Very important: always sign-out of a guest Wi-Fi network. If you dont, you may leave your data exposed to hackers who set-up fake hotspots with the same name as the guest WiFi network, but with no password required, and your iPad might try to automatically connect and expose your info. Stay safe and always sign out at the end of your session on a guest WiFi network!

How To Use Mobile Hotspot Via Wifi

Once you know how to use phone as hotspot and have enabled it in Settings, connecting your other devices to it through WiFi is perhaps the most straightforward option:

  • On your Mac, open System Preferences Network, or click on the WiFi icon in the menu bar. On your iOS device, go to Settings Wi-Fi.

  • Find the WiFi network with your phones name and click to connect

  • Enter the password given to you on the Personal Hotspot screen. You can also change this password at any time.

Turn Your Computer Into A Hotspot

If you have a Mac computer or have updated your Windows 10 PC within the last five years, you have built-in functionalities for sharing data. However, if you have an older version of Microsofts operating system, things can get a bit more complicated.

    On Windows

This OS debuted its integrated hotspot feature in 2016, with the release of the Anniversary update ///” rel=”nofollow”> version 1607) of Windows 10. If you have that or a later edition, you can share your computers internet connection by going to Settings, Network & Internet, and clicking on Home is where the Wi-Fi connects automatically. But sometimes events out of our control, like power outages and disastrous winter storms, happen and prevent us from connecting to the rest of the world.

In those cases, if you can refresh your Instagram feed, you can create a hotspot to share your precious cellular data with other devices. You may not be able to watch Netflix, play your favorite cloud-based video games, and livestream your dire situation to your friends on TikTok. But itll be enough to stay informed, ask for help if necessary, and keep your spirit up with memes on Reddit or Twitter.

Keep in mind that the data you share will eat away from your monthly quota. Once those gigabytes run out, youll either be cut off completely or stuck with snail-speed browsing, which only allows basic functions such as messaging, emailing, and loading simple web pages.

  • Joining a wireless hotspot is easy, too. If you are signed into the secondary device with your Apple ID, it may detect it as a personal hotspot and prompt you to join it automatically. If you don’t own the device, or it does not automatically prompt you to join the network, you can follow the steps outlined below.

Turn On An Iphone Hotspot Via Settings

In older versions of iOS it’s not possible to turn on a Hotspot from inside Control Centre. The Hotspot could only be set up within settings. Hotspots can still be turned on vis Settings in iOS 13, but it works in a slightly different way.

    In iOS 13

  • Open Settings
  • Tap on Personal Hotspot . This will automatically turn on your Hotspot in iOS 13.
  • New options in iOS 13 include the new option to ‘Share Personal Hotspot with members of Family Sharing’ and ‘Allow Others to Join’. If you want to create a Hotspot you will need to Allow Others To Join – even if you aren’t planning to let others join. Your Hotspot will automatically become ‘discoverable’ but others will need to enter a password in order to join your Hotspot.
  • You, and anyone you are Family Sharing with in iOS 13, will automatically be able to log onto your Hotspot without needing this password: hence the new Family Sharing tab. Tap on that and you will see the option to allow other family members to join your Hotspot. You can choose between Ask for Approval or Automatic, to determine how they will join your Hotspot. You and your family members will be identified by iCloud collaterals.

    Pre iOS 13

  • Open the Settings app, then tap on Mobile Data/Cellular Data.
  • Tap Personal Hotspot, and set Personal Hotspot to On.
  • If Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth are off, iOS will ask if you want to turn them back on. We’d recommend doing so – without them, the hotspot will be limited to USB.

  • Tap Wi-Fi Password and enter a password. This will be the password you enter after tapping on the hotspot name in the list of Wi-Fi networks on the other device.
  • Take note of the name of the hotspot so you can provide others with both the Wi-Fi network name and password when they wish to get online using your connection.

    Things To Keep In Mind

If you have data limits on your contract or plan, youll need to be careful when using your iPhone 11s Personal Hotspot connection.

If you are pairing an iPad to your iPhone 11 for use on a long train journey for instance and you watch hours of Netflix or , it will burn through a lot of data.

Most data plans for iPhone are fairly comprehensive, but if youre on a 5GB or 10GB monthly data allowance, youll want to be very careful when using Hotspot on your iPhone.

Things like YouTube and Netflix will burn through more data than reading articles online, so be mindful of what youre doing.

If you have an unlimited data plan, however, you can use Hotspot as much as you like for as long as you like.

This is one of the main reasons why I always go for Unlimited Data Plans yes, theyre more expensive but it pays dividends in the long run.

For instance, a few years back, when I moved house, I was without internet for a week or so. But because I have an Unlimited Data plan from Three, I just paired my iMac to my iPhone and used its 4G connection to work in my office.

Over the course of a week and half, I used almost 150GB of data. But because my data plan is truly unlimited, it didnt cost me anything.

If I was on a 10GB plan, I would have got an enormous bill at the end of the month.

    Set Or Change Your Wi

You need to set a Wi-Fi password in order to set up a Personal Hotspot. To change the Wi-Fi password, go to Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot or Settings > Personal Hotspot, then tap the Wi-Fi password.*

Choose a Wi-Fi password that’s at least eight characters long and use ASCII characters. If you use non-ASCII characters, other devices will be unable to join your Personal Hotspot. Non-ASCII characters include characters in Japanese, Russian, Chinese, and other languages. ASCII characters include:

    • All the letters in English, both lowercase and uppercase
    • The digits 0 through 9
    • Some punctuation marks

    * When you change your password, any connected devices will be disconnected.
