What Do Mbps And Mbps Mean And Why Does It Matter

Okay, so, some boring but important stuff here. People often say megabytes when they mean megaBITS. And visa versa. But, there is a big difference.

MBps = megabytes

Mbps = megabits

So, if you refer to my speed test above you will see that I am getting 17.32 Mbps per second. To find out how many megabytes that is you just divide by 8 which equals 2.165 MBps.

Now, 1 MB is equal to 1024 KB so if you want to know how fast you are going to able to or movie you should refer to the KB or MB per second rate as that is usually what they are measured in.

For example, if you are downloading a 50 MB file at 1 MB per second it will take you just under 50 seconds.

What Is Wifi Speed

Before we explain how to increase speed of WiFi networks, we first need to go over what WiFi speed really is. WiFi speed, typically stated in megabits per second , corresponds to the rate at which data packets can be transferred in a given direction between the user and the WiFi router.

  • IEEE 802.11ac commonly shortened to 802.11ac, this revision of the IEEE 802.11 protocol introduced the ability to provide high-throughput wireless local area networkson the 5 GHz band, increasing the maximum throughput to 1 Gbit/s.

Make Sure That The Access Point And Adapter Support And Enable Wmm Mode

WMM mode must be enabled for speeds above 54 Mbps.The 802.11n specification requires devices to support the 802.11e standard to use the High Throughput mode, i.e. speeds above 54 Mbps.

WMM mode support is required for devices that are certified to use the 802.11n standard. We recommend enabling WMM mode by default in all certified Wi-Fi devices .Please note that WMM mode should be enabled on both the access point and wireless adapter.

WMM mode in the settings of different adapters can be called differently: WMM, Multimedia environment, WMM Capable, etc.

As more clients contend for the medium, the medium contention overhead increases significantly, and efficiency drops. Therefore, the aggregate throughput is usually at best 50 percent of the advertised 802.11 data rate.

Maximum Data Rate And Connection Speed Are Different Things

To begin with, many users incorrectly focus on the connection speed , which is displayed in the connection information. For example, in the Windows operating system, it is shown in the ‘Speed’ field on the ‘General’ tab of the ‘Status’ window of the wireless connection.
