How to tell if WiFi Networks around you are 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz & why it matters

Your UBB router that is used with our wireless broadband, 4G broadband, and fibre broadband, uses radio frequencies to provide your cell phones, laptops, TVs, and more with a wifi connection. These frequencies are split into the 2.4GHz band and 5GHz band which you will see after your wifi name when connecting. They both come with pros and cons! So read below for which one may suit you best.

What Connection Is Better Than 24ghz & 5ghz Combined

Using an ethernet cable directly to the device like tv or computer! A wired connection is always faster and more stable than wifi connection. So whenever its possible connect your device directly to the router! But in saying that its not always possible. How to tell if you have 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz WiFi network

If you’re able to use most of your devices near your router, 5 GHz is your best choice to take advantage of higher speeds. Similarly, if you’re doing a lot of high-bandwidth activities online, such as gaming or videoconferencing, it’s best to use this frequency and move as close as possible to the router. Or if, as stated above, you’re in an apartment or condo with many other units surrounding you, 5 GHz will help you avoid wireless congestion.

Check Your Signal Strength

If the signal isnt strong enough, you wont be able to connect reliably to your Wi-Fi network no matter which channel you choose. Again, you can use a Wi-Fi analyzer app to determine your signal strength the closer to 10 dBm, the stronger the signal. A stronger signal gives you a better chance of a reliable Wi-Fi connection. The strongest signal strength will usually be a few feet from your access point, but not right next to it.

If you have a weak Wi-Fi signal, try these things:

  • Move your access point, if you can, to reduce the number of walls or other obstacles that are between your access point and your PC. The fewer the walls and other obstacles the better.

  • Move your PC closer to the access point if you can. Closer is better, but not right next to it.

  • Move the access point towards the middle of your home or room if you can, and higher if possible. Placing it in a corner or under a desk can reduce your Wi-Fi signal strength.

  • Check for things that can cause interference .

  • Check how your device is oriented when using Wi-Fi. Your position can cause some signal loss.

If moving closer to the access point or moving the access point itself isnt an option, you can try a network extender to improve your Wi-Fi signal. Network extenders are usually small devices that you can plug into an electrical outlet anywhere in your home.

Can You Use Both Wi

This really depends on what you mean by the same time.

If you have a dual-band router, it can provide both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi at the same time.3 But your device itself will only connect to one Wi-Fi frequency at a time. Although its a sweet idea, your device cant use both simultaneously. Youll have to switch between both.

How To Quickly Find Out Your Wi

Are you wondering if your home internet network is really running at the speeds you are paying for? Here’s how to find out.

You have your laptop connected to a Wi-Fi network with full bars. That’s great. It’s not the bars that matter though, but the actual speed of that connection. Here’s a quick way to find how fast your computer’s current Wi-Fi connection is and other information about that connection.

On a Mac, hold the Option key then click on the Wi-Fi icon at the top right area on the screen. A menu will appear: Under the current Wi-Fi network it shows a host of information about the current connection, including the IP addresses, MAC address, the Wi-Fi standard and the connection speed, which is shown as Tx Rate.

Holding the Option key while clicking the Wi-Fi icon will give you a host of information on your Mac’s current Wi-Fi connection.

On a Windows computer, it’s a bit more involved but still easy. First right-click on the Wi-Fi icon at the lower right corner area of the screen, then click on Open Network and Sharing Center.

Next, click on the Wi-Fi connection, which will open up the status window that shows you the current connection speed among other things. And then you can click on Details to find out about the IP address and other info.

How To Separate The 24ghz And 5ghz Signals On Your Wifi Router

Modified on: Wed, 14 Jul, 2021 at 2:22 PM

Wireless internet, or WiFi, works by using a specific “band” of frequencies to send information to and from your devices. The 2.4GHz band is useful for connecting to the router from a long distance or through lots of walls and obstructions. The 5GHz band allows for a much faster internet connection. Most modern routers just combine both of these signals into one WiFi network. This is usually a good thing, but when you are connecting a device that can only use 2.4GHz, the ‘dual band’ WiFi network can confuse the device.

Green Feathers WiFi cameras, most ‘smart’ devices and devices such as Sonos and Alexa use 2.4GHz signals, which can cause connection issues for some users.

This guide shows you how to solve this problem and get your camera connected to your device. There are 3 solutions to try:

1. Move away from the router

Move further away from the router when setting up the camera, but not so you are out of WiFi range. This increases the chance of your mobile or tablet picking up the 2.4GHz signal as it can penetrate walls and obstructions more effectively than the 5GHz signal.

2. Change the settings on your router*

If you are mildly technical or willing to have a go, try logging into your router and changing the settings. It might be helpful to look online for ‘how to enable 2.4GHz on ‘.

Next finish setting up your camera. Then afterwards you can go back to your router settings and change them back to the original dual band set up.

The two WiFi bands have recently been combined into one with the Comcast gateway devices. If you are not using any Xfi Pods, you can separate the 2.4 and the 5.0 bands and give them two different broadcast names / SSID’s

Associate the lightbulb with the 2.4 band’s SSID and password.

Is It Better To Connect To 24 Ghz Or 5 Ghz Wi

It really depends on your situation. 2.4 GHz can travel further, which means the signal can go through walls and solid objects more easily. This means your device will have an easier time connecting. Its also the signal thats been around for the longest time, so many devices can connect to it.

However, sometimes the 2.4 GHz bandwave is overused. Theres a bunch of devices that use this frequency, such as microwaves, any bluetooth devices, and even wireless landline phones.

Having lots of devices connected to the same wave of Wi-Fi can cause more disruptions.

The great thing about 5 GHz is that theres typically fewer devices using it. If you can connect your device to this frequency then chances are youll have fewer glitches. However, keep in mind that the signal from your router wont reach as far as it would at 2.4 GHz.

Take our free speed test to see if your internet is fast enough to meet your needs, whether youre working from home or streaming Netflix.

But What One Should You Connect To

How can I tell if my Wi

Well, it depends! A 2.4GHz connection travels farther at lower speeds, while 5 GHz frequencies provide faster speeds at a shorter range. Whether you choose 2.4GHz or 5GHz will depend on where and how you use your WiFi connection most.

A lot of electronic devices and appliances use the 2.4GHz frequency, including microwaves, baby monitors, and garage door openers. If you have many of these in your home, or if you live in apartments or condos surrounded by other people, that 2.4GHz band is likely to be congested, which can damage speed and signal quality.

How Do You Change Frequency Settings

Whether you choose 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, you need to make sure your wireless is enabled on your modem/router and set to use the same frequency. Check your specific model of router for compatibility and frequency capabilities.

With a dual-band router, you can set it to transmit at both frequencies concurrently. In this case, you typically have two networks that appear in your network list, with identical names except for a “5G” or “2.4G” at the end. You can then choose to connect each individual device to either network.

On most newer modems, there is also a way to find the best WiFi channel for your environment and then change the channel as needed in the modem’s wireless settings. This way you can make the most of the different capabilities of 2.4 GHz vs. 5GHz WiFi.

Type Of Device And How Its Being Used

The 2.4GHz band uses longer waves, which makes it better suited for longer ranges or transmission through walls and other solid objects. Ideally, you should use the 2.4GHz band to connect devices for low bandwidth activities like browsing the Internet.

On the other hand, 5GHz is the best suited for high-bandwidth devices or activities like gaming and streaming HDTV.

The idea is to spread out your devices over the two bands so that theres less competition for the same channels. Separating your personal and Internet of Things devices can also help your WiFi security. By splitting your devices between 2.4GHz and 5GHz, you can maximize your networks performance.

I See Two Or More Network

How to Check if your Computer Supports 2.4 or 5GHz WiFi

If you see two or more networks, one of them may be a 5 GHz band. Look at thenames of your Wi-Fi network.

  • A 2.4 GHz network name may be ended with “24G”, “2.4”, or”24″, for example, Homenetwork24G
  • A 5 GHz network name may be ended with “5G” or “5”, for example: Homenetwork5
  • I don’t see any network name associated with 2.4 or 5. That means your Internet Service Provider may have set one of your network bands as”Guest” or another name. To find out your network band, you need to log in to your Wi-Fi router. If you haven’t changed your default user name and password for your Wi-Fi router, here’s the login information for some router brands. If you have other router brands, please search on the internet for its login information.
