How To Make Your Wifi Better On Ps4

Use A Wired Connection

This, of course, doesnt apply to the vita, but if you are using a PC or the PS TV, you will likely have the ability to use a wired connection to connect directly to the network. A wired connection is always faster and more reliable than a WiFi connection. The same is the case for the PS4. If you have the option, connect the PS4 to the network using a wired connection to make there is one less signal to worry about.

How To Improve Wifi Speed On Your Ps4

As mentioned, a slow WiFi connection can leave a bitter experience and sometimes even make online multiplayer games an agony to play. Fortunately, weve listed down some simple ways to help improve the WiFi speed on your PS4:

  • Router Placement: The placement of your router can have an enormous impact on your WiFi speeds. Since your WiFi router sends signals in all directions, avoid placing them in corners because they will be sent outside your house. Routers also tend to signal downwards, so placing it at a height will help achieve better WiFi speeds.
  • Router Settings: Router settings can be very complex, but well mention some of the most common settings to tweak to get the most out of your router. First, have your router updated with its manufacturers latest software and firmware.

Then, turning off old router protocols will also help you achieve faster WiFi speeds. Your router may be new with the latest 802.11ac protocols, but you might have other devices connected using older protocols such as 802.11g. These devices bring down the entire connection speed and should ideally be removed from the network.

  • Change DNS: Changing your DNS settings can usually help improve the WiFi speed on a PS4. DNS servers help provide the IP address of the which are associated with the web address you enter. Due to this, the DNS settings can influence the speed of your PS4s WiFi. Find out how to change DNS settings on your PS4 in the following section:

Devices That Cause Interruptions In A Wi

Another thing thats worth considering is interference and interruptions, which are often caused by other household electronics and utilities, many of which the average person is completely unaware of. Most consumers dont know there are all sorts of devices out there that can cause interruptions in your WIfi connection including the following:

  • Bluetooth Devices
  • Other Wi-Fi Networks in the Area
  • Microwaves
  • Baby Monitors
  • CB Radios or Walkie Talkies

With that said, when using 5 GHz network, you are less likely to have interference issues. If your PS4 is an older model, make sure you either have a hard connection or are using an adapter like the Powerline, which is an excellent way to sidestep these issues. Overall, being aware of what interference is and why it happens can help alleviate many other problems you may have with your Wi-Fi or Bluetooth devices.

Connect Directly To The Ps4or Dont

I apologize for the lack of a concrete answer here. Depending on the location of your PS4 and router, it may be faster to choose one over the other. To make this worse, it can even vary from within the house. For example, my PS4 is upstairs. When I am downstairs its faster to connect via the internet, when upstairs its faster to connect directly. It is annoying as hell if you move around the house, but it is the price to pay. You can set this setting in the remote play section of the settings.

Troubleshoot Your Network Wifi Speed

How to Instantly Improve Your PS4 Wifi Connection Speed [Updated 2020]

Before you call your ISP and tell them what you think of their terrible Internet speed, you need to make sure that they are indeed at fault. In most cases I have seen, the cause for the slow Wifi is actually something that can easily be solvable by troubleshooting your own WiFi network.

To troubleshoot your network all you need to do is use the process of elimination until you can identify the area that is at fault.

Is 5ghz Better For Playing Ps4 Online

In theory, 5GHz is vastly superior to 2.4GHz when it comes to gaming online.

Youll need to test it out on your home networking setup, but it generally offers:

Routers pushing this band offer more room for wireless devices to occupy by way of an increased number of channels and more bandwidth than 2.4GHz.

The end result is a much greater potential for speed and connection reliability .

If, however, your house is on the larger side and your PS4 is set up far away from your router, you may not be be able to reap the benefits.

You might think of 5GHz as a sprinter capable of immense speed at short distances. It, unfortunately, lacks the range of 2.4GHz.

I can personally attest to the increase in speed on PS4 and otherwise due to the switch. Im using a PS4 Slim, Netgear Nighthawk router, and Verizon Fios.

The combination of the three has boosted the speeds of PS4 game and patch downloads , and reduced lag and instability. A lot of my gaming is done online with games like Battlefield V, Overwatch, Black Ops 4, and Gran Turismo Sport.

Truthfully, I wasnt experiencing a ton of lag before the Nighthawk, but the switch to 5GHz has made multiple simultaneous connections a non-issue , and dropped internet connections are nearly non-existent.

Streaming games to Twitch and YouTube was also very spotty before the switch to 5GHz.

Using ethernet always reigns supreme, but if you need to go wireless due to your set up, definitely test 5GHz.

How To Improve Ps4 Wi

I fixed it without doing anything too complicated.

I went into network connections, made sure that none of my connections is being shared and then bridged wifi and lan port to create Ethernet 2 bridged connection.

Then I plugged an ethernet cable into ps4 and laptop.

On the ps4 I went into set up as LAN and went into custom setup, then for IP Address I selected manual, gave it an IP address that will never be used by my devices eg,

for subnet mask I went onto my laptop and ran command prompt then put in command ipconfig /all and got subnet mask, default gateway as well as primary and secondary dns, then put them all into the ps4 and went onto next step, which is leaving everything default.

Now I get download speeds of 50mbps and upload of 15mbps

Disconnect The Wifi From Other Devices

If you are using a wireless network to connect your PS4 with a network, it is important that you dont let the other devices hog the network bandwidth. There are two ways to make a device stop using the internet connection or use the network less

  • End all the applications that are using the internet on the devices. If other downloads are in progress, pause them or stop them depending on your convenience. This will drastically reduce the network usage to a very few kilo bytes.
  • Disconnect from the network. This is a very efficient method to use since it will completely stop the network utility on the other devices. There are generally options to disable the network connectivity feature in the notification shade or in the device settings.

    Good Ol Fashioned Hard Wired

The most obvious solution is going to be using an ethernet port. Going hard wired is superior to WiFi in every way except convenience, besting even 5GHz.

Obviously, youll need to be close to your router for this to work, but if you have the option, do it. At worst, youll find that your lackluster networking performance is due to something else like your ISP .

And if it all pans out, you could see a tremendous improvement in terms of lag, packet loss, download speeds, and network multitasking.

Switch To A Wired Connection Instead Of Using Wifi

Improve the Internet connection on PS4 using an Ethernet cable

If our PS4 WiFi connection is desperately slow, maybe you should Consider switching to a wired connection. A classic, but effective solution.

When a PS4 is connected to the Internet via WiFi, it is quite common that you experience slower speeds. This is because there is too much distance between the console and the router. Or that there are some obstacles between them that end up weakening the connection.

On the other hand, using a wired connection, all these problems do not exist. The PS4 connects directly to your internet modem via an Ethernet cable, with a connection it will be faster and more reliable. This is what we must do to establish a wired connection:

  • First, we plugged an Ethernet cable into one of the modem’s LAN ports.
  • After we connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the LAN port of the PS4, which is located on the back of the console.
  • Once this is done you have to go to “Main menu” on the PlayStation 4 and select the option to “Setting”.
  • There we select first “Net” and in the following menu the option of “Set up Internet connection”.
  • The next step is to choose “Use a LAN cable” and finally select the option “Easy”.
  • Once we have completed these steps, our PS4 will do the rest: it will detect the Ethernet cable and connect the console to the Internet. This should considerably improve the Internet connection of our PS4. We will notice it immediately, as soon as we start to play.

Pause The Download And Unpause It

Slow downloading on your PlayStation 4 can be fixed by temporarily stopping the download and then, resuming it. Technically, there is no logical explanation for this workaround but it has proven to work on several devices one of which is the PS4 gaming console.

To do this, go to the Downloads section that is available on the Notifications page. Now, move the highlighting rectangle to the downloading game or update and push the X button on your controller. This will pause the download. Wait for a few seconds before you press the X button again to resume it.

Once you see the download continuing and an estimated end time, it means that the download is unpaused and will continue. You should now be able to notice a visible spike in the download speed. If you dont, proceed to the next solution.

    Consider Upgrading Your Internet Plan

The taste and the quality of the food heavily depend on how good the ingredients are. The same applies to your Wi-Fi and connection quality. If you have a slow internet plan to work with, nothing youll do will be enough to make it faster.

Upgrading your internet plan will be the best way to increase your connection speed, but there are few boxes youll need to check before pulling the trigger.

Ask your ISP if your infrastructure and router can support your new plan before deciding on a new internet plan. If it cant, upgrading your plan wont be enough to increase your download speeds.

You can still ask your ISP to send in a professional to your home and take the necessary steps to increase your internet infrastructure quality, which would make you eligible for an upgrade.

If you have an old router that would support such speeds, then you can also ask your ISP to assign one and finance it through your internet bill, or you can search one for your needs.
