Now that you know how the signals spread and radiate through the antennas, how do you position it so that that you get the best possible signal?
Step #1: Place Your Router in a Central Location
The first thing you want to do is to place your router or modem in a central location. Whats the point of properly positioning your antennas if the placement of your router or modem is not good anyway?
So, what you need to consider doing first is placing the router in a place where the entire area will be covered.
If you have two floors, the best router placement would be a few inches above lifted from the second floor. Signals travel downwards, not upwards.
Get the most out of it by placing it on the second floor.
Step #2: Determine the Spread of Signals
Do you want the signals to move sideward, or do you want them to move vertically? If you have multiple stories in your home, the best position for your WiFi router antenna/s would be horizontal.
This way, the signals would travel up and down evenly.
However, if you want the signals strong on just one floor, position it normally or vertically. This way, the signals that the antenna will transmit are going to be stronger horizontally.
One good tip to remember is that the signals are going to travel out of the body of the antenna, not the tip of it.

What Is The Difference Between A Router With One Two Or Three Antennas
The difference between a router with one, two, or three antennas is in the number of radio channels that each is capable of transmitting and receiving in. A router with 1 antenna receives/transmits over a single radio channel, a router with 2 antennas receives/transmits over two radio channels, while a router with 3 antennas receives/transmits over three radio channels.
This means that although Wi-Fi speed is dependent on many factors, the number of antennas on a router definitely impacts speed. Theoretically, a router with three antennas transmits/receives data over three spatial streams making it three times faster than one that uses a single antenna.

The antennas themselves make a difference, but does the positioning of them change their effectiveness?
If you have a router that has external antennas, then theoretically you have more control over how the WiFi signal is directed when you strategically position the antennas.
Personally, I have never noticed much of a difference in WiFi coverage by positioning the antennas in a particular way, but I also use WiFi in a tiny part of the house . After the installation, a long enough coaxial cable would need to be run through the building to connect it to the router or access point.

How To Aim A Yagi Directional Outside Antenna
Directional antennas, unlike omnidirectional antennas, must be aimed in order to receive the strongest signal from your cellular carrier. Here are some things to know ahead of time:
- Most directional antennas can cover about 15% of the horizon , so your aiming doesnt have to be laser-precise. Being off by a little will still work just fine.
- In almost all situations, the antenna should be level and even with the horizon. Do not attempt to aim the antenna up over a roof or nearby obstacles.
- You should attempt to aim the antenna before deciding where to permanently mount it. Once you know what direction the antenna should be pointed, try to find a location on the building so that the antenna is pointed away from the building. For example, if you need to aim your antenna North, you should mount the antenna on the North side of the building pointed away from it, not on the South side pointed over the building.
Even if you know exactly where your carriers tower is located, its still a good idea to go through this aiming process! The cell signal may not be coming directly from the tower either because of obstacles in the way or because the tower may not have an antenna aimed in your direction.
