How To Speed Up Wifi Internet

Install A Clear Cache Plugin

Speed Up WiFi Internet Connection

If youve never heard of a cache on your internet browser, nows the time to find out what it is. As you visit websites and enter information, browsers collect little bits of information about you, often in the form of cookies. Marketers use your data to send you relevant ads for stuff you might want to buy based on your browsing behavior. If youve ever seen the same ad follow you around the internet, then youre already familiar with this concept.

To get rid of all those cookies and trackers, you have to clear the cache on your browser. You can do this manually, but its easier to install a plugin like Clear Cache for Chrome so you can do it in one click. Make it a habit to clear your cache every day so all that accumulated data doesnt affect your internet speeds.

Change To Google Public Dns

This may or may not increase your internet speed because it all depends on the DNS server you are using. If you are using the DNS server which location is quite near to your location, changing it may not help but if your DNS server is situated far away from your location, changing to Google Public DNS would help because it is one of the fastest public DNS which has servers around the world that keep responding to the requests.

I am not writing the full guide about changing the DNS on your PC because I have already written a blog post about it which you can read by .

Make Your Router Faster With A New Antenna

A simple way to make a router faster is to buy a new antenna.

The antenna on most consumer-grade routers is awful. An amplified aftermarket antenna is a great fix and a simple way to improve signal quality without needing a new device. Powered and amplified aftermarket options start at around $15 and go all the way up into the low $100s.

Plug-in range extenders are a bit more expensive, but they act as a powered antenna and wireless repeater in one. They can offer a significant improvement to homes with dead zones or signal degradation, but your mileage may vary.

However, be sure to check local wireless broadcast laws before picking up a beefy antenna. In some jurisdictions, amplifying your Wi-Fi signal is illegal .

Tip #: Change Your Wireless Routers Channel

How do I interpret my WiFi speed test results?

In tip #3, we briefly mentioned wireless router channels. Wireless routers will broadcast their signal on a specific wavelength, or channel. Many routers have 14 available channels, although some do have more. Current wireless routers typically operate between the 2400 to 2500 Megahertz radio bands. With the channels split into 14 parts between that, there is a lot of overlap in all of the channels except for three: 1, 6, and 11. These channels have some, but far less overlap.

If you live in a suburban or urban community, theres a good chance your devices can pick up multiple wifi signals from your neighbors. Most routers will automatically pick an available channel, but may not pick up the most efficient or least-crowded one. And theres a good chance youll have a lot of routers sending off signals and sharing the same channel.

The inherent problem here is that if your wireless router is using, for example, channel 1, and your neighbor is using channel 2, youll get significant interference. Each channel heading toward 2500MHz causes interference for the lower channel.

Most routers will now allow you to manually change the channel its broadcasting on. In an ideal world, everyone would be on the same channel or on channels that dont interact so thered be less interference, but that would require you to collude with your neighbors. Instead, try shifting to channel 1, 6 or 11 using your routers settings.

As an experiment, I tested my speed while on channel 7:

Change Your Network Name And Password

A lot of otherwise tech-savvy people still use the default username and password on their router. Even intermediate hackers are capable of hacking relatively secure networks with non-default passwords.

Using a strong Wi-Fi password is equally important. While you might do a great job of splitting your devices up into separate bands, updating your firmware, and switching channels during high traffic periods, it’s all an exercise in futility if your neighbors are piggybacking your Wi-Fi and using it to torrent movies all day.

Negotiate With Your Internet Service Provider

Even if theres only one ISP in your town, it probably has multiple plans. If you dont like your speed, your provider might offer a higher speed plan that would better serve you. Yeah, we know its no fun to pay more money every month, but if your internet is driving you crazy and theres no better provider in sight, it might be the best option you have.

We’ve got your back. Try these three tips for calling your internet customer service. They’ll help you keep your cool and might even give you an edge when it comes to negotiating.

Check The Cabling And Do A Line Test

If all of this fails its time to contact your Internet Service Provider and modem company and ask them for a line test and investigation.

This may mean that a worker from the company will be sent out to your house, and this can cost an additional fee.

But, you might discover the root of your problem. For instance, a worker could find that the wires in your roof are almost totally chewed away and need replacing. This would be nearly impossible to figure out without a proper investigation.

Thats a wrap.

We hope these easy tips showed you how to increase your internet speedfrom a snails pace to blazing fast!

Tip #: Find A Software Solution

How to Speed up WiFi/Internet on Windows 11 PC (BOOST WIFI SPEED)

Theres a chance that software, not hardware, is at the heart of your internet problems. Software issues can range from old firmware running on your router to viruses infecting your computer.

You may want to try the following software fixes:

Check your router for firmware updates

Your routers manufacturer may have firmware updates waiting that need to be manually installed. If your router has a touchscreen, you can check for firmware updates there. Otherwise, you may need to log into your routers settings using a web browser and check to see if there are any available firmware updates. In most cases, however, your manufacturer will push these firmware updates automatically and theyll install without your direct input.

Update your web browser

Are you using the latest version of your internet browser? If not, youll want to update to the newest version available. Alternatively, you might want to explore various other web browsers to see which one might offer you the fastest, most secure browsing experience.

Heres how different browsers can affect your speed and speed test results:

Clear your web browser cache

Your browser stores cookies and other files to help you load sites faster. However, the cache can also be the reason you might find slower page loading results or loading errors. Clearing cache can help load pages and services faster in the long run.

Browsing slowing to a crawl, the inability to stream, dropped Wi-Fi signals, wireless dead zonesevery one of these problems is maddening in a world where getting online has become, for some, as necessary as breathing.

If you feel like your Wi-Fi has gotten sluggish, there are many tools you can use to test the speed of your internet. There are also a few tricks you can try to troubleshoot your network issues. However, if the only way you can get decent reception is by standing next to your wireless router, these simple tips can help optimize your network.

Is Your Bandwidth Insufficient Lets Test It

If you think you have a low bandwidth problem, run a speed test and compare the results with the numbers advertised by your ISP. If you only have one device connected to the internet and you are not downloading any files, the results should be close to what you were promised. However, if you tend to have multiple devices connected at once and love streaming videos and sharing files with your friends, it may be that you need more bandwidth.

Get A Different Internet Provider

Sometimes your internet provider is the biggest problem. We admit this tip isnt necessarily easy or simple, but it is practical and might even be cheaper for you in the long run. If your internet provider is going to give you a slow connection no matter how many other tips you try, consider a swap.

Most areas have only a couple Internet Service Providers available, so it should be a pretty quick check to see if the other provider that serves your area has better prices for faster speeds. You can skim this roundup of best ISPs and check this month’s internet deals to figure out if an alternative provider might give you a better price.

Switching providers should be a last resort, but if you try the other tips on our list and your speed is still sluggish, it might be time to make a change. Especially if youre using satellite internet and find out you can switch to cable or DSL.

Use An Ethernet Cable Instead Of Wi

Although this can be a hassle, most computers and laptops have an ethernet port that you can use to create a physical connection with your router. A standard Cat 5e cable is capable of 1,000 Mbps, around double a 2.4 GHz connection in ideal conditions.

Not only are the speeds better, but using an ethernet cord is also a good way to get around network interference and distance limits. You can easily reach 300 feet with an ethernet cable without your speeds decreasing.

Limit The Number Of Users

Increase upload speed

The greater the number of users connected to your network, the slower it becomes.

The most practical method to reserve more bandwidth for yourself is to reduce the bandwidth available to other devices.

This can be accomplished by navigating to the router’s settings. This will not only save you money from overusing the internet but also result in faster speeds for you.

Moreover, when uploading any video or files, you should turn off the bandwidth-hogging programs to prevent some of them from eating up your Internet to enjoy faster download or upload speeds.

Computer Woes: Spyware Viruses And Other Programs

How 6 simple Windows 10 steps speed up your WiFi and internet

The health of your computer can affect your Internet connection. Spyware and viruses can definitely cause problems, but your Internet connection speed can also be affected by add-on programs, the amount of memory the computer has, hard disk space and condition, and the programs that are running.

Two of the most frequent causes of poor Internet performance are spyware and viruses. Spyware can slow your system by interfering with your browser and monopolizing your Internet connection. Spyware monitors your Internet use and keystrokes, which adds delays. The problem is compounded when there are multiple spyware programs running at the same time. If the problem is severe enough, you can lose connectivity altogether. To get your Internet performance back, you should regularly run an antispyware program to clean out any spyware infestation.

Computer viruses can also cause poor Internet performance. When a virus infects a computer, it installs computer code which will attempt to propagate itself, usually by sending copies of itself through email. Some viruses can multiply at the rate of hundreds of email messages per minute, which leaves little computing power and Internet connection bandwidth for anything else. Viruses often don’t give any obvious indication that they’re running, so it’s best to run your antivirus software at all times.

Check Out Antenna Upgrades And Omnidirectional Antennas

Another alternative is to upgrade your antenna. Some router models are equipped with a visible antenna, and high-speed internet customers with these models are in luck. Why? Because some third-party manufacturers produce replacement antenna with more robust signals than the ones provided by your cable and internet provider. Some antennas are omnidirectional, so their positioning is irrelevant to maximizing your hardware upgrade you wont even have to angle the antenna to boost your Wi-Fi signal.
