Wifi Security Is Important
Recently, two Belgian researchers discovered a critical vulnerability in the Wi-Fi Protected Access II implementations on most wireless networking devices that use the protocol. The name of this vulnerability is KRACK , and it allows attackers to steal sensitive data, including passwords, credit card numbers, or chat messages.
According to Wired, Security analysts say its a tricky vulnerability to take advantage of, and major platforms like iOS, macOS, and Windows are either unaffected or have already been patched. But given the millions of routers and other IoT devices that will likely never see a fix, the true cost of KRACK could play out for years.
Software For Detecting Connected Devices On A Network
However, all this being said, there are other ways of finding out which devices are connected to your network, without logging into your router. That are quite a few programs which have been designed for this purpose, to scan your Wi-Fi network for connected devices.
Here are some programs you can use to do this:
- Nirsofts Wireless Network Watcher Free downloadable program that will scan your wireless network and list all connected devices, and list IP, MAC address and device name, exactly as a router would.
- SoftPerfect Network Scanner Another downloadable program that scans your network and lists connected devices. The free unlimited trial version only lists up to 10 connected devices though.
- AngryIP Scanner Another free program that scans local wireless network for devices.
- LANScan Local network scanning app for Apple devices only. Free to use.
- GlassWire Pro Premium program , but is much more advanced, showing you connected devices, bandwidth usage for each device and app, plus alerts whenever a new device connects to the Wi-Fi network especially useful for security conscious users.
Be aware though that with the free tools at least, they will only show you devices which are currently using the Wi-Fi . If you to view all devices which connect to a router, whether they are currently online or not, you are better off viewing the devices list on the router itself.

Check The List Of Devices Listed On The Window Versus The Devices In Your Home
Check the list of devices listed on the window versus the devices in your home. Computers, phones, tablets and other wireless devices will be listed by client name, IP address and MAC address.
- Take care not to inadvertently alter any settings while in the router interface. Close the browser window to ensure any changes are not saved.
- If you dont know the IP address of your router, try 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1 or consult the manufacturers documentation.
- If youve forgotten the username and password for your router, try the defaults for your router. Cisco and Linksys use a blank username and admin as the password. D-Link routers use admin as the username with a blank password. Netgear routers use a username of admin and also admin as the password.
- If the default username and password dont work, reset the the router to factory settings by pressing and holding the Reset button on the back of the router for 30 seconds. This will cause all information, including your networks name and password, to be reset.
- If you find devices you cant identify listed in the client list, change the password for your wireless network immediately. Choose a strong password that uses at least 12 characters and use a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers and symbols.

See Who Is Connected To Wifi With Your Router
Your best option is to check your wireless router. You can do it in just a few minutes and dont need to download any third-party apps to perform the check.
One thing you need before you do this is your wireless routers IP address.
How to Find Your Routers IP Address
In order to log into your routers web interface, youll need to open a browser on any of your devices that are connected to your router. Then open a new browser tab and type your routers IP address into the address bar.
Most routers have a default IP address of 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. If you tried typing both of them into your browser and neither of them works, you can find your routers IP address on the backside of your wireless router.
If youre still not sure what your router IP address is, there are a few more ways to find it. Some are more complicated than others.
The easy way to do it on Windows is by using the Command Prompt utility. When you launch the utility, type the ipconfig command and press Enter.
From there, youll find your IP address under Default Gateway.
On Mac, click on the WiFi icon in the menu bar and choose Open Network Preferences.
In your Network settings, choose Wi-Fi from the left-side menu and click Advanced in the bottom-right corner of the window.
Then choose the TCP/IP tab in the next window. There youll find your IP address under Router.

Use Https Browser Extension
There are two types of websites we access regularly. The first type follows HTTPS protocol that encrypts your activities on that website. Therefore, no one can know about your web activities. The second type follows HTTP protocol which is unsecured and it lets third parties log your web activities. Use an HTTPS browser extension like ‘HTTPS Everywhere’ to encrypt your activities on HTTP-based websites.

How To Hide Browser History From Wi
If you are using a public router or a friends router, you might wish to hide your browsing history from the router logs. Here are 3 ways to go about it:
1. Use a Proxy
The simplest way to hide your search is using a proxy server to keep the website addresses inaccessible for the owner. Surf the internet anonymously by following these 3 simple steps:
Step 1: Open a web browser and search for a web proxy server site such as proxify.com, freesurfproxy.org, and ultrafastproxy.com.
Step 2: Enter the URL address for the site you wish to access.
Step 3: You would be able to visit the site within the Web proxy.
However, the router logs will refer to the proxy sites you are using, so your search keeps on being tracked still.
2. Opt for Tor Network
The Tor network is a popular and anonymous way to browse online safely. Tor routes the internet traffic via random series of varying servers to hide the origin of your data as well as conceal your identity.
However, it can instigate doubts in case of huge firms or security organizations that you are working with.
3. Use a VPN server
A VPN server masks both your IP address and location by rerouting the traffic through an encrypted passage. The ISP cannot collect either your personal data or browsing information.
Moreover, adding a VPN to your router encrypts and protects all the devices connected to it.
