How To Position Wifi Antennas

Increase Wifi Speed And Range Of Your Wifi Router Using External Antenna

Wifi Antenna Positioning, Does it make a difference?

Some of the WiFi routers allow you to change the antenna that is available generally, the old routers have the antenna removal option. Usually, the WiFi router antennas provided by the manufacturer will be having 2 dbi or 3 dbi power gain, which is very low when compared to the currently available antenna. So if your router does support the removable antenna, you can get a higher gain antenna like a 5dbi or a 7 dbi. That will significantly increase WiFi range.

Here is a list of External WiFi Antennas that will significantly increase your WiFi Speed and boost your WiFi Range.

Positioning 3 Router Antennas

What is the optimal way to position the 3 antennas on a WiFi access point? For a standard home router with 3 antennas, I recommend that the center antenna is vertical and that the others aim outward at 45-degree angle.

If you are not locating your router centrally in the house, adjust the antennas for greater coverage. For example, if the router will be mounted at the end of a long hall or corridor in the far end of your house, then point all the antennas perpendicular to the wall, facing the open corridor.

Reposition The Antennas On The Wi

Every Wi-Fi router comes with at least one antenna, some routers have it positioned inside the body, while others have them on the outside. These antennas help the router to direct the signal. If your Wi-Fi router has more than one antenna, you should position them perpendicular to one another for wide coverage.

How To Position Wifi Antennas To Get The Best Signal

What is the truth behind it? How should you really position your WiFi antennas?

Now that you know how the signals spread and radiate through the antennas, how do you position it so that that you get the best possible signal?

Step #1: Place Your Router in a Central Location

The first thing you want to do is to place your router or modem in a central location. Whats the point of properly positioning your antennas if the placement of your router or modem is not good anyway?

So, what you need to consider doing first is placing the router in a place where the entire area will be covered.

If you have two floors, the best router placement would be a few inches above lifted from the second floor. Signals travel downwards, not upwards.

Get the most out of it by placing it on the second floor.

Step #2: Determine the Spread of Signals

Do you want the signals to move sideward, or do you want them to move vertically? If you have multiple stories in your home, the best position for your WiFi router antenna/s would be horizontal.

This way, the signals would travel up and down evenly.

However, if you want the signals strong on just one floor, position it normally or vertically. This way, the signals that the antenna will transmit are going to be stronger horizontally.

One good tip to remember is that the signals are going to travel out of the body of the antenna, not the tip of it.

Step #3: Avoid Electromagnetic Objects or Appliances

Its an old rule and its truer than ever.

What Is The Difference Between A Router With One Two Or Three Antennas

WiFi Antenna Position and Placement

The difference between a router with one, two, or three antennas is in the number of radio channels that each is capable of transmitting and receiving in. A router with 1 antenna receives/transmits over a single radio channel, a router with 2 antennas receives/transmits over two radio channels, while a router with 3 antennas receives/transmits over three radio channels.

This means that although Wi-Fi speed is dependent on many factors, the number of antennas on a router definitely impacts speed. Theoretically, a router with three antennas transmits/receives data over three spatial streams making it three times faster than one that uses a single antenna.

Do The Router Antennas Make A Difference

The antennas themselves make a difference, but does the positioning of them change their effectiveness?

If you have a router that has external antennas, then theoretically you have more control over how the WiFi signal is directed when you strategically position the antennas.

Personally, I have never noticed much of a difference in WiFi coverage by positioning the antennas in a particular way, but I also use WiFi in a tiny part of the house . Depending on your router, the direction and angle of your antenna on your router may have a minimal effect on your wireless signal strength, particularly if your home or coverage area is small.

Can I Put My Router In A Closet

Since its not possible to have that indoors, you can improve the signal a great deal by making sure the immediate surroundings of the router/modem are clear, especially in the directions you want the signal to reach. This means you dont want to leave the router in a closet, or put it between a big TV and a wall.

The Best Way To Angle A Wifi Antenna

The direction in which you angle the antenna can make a big difference to the signal throughout your home.

Back in the old days, before satellite and internet TV, folks would spend hours holding their aerial in different positions to try and improve the reception on an old analogue box.

It can feel a little like that today when trying to get a better WiFi signal.

Dead zones and entire rooms without WiFi coverage remain common in todays connected world.

But simply tweaking the routers antenna into the optimal position can boost WiFi connectivity significantly.

Why WiFi router antenna position matters

WiFi signals are basically radio waves. A WiFi signal will get blocked, reflected and absorbed by walls and metallic surfaces. Your WiFi signal will be optimised if you choose the most appropriate antenna for the environment in which it is operating.

There are three main types of WiFi antenna:

  • Omnidirectional Antenna – waves are emitted equally in all directions
  • Semi-directional Antenna – waves are emitted in a particular pattern
  • Directional Antenna – waves are emitted in a particular direction

Most indoor WiFi routers have semi-directional or omnidirectional antennas. Your router may have one, two, three or more antennas. Most outdoor wireless antennas are directional with omnidirectional options available.

You can think of the signal pattern being emitted as resembling an ellipse – or a stretched-out doughnut.

Improve Wifi Signal In An Office Building

WiFi Router Antenna Position | WiFi Antenna Direction | How to Increase WiFi Speed

Office buildings are much larger than houses, and sometimes there are a lot more obstacles blocking the WiFis signal, preventing it from covering the entire building with a reliable connection. Similar to houses, you want the router to be located in the best possible location, and if it has detachable antennas, you could replace the antennas to improve the coverage.

In an office building, there are usually computers, printers, laptops, and smartphones in every direction, so it’s best to use omnidirectional antennas. Ceiling dome antennas can be used to improve the signal in large spaces . The dome antenna should be installed on the ceiling of the office building. After the installation, a long enough coaxial cable would need to be run through the building to connect it to the router or access point.

How To Position The Antennas Correctly

Keenetic routers are equipped with external Wi-Fi rod antennas, which can be either removable or fixed. As a rule, these antennas are omnidirectional.

Omni-directional antenna – is an antenna with 360-degree coverage in the horizontal plane .

Directional diagram :

Directional diagram :

These antennas are not directional , so you do not need to direct the router’s antenna to another device in the wireless network .

NOTE: Important! It is recommended for the best signal reception and transmission to place the Keenetic router’s antenna vertically to spread the signal in a horizontal plane. Place the antennas vertically or with a slight vertical deflection towards the desired reception area.

In the horizontal plane , the antenna will evenly emit the signal in all directions.

It is the antenna’s vertical position on the router which will transmit the signal over a larger distance horizontally with maximum power.

If your Keenetic device has several external antennas, we recommend to place them vertically as well.

There are also Keenetic routers with built-in omnidirectional antennas . It is recommended to install such routers vertically , as the built-in antennas, in this case, are usually placed horizontally.

How To Aim A Yagi Directional Outside Antenna

Directional antennas, unlike omnidirectional antennas, must be aimed in order to receive the strongest signal from your cellular carrier. Here are some things to know ahead of time:

  • Most directional antennas can cover about 15% of the horizon , so your aiming doesnt have to be laser-precise. Being off by a little will still work just fine.
  • In almost all situations, the antenna should be level and even with the horizon. Do not attempt to aim the antenna up over a roof or nearby obstacles.
  • You should attempt to aim the antenna before deciding where to permanently mount it. Once you know what direction the antenna should be pointed, try to find a location on the building so that the antenna is pointed away from the building. For example, if you need to aim your antenna North, you should mount the antenna on the North side of the building pointed away from it, not on the South side pointed over the building.

Even if you know exactly where your carriers tower is located, its still a good idea to go through this aiming process! The cell signal may not be coming directly from the tower either because of obstacles in the way or because the tower may not have an antenna aimed in your direction.

How Should You Position The 4 Antennas On A Router For Optimal Coverage

To get optimal coverage from a router with 4 antennas, you should position the 2 middle antennas vertically at 90 degrees and then position the outer left and right antennas at 45-60 degrees against the horizontal plane. Also ensure that the router itself is centrally located in your home or office.

Does Wifi Repeater Reduce Speed

For people with Wifi Cards: Position antennas like this ...

All WiFi repeaters have some speed loss, but some are much worse than others. WiFi repeaters work by receiving wireless signal and rebroadcasting it, but single band repeaters have to receive, then retransmit each packet of data using the same radio on the same channel.

How do I point my antenna to my WiFi extender? In multi-story homes, one antenna should be always down while the second antenna should be positioned differently depending on where the range extender is located and where the WiFi coverage is needed. For the most part, position one antenna at 45° as shown in Picture

Why Do Routers Have Multiple Antennas And How To Utilize Them

The antennas on your home router are usually dual or tri band, meaning each antenna sends and receives on a certain band 2.5GHz, 5Ghz. With three antennas, the router is usually emitting on two bands and receiving on one. If the router is advertised as dual band it means the antenna can transmit and receive both 2.4 and 5GHz.

What is the difference between a 2, 3 and 4-antenna router? Antenna count can be misleading antennas can be single-band or dual-band. Internal or external antenna placement is a matter of design choice, and while it is often perceived that a router can deliver better performance and coverage if it has several external rather than internal antennas built-in, in reality the difference is barely measurable .

MIMO Streams: It is the number of MIMO streams that affects range, with more being better. But you cant simply count antennas to know how many radio chains they have, you have to confirm it by reading the technical specifications of the device.

It takes two radio chains to reach signaling rates up to 300 megabits per second, and with a third radio chain you can reach signaling rates up to 450 megabits per second.

How To Position 4+ Router Antennas

The same principles apply for deciding how to position multiple router antennas. If your router is located in the middle of your home, the standard router setup should work: keep the center antenna vertical, and aim the antennas on either side, outward at a 45-to 60-degree angle. Adjust the angles for your specific needs you want the side of the antennas to be perpendicular to the direction in which your wireless devices will be sitting.

How Do Wifi Antennas Work

Wireless devices use radio waves to wirelessly communicate with each other. These wireless signals are nothing but electromagnetic waves containing packets of information. WiFi antennas convert the EM waves into electrical signals, and vice versa.

Wireless networking devices, such as wireless routers, smartphones, laptops, tablets, and hotspots, have receiving and transmitting antennas. The receiving antennas pick up on the EM waves containing packets of information and convert them into electrical signals for the device to process. In contrast, the transmitting antennas convert electrical signals into EM waves to transmit the information packets.

Types Of Wifi Antennas

How to increase WiFi speed? WiFi Antenna Position | Simple Tips and Tricks

There are two main types of WiFi antennas omnidirectional and directional.

Omnidirectional antennas radiate a signal at a 360-degree angle to deliver the widest signal coverage. Think of an omnidirectional antenna as an un-shaped incandescent lightbulb. When the lightbulb is on, it will evenly distribute light in every direction to illuminate an entire room.

Typically, the antennas range is much shorter than a directional antenna, but their coverage area is much larger. In other words, the lightbulb’s light wont extend as far as it would with a directional antenna, but it can illuminate an entire room. Omni antennas are often found indoors and outdoors.

Types of omnidirectional WiFi antennas:

  • Outdoor Omni Antennas: Used to improve WiFi signal outdoors. To successfully improve the wireless coverage outside, they are typically connected to a router, access point, or an outdoor access point.
  • Ceiling Dome Antennas: Connect to a WiFi router or access point via coaxial cable and are installed on the ceiling of a home, office building, or warehouse.
  • Rubber Duck Antennas or Dipole Antennas: Typically found on routers, access points, and WiFi USB adapters.
