Does My Carrier Offer Wifi Calling
All major cell phone carriers offer WiFi calling, with support for the recent iPhones and Android phones. Heres the latest on which phones support WiFi calling for each of the major carriers:
T-Mobile : All new T-Mobile smartphones and newer T-Mobile and Sprint smartphones support WiFi calling. To find out if your existing model supports it, go to Settings on your device and search for WiFi Calling.
AT& T: All recent-model smartphones support WiFi calling. To find out if your phone supports WiFi calling, go to Device Support, find and select your device, select “View All Tutorials,” selection “Calling” and then “Wi-Fi Calling” to view the instructions. If WiFi calling isn’t listed, your phone isn’t compatible.

Of course, if your handset doesn’t support WiFi calling, you may be able to find some workarounds. Apps like FaceTime, Skype and WeChat allow you to make voice and video calls over WiFi as well as send text messages.
Move Your Router To A Better Location
Wi-Fi can travel only so far, and its signals can get interrupted or blocked by walls, floors ceilings, furniture, appliances, and basically any large physical object. They can also get interrupted by radio waves from other devices, including cordless phones, baby monitors, microwaves, and Bluetooth speakers.
So if your router is stuck in a corner of your home, you may have issues with Wi-Fi at the other end of your home. The best place for your router is in a central location, near where you use the internet most often. Dont relegate your router to a basement or closetthats just setting yourself up for connectivity issues.
If your router is already in a great location but youre still having troubles in specific areas of your home, skip ahead to step nine: extend your network.
How To Check How Good Your Reception Is
I’m pretty sure we have all been on a phone call where the quality was far less than perfect, and you could hardly hear the other person. One trick we have all used is to walk around while talking, desperately trying to find a spot where we can hear properly and when we find it, freeze into a position like a statue hoping that the signal will stay clear.
Another way often used to find a spot with good reception is to check the signal bars on your phone. When you know of a specific building or place where you always battle with signal, you could walk around and try to find a place where the most signal bars show on your phone, and then always try to use that place when you make a phone call, or use the cell signal in any other way.

Turn Things Off And On Again
Do it to your router. Do it to your modem. Do it with the devices you have connected to Wi-Fi. Everything needs a break once in a whilebut especially your modem and router.
Your modem translates internet signals between your home network and the ISP. If your internet is acting up, resetting your modem is a good place to start troubleshooting. You may be able to fix modem issues with a quick power cycle. Sometimes you have to call your internet provider to reset your modem on its end to make sure your modem is properly calibrated to be compatible with your ISPs signals.
Your router could also benefit from a quick reset to clear its memory and give it a fresh start on tasks that were bogging it down before.
It might seem simplistic, but turning your home networking equipment off and on again can really give your network a boost. We recommend rebooting your equipment regularlyat least once every few months. But keep in mind that doing this will leave you without internet for a few minutes, so plan to restart your equipment at a time when no one needs an internet connection.
How To Enable Wi
To enable Wi-Fi calling on an iPhone tap Settings, click Phone. Tap Wi-Fi Calling and enable Wi-Fi calling on This iPhone.
Enabling the Wi-Fi calling feature is equally simple on an Android device. On your home screen, tap your phone icon. Next, tap the three-dot icon and click Settings. Toggle on Wi-Fi Calling.
Placing phone calls over Wi-Fi is the same as making traditional voice calls. Your device may indicate you are utilizing a wireless network by either an image or words such as Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi call in the notification area of your device.
To turn off Wi-Fi calling on either device, go back into your phones settings and disable the feature.

What It All Sounds Like
All four major carriers have HD Voice on calls within the carrier right now. If you are calling someone else on the same carrier and you both have recent phones, you’re probably getting HD voice calling. When you make the call, you should see a little HD icon light up in the upper left hand corner of your screen. If you aren’t getting HD calling, and you’re on Verizon, make sure that both phones have Advanced Calling turned on in settings.
The call samples below were all recorded on calls between two Samsung Galaxy S8 or S9 phones. We recorded the audio by piping a 3.5mm cable into the phone’s headphone jack and recording it on a PC using Audacity.
Castle explained that even if AT& T, T-Mobile, and Verizon are all using AMR-WB, the carriers are linked “over an old type of connection which downgrades the voice to narrowband quality.” Once the networks upgrade their interconnections, they’ll be able to connect VoLTE calls to each other in HD quality. They’ve been promising that this will happen since late 2014.
The situation may get better by the end of 2018. T-Mobile says it’s hoping to have HD voice interoperability with both Verizon and AT& T this year. Sprint needs to launch standards-based VoLTE to join the interoperability party, and its CTO John Saw said at Mobile World Congress that would probably happen .

Tip #: Change Location
The cell signal will be different in different parts of the same building. Moving to another part of the office or home might give you better reception. Try the reception at different windows, as a window will not block the signal as much as a wall would. An open window would be best if weather permits, because glass can also reduce reception signals – Especially Low Emission windows.
How Much Does Wifi Calling Cost
WiFi calling doesn’t cost anything extra. Carriers treat your WiFi calls as though you were making a regular cellular call from the U.S. So whatever rates and fees apply to your regular cellular calls will also apply to your WiFi calls, including deducting call minute from your monthly allotment if you don’t have an unlimited plan.
That means WiFi calling is perfect for overseas travelers because theres typically no roaming or international charge for making calls or sending texts back home. And many carriers’ plans include free calling to Canada and Mexico. Keep in mind, though, that you will be charged an international rate based on your international calling plan, if you call an international line using your U.S.-based smartphone. And, WiFi calling isnt supported in some countries, including Australia, India, Cuba, Singapore, and China.
Update Your Radio Or Firmware
If you’re receiving OTA updates from your carrier or manufacturer, then this probably doesn’t apply to you, but if you are running custom ROMs, you may find yourself occasionally needing to manually update the radio on your Android. As an example, here’s how to update the bootloader and radio on the Nexus 5. You should also make sure you’re on the latest version of Android to ensure the best performance. To check this, go to Settings > About > Software updates.

Buy A Wifi Repeater/ Booster/ Extender
Even though they are referred to by many names, WiFi boosters, repeaters, and extenders are basically the same thing.
WiFi repeaters are relatively simple devices that take an existing signal from your WiFi router and rebroadcast it as a new network. This new network is just an extension of your main network, and all data that go through it also go through the main network.
WiFi boosters and extenders are very similar, but they also amplify the existing signal before rebroadcasting it to create a second network. Because WiFi boosters typically have greater range than WiFi repeaters, they make sense in situations where the original signal is very weak.
A good repeater or booster costs less than $100, and it can be installed in a few minutes by anyone since the installation process usually involves only the press of the WPS button. You can find a list of the top 5 WiFi boosters at the end of this article.
To achieve the best performance when using a WiFi repeater or booster, its a good idea to use a WiFi booster app to analyze existing WiFi coverage and determine the optimal way how to extend the existing WiFi network.
