Choose Cable When Possible
It may seem counter intuitive after all, you are extending your wireless network but using cable to connect two buildings is always the most reliable method in terms of speed and latency.
Despite its reliability, cable also has its limitations. Regular Cat 5 or Cat 6 cable can only be run for about 328 feet, plus you have to use the right materials and make sure its properly installed, so that it doesnt erode or sever. Optical fiber cable can be run for much longer distances, but these types of installations can be very expensive and involve obtaining digging permits and otherwise dealing with complex city regulations.
Extending Wifi For Free
Here are some methods that may extend the WiFi range and coverage of your network without spending a dime.
Move your router
Simply finding a new location for your wireless router can have a dramatic impact on your WiFi signal for a variety of reasons. You should strive for a central location that is free from physical obstructions like walls and doors if possible. Dont keep your router in a closet or a desk drawer if you hope to realize its true potential signals range.
Try to place it as high as possible, with a line of sight to all devices that will be connected to it. While this is not always totally feasible, getting as close as you can to this goal will help you extend the range of your WiFi router.
Analyze your WiFi network
When you use a WiFi analyzer such as NetSpot you can survey your own network as well as other networks whose signals may overlap with yours. How To Tweak The Range On Wifi
Tweaking the range on the Wi-Fi signal produced by your wireless router lets your connected wireless devices roam further from the router, and in some cases, provides for faster data transfers. The range of the Wi-Fi signal on your wireless router depends on the wireless standard used, the channel, and the end devices themselves. You can tweak the range by adjusting the wireless settings on the router and removing sources of electromagnetic interference.
Remove obstacles that may cause electromagnetic interference. This may require you to move the wireless router to a different location. Close proximity to large metal objects, such as a filing cabinet, and to fluorescent lighting may hinder the wireless signal. Ideally, you want to position the wireless router in a central location for the best wireless signal radius.
Log in to the router’s Web-based interface and change the wireless signal type, if applicable. For example, a wireless router capable of delivering 802.11n-based wireless may be configured to only use an 802.11g-based signal, which is slower. 802.11n is backward compatible with 802.11g and 802.11b on the 2.4 GHz frequency band. This means that the wireless router can service 802.11n-compatible devices with faster speeds simultaneously with slower 802.11g- or 802.11b-compatible devices.

Use 24ghz Instead Of 5ghz Wi
Wi-Fi can use one of two frequency bands: 2.4GHz or 5GHz. Many people think the latter is better because it offers faster speeds.
However, this comes at a price: range. The higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength. And 5GHz signals cannot penetrate walls, ceilings, desks, and, yes, people as well as 2.4GHz signals. (Incidentally, this is why 5G is promising such fast speeds, because it uses much higher frequencies – called millimetre wave – but these signals have a tough time getting through glass, trees and even rain.
2.4GHz, on the other hand is better at delivering a signal over a greater distance, at slower speeds. That’s why you might be able to get better range from your router by forcing your phone or laptop to connect to your router’s 2.4GHz network. Many routers combine the two frequencies into one network name. That’s done for convenience, but it means you can’t choose which network to connect to.
If your router is like this, log in to the settings web page and look for a Wi-Fi menu where you can split the two frequencies into two separate network names.
It’s worth bearing in mind that 2.4GHz devices face a battle because lots of other things also use this frequency including microwaves, baby monitors, Bluetooth and more.
So your mileage may vary, but it is well worth understanding the difference between Wi-Fi bands, as you can use these to your advantage.

How To Extend Wifi Signal To Another Building
Perhaps you have a guest house in the backyard or maybe your office spans two neighboring buildings. It may seem impossible to extend existing WiFi outside and connect the two at first, but its actually not very hard or expensive to achieve, if you follow our advice.
For example, store bought or even enterprise grade access points are not recommended for extending your WiFi outside to another building because the wireless signal will have to pass through at least two sets of walls and will be significantly weakened and potentially unusable by the time it hits the end users device.

To change the password, look for an option that is typically nested under the Administration tab. The screen will likely ask for your current router password and then ask you to enter a new password.
As you create the new password, remember the usual recommendations for creating a secure password. Use one thats not too difficult for you to remember but complex enough so its not easy to guess. A passphrase, which uses a combination of easy-to-remember words, is also a good option.
Just be sure to remember the new password so you don’t have to struggle to think of it or ultimately reset the router in the future. Opt For Outdoor Access Points
If you want to extend your WiFi range outdoors to a pool, backyard, or garage, the best thing to do is to place an outdoor access point in the area where you need WiFi. Outdoor access points are weather resistant and will give you the same performance you expect from an indoor access point.
Some outdoor access points like, those from Ruckus Wireless or AeroHive, can be run using the same unified management system. Outdoor access points are usually more expensive than indoor access points, so we would only recommend using them if you absolutely need great WiFi outdoors.

Increasing Range In Other Ways
In most standard Wi-Fi routers, the three standards, a, b and g, are enough. But in long-range Wi-Fi, special technologies are used to get the most out of a Wi-Fi connection. The 802.11-2007 standard adds 10 MHz and 5 MHz OFDM modes to the 802.11a standard, and extend the time of cyclic prefix protection from 0.8 s to 3.2 s, quadrupling the multipath distortion protection. Some commonly available 802.11a/g chipsets support the OFDM ‘half-clocking’ and ‘quarter-clocking’ that is in the 2007 standard, and 4.9 GHz and 5.0 GHz products are available with 10 MHz and 5 MHz channel bandwidths. It is likely that some 802.11n D.20 chipsets will also support ‘half-clocking’ for use in 10 MHz channel bandwidths, and at double the range of the 802.11n standard.
802.11n and MIMO
Preliminary 802.11n working became available in many routers in 2008. This technology can use multiple antennas to target one or more sources to increase speed. This is known as MIMO, Multiple Input Multiple Output. In tests, the speed increase was said to only occur over short distances rather than the long range needed for most point-to-point setups. On the other hand, using dual antennas with orthogonal polarities along with a 2×2 MIMO chipset effectively enable two independent carrier signals to be sent and received along the same long distance path.
