How To Make Your Car Have Wifi

What About Using My Phone For Navigation

How to Install WiFi in your Vehicle

If you use your phone for navigation like Google Maps or Waze then this works with Echo Auto too. Once connected you’ll get the navigation directions through your Echo Auto – using the default navigation app selected in your Alexa app. Open the Alexa app, head into settings > traffic > default navigation app and you can select the app you want Alexa to use.

Then when you ask for direction, Alexa will trigger that app and open it on your phone. You just have to make sure you’re precise with your destination requests, although Alexa is smart – and you can ask for shops or restaurants, for example.

If you are using a service like Waze that integrates streaming music services, you’re better off using Alexa to control those services via voice, rather than using the in-Waze option.

Buying A Portable Cellular Router

Remember how we said that using your smartphones data plan through a WiFi hotspot could be expensive? Well, some mobile internet providers have seen a gap in the market and will sell you a data-only SIM card which isnt meant to go in a phone.

Instead, you can use these SIM cards with battery-powered portable 4G routers. These offer a dedicated WiFi hotspot and also network your devices together as a bonus. So youll have WiFi without an internet provider wherever you go.

If your mobile data plan is good enough, you can simply use this for all your internet needs whether out on the road or when you get home. Simply plug the mobile router in to stop the battery from running dry.

How To Find A Hotspot

Your wireless-equipped laptop and other devices, such as tablets and smartphones, may notify you when you’re in range of wireless networks. If you don’t receive a notification that there are available wireless networks in the area, go to the network settings to find area hotspots.

You’ll find hotspots in many places. For example:

  • When you walk into a Starbucks or one of the many other coffee shops, your smartphone notifies you of the presence of a Wi-Fi hotspot. Each store has a home screen for its hotspot. After you accept the terms of the hotspot agreement, you’re connected.
  • Restaurants that offer a hotspot post the information on a table tent card or at the entrance. You may need to ask for the password to sign on to the service.
  • When you stay in a hotel, ask the desk clerk for the Wi-Fi password or sign-in process. The service may be complimentary, or you may be charged a daily fee for its use.
  • Most airports offer free hotspots and display the login procedure throughout the terminals. Shopping malls also offer hotspots and may post login information around the mall.
  • Many bookstores have hotspots for their customers.
  • Libraries and other public buildings often have Wi-Fi hotspots.

A quick internet search for hotspots in will turn up a list of locations where you can access the internet. Although many are free, some hotspots require a fee or subscription.

What It Does What It Will Cost And Why You’d Want It

Connecting to 4G WiFi Hotspot in a Chevy

Thanks to consumer desire for connectivity and convenience, WiFi is now common in many households. The wireless Internet connection standard is also pervasive outside the home at coffee shops, hotels and even outdoor spaces like parks.

One of the few places where WiFi hasn’t been available is in vehicles, but that’s changing now that drivers and passengers are demanding to stay connected. Automakers have begun to turn their vehicles into roving WiFi hot spots via onboard high-speed cellular modems and other means.

Since most drivers already have an Internet connection on their smartphones, in-car WiFi may seem like a technology trying to fulfill a need that doesn’t exist and another way for wireless carriers to get consumers to spend more on data. But Mark Boyadjis, a senior analyst of automotive infotainment and HMI for IHS Technology, said the technology isn’t “just about having a WiFi hot spot in the car.”

He noted that WiFi is used by Tesla to perform over-the-air software updates on the Model S, and a technology called WiFi Direct will be appearing in cars soon to allow a better data connection than Bluetooth. He also predicted that, as with other new technologies, in-car WiFi will eventually enable uses that no one has yet envisioned.

Boyadjis added that WiFi Direct is becoming a more common feature in smartphones and tablets. Automakers have had to wait for the technology to become available in portable devices before adding it to their cars.

Adjust Your Router Settings

These extenders get the job done, but you might also be able to boost the signal from your wifi router by adjusting settings in the firmware. Depending on your firmware, you can amp up the throughput and achieve greater range and signal strength. Just be careful, as this will also make your router run hotter and could damage or shorten its lifespan.

If your router doesnt have this option, look into replacing the firmware with an open-source alternative like DD-WRT or Tomato. This will unlock capabilities that are walled off by the manufacturers firmware. Just use caution, as flashing the wrong firmware or flashing improperly could permanently brick the router.

The Best Ways To Get In

The Internet instantly gratifies your need to stay in touch. People today demand connectivity wherever we go, at home, at the office, in bars and restaurants, at the mall, on airplanes and especially in the car.

If your car supports it, the best solution is to use the Internet connectivity and Wi-Fi built into your car, since it gets the better reception than other mobile connectivity solutions. More and more car makers, such as Chevrolet and Audi, are designing cars with Wi-Fi hotspot capability. But even if your car doesnt have Wi-Fi built-in, it’s easy to bring connectivity to your car.

Cars That Support Wireless Carplay

While there’s a good chance any car you purchase today offers at least an option for wired CarPlay, wireless CarPlay is much harder to find. There are only a handful of models that support it, even though it’s been possible for four years.

  • Audi A6
  • Audi A7
  • Audi A8
  • Audi Q8
  • Audi e-tron SUV
  • BMW 5 Series
  • BMW 3 Series
  • 2019 BMW range
  • Lamborghini Urus
  • Mercedes A-Class
  • Mercedes GLE
  • 2019 Mini range
  • Toyota Supra

However, some automakers are finally starting to build in wireless CarPlay across their entire ranges. BMW was the first, introducing wireless CarPlay in its 2017 5 series, and now offering the feature in every 2019 model in its showrooms . Mini, which happens to be owned by BMW, has brought wireless CarPlay to its 2019 stable as well.

Ford has announced it will follow suit beginning next year with select vehicles that support its next-generation SYNC 4 infotainment system , while Mercedes-Benz is including the feature as part of its MBUX platform, which just launched in the latest A-Class compact.

As most older vehicles shipped without any built-in networking, it makes sense to use 4G .

After all, if your passengers have mobile internet, why would you need to provide them with connectivity? Well, a couple of reasons spring to mind:

  • It’s a long journey and their mobile data might be capped
  • You’re driving beyond their carrier’s mobile internet range
  • In either scenario, it’s smart to use an in-car solution. But for city and suburban travel, there’s no reason why passengers shouldn’t use their own internet.

    Use A Universal Portable Hotspot

How To Add WiFi To Your Car

If you’re likely to regularly require mobile internet for your family or yourself, a portable hotspot seems smart.

These devices basically replicate the hotspot function of a mobile phone. Like your home router, they connect to the internet and share access via a secure password. The difference is, like a phone, portable hotspots use mobile internet. As such, a subscription or pre-payment is required to use them, on-top of the initial purchase price.

Various manufacturers produce portable hotspots. This Netgear 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot has 10 hours of battery and up to 10 days of standby charge.

To use one, you’ll need to speak to a mobile network to order a SIM card. Be sure to choose one that fits and provides the right level of usage. Otherwise, you could end up running out of data and have to use your smartphone!
