once you have logged in, you will have a chance to make various changes, such as choosing a different username and different password. Once the router is set, you can begin to connect your other devices, including a Wi-Fi extender, to increase the range.

Add Signal Strength With A Wi

A Wi-Fi repeater is a second type of Wi-Fi booster. This piece of hardware actually has 2 wireless routers one to grab your existing network and a second which takes that signal to create an enhanced network with a bigger coverage area. To work well, the Wi-Fi repeater should be placed in a spot that already receives a strong signal say, in the mudroom where it picks up the network from a router in the kitchen. The repeater can then increase the network strength to a deck so that you can work at home if the weather is nice. One tradeoff: the signal is generally strong with a Wi-Fi repeater but the bandwidth may decrease, so response time may lag a bit.

Upstairs Downstairs: Better Signal In Multistory Homes

If you have a ranch house or a single-floor apartment, you should be home-free. However, when setting up an extender for a floor above or below the router , youll need to take account of the extra height and all the wood, steel and plaster in your floors and ceilings building materials that can absorb part of the Wi-Fi signal. Solve this by moving the extender closer to the router than you might if both devices were on the same floor. In fact, it often works best in multi-story situations if the router and extender are roughly above or below each other.

    How To Connect Tp

    Setup TP

TP-Link is a brand that is very famous for the production of high-quality models. Wi-Fi extenders are known for working with various ISPs such as Spectrum. Below is how you can connect your TP-Link extender to the spectrum router.

  • Connect the Wi-Fi extender to the power source and the router using an Ethernet port. You can also choose to connect wirelessly if your computer can connect. If not, you will use the Ethernet port too.
  • Allow the extender to boot and start the connection process. After all the LED lights produce a constant green light, you will log in to the user interface or the app using the extender credentials. Once you log in successfully, you will get to the settings option and scan for the devices. You should get the spectrum router present as one of the available wireless devices.
  • Set the Wi-Fi extender by selecting the region, then click next to select the wireless network and enter the password. If the SSID code is not visible, you will look for it manually and input it. When signing in, use the same credentials like those of the router so that the name and the password of the network remain the same hence convenience in roaming, after your complete click next.
  • Complete the connection by clicking next. However, you should confirm that the settings are proper before finalizing. You can then change the location of the extender to an optimal place then allow the connection to take place.

    Dont Forget To Reboot

The timeless IT advice, If it doesnt work, try switching it on and off”, also applies to WiFi routers. A simple reboot is often enough to considerably improve your WiFi speeds. A reboot clears the routers memory and allows updates to install.

To reboot your router, either press the restart button located on the back or simply disconnect the router from power and turn it on again.

If your router really starts installing an update during the reboot, be patient and dont interrupt the update process by turning off your router. Depending on your routers performance, the update process may take more than 10 minutes.

    Are Wifi Boosters Secure

WiFi boosters use the same level of security as WiFi routers – WEP, WPA, and WPA2, with WPA/WPA2 being more secure. In 2019 a new security protocol was introduced, known as WPA3. The new protocol improved the security features within public and private WiFi networks, making it more difficult for hackers to access your wireless network.

Do Wifi Boosters Increase Internet Speed

How to easily get faster Wi-Fi with a range extender | Hook It Up

The internet speed you receive from your internet service provider is the bottleneck, a WiFi booster will not increase your internet speed.

However, WiFi boosters use powerful amplifiers and antennas to boost and broadcast the signal in a very efficient manner. As a result, it appears as if they improve your internet speed.

For example, let say you purchased a WiFi booster on Amazon that supports up to 750 Mbps, but your internet plan only provides you with a max of 300 Mbps under perfect conditions. The WiFi booster will not magically increase the internet speed from 300 Mbps to 750 Mbps, it only works with what’s available. The booster will take the existing signal and facilitate a stronger signal, which will allow the connected devices to experience faster WiFi speeds.
