Ghz Is Becoming The Standard

RELATED:What’s the Difference Between 2.4 and 5-Ghz Wi-Fi ?

Weve talked about the difference between 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi here, so if you arent familiar with the different bands, you should read that first.

Most modern routers are dual band, which mean they contain the ability to broadcast on both of these bands. Odds are pretty good that if you bought your Wi-Fi router or compatible device in the last five years, it has support for 5GHz networksand in fact, if its an 802.11ac router, it requires the 5GHz band for that super-fast connection. Only super-cheap gadgets released in the last few years, like some of the e-ink Amazon Kindles or budget Android tablets, lack support for N or AC 5GHz connections.

RELATED:What is 802.11ac, and Do I Need It?

Not only are 5GHz and 802.11ac devices easy to come by, theyre getting cheaper, too. Even the cable/Wi-Fi router combos supplied by ISPs, which are usually whitebox hardware built by the lowest bidder, probably have at least 5GHz N support. You can find a standard router that supports 5GHz AC Wi-Fi for under fifty bucks, and adapters for desktops or older laptops are thick on the ground.

5GHz may be faster, but high-frequency radio waves cant travel as far as low-frequency signals, and they cant penetrate as well through solid walls and appliancesthats just a function of the physics of radio waves. So wouldnt disabling 2.4GHz cause other problems with range and interference?

Not necessarily: the engineers and software designers behind the newer standards have found ways to compensate. Both N and AC Wi-Fi devices support beamforming, a technique for sending radio signals in a specific direction for a cleaner, longer connection, rather than a 360-degree coverage area that doesnt account for the physical location of devices.

In addition to beamforming for a stronger point-to-point connection, N and AC standards allow for more individual channels within the Wi-Fi spectrum, and AC has wider channels with support for up to 160MHz. In laymans terms, that means its easier for multiple high-frequency Wi-Fi devices to connect to the same router with less interference. Both N and AC standards support MU-MIMO for multiple simultaneous data transmissions as well. You might find that disabling 2.4GHz doesnt cause any range or interference problems at allthe only way to know is to try it out.

Find Your Router Login Details

If you have direct access to your router, this is easy. Theres usually a sticker on the back that has the router login IP, admin and password. Find them and note them all down itll look something like this:

If you dont have direct access to the router, then you can Google your router make and model if you know it, or perhaps your ISP and router, and it should be possible to find your router login and admin/password, as long as they havent been changed from the defaults. If theyve been changed, then youll have to get the details off the person who knows or do a full factory reset of the router to reset all login/password details to default.

In any event, the router login IP is usually, or in North America and Europe, though it can vary.

How Do I Disable The 5ghz Wifi On My Router

We have AT& T Fiber and for some reason it wants device to connect on the 5GHz band. We have at least 2 devices that only work on 2.4GHz. I’ve looked everywhere in the router settings and can’t see how to disable the 5GHz. Does anyone know how to do this please?

Go to the wifi settings of your gateway to turn it off. It should be pretty obvious.

Which gateway by the way?

Thanks for answering. It was not possible to just turn off the 5GHz – don’t ask me why but that option is nowhere to be found. I’m using an ARRIS gateway, I believe.

Interestingly, it showed that it was broadcasting on 2.4GHz and 5GHz but nothing was connected on 2.4, only 5. This meant that the devices that only operated on 2.4 were unable to connect. After 3 complete system restarts, it finally went back to the way it had been and all systems are go.

I don’t see the logic but I seldom do.

Re: How Do I Turn Off 5ghz Wifi On Vodafone Hub

Hi – with the updates on our routers, changing channels is no longer a feature via our self-serve options as our routers will pick the best available channel automatically, to help you with getting the most out of our service.

To activate this service, please complete these steps from the router home page – in your web address bar. Using the login details from the white sticker on the back of your router, go to Wi-Fi and then General Settings. Please ensure ‘Split Wi-Fi bands’ is set to off.

When going to Expert Mode from the drop down box and then Wi-Fi from the main menu, please go to Wi-Fi Settings > Band Selection > More Options > Select Channel. If this isn’t set to Auto, select Auto from the drop down menu and click Update Channel for both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz.Then in Diagnostics and Cures, if the status shows ‘ACS state should be enabled’ select the Enable ACS button. Your router will then work to ensure you’re using the optimal settings.

Please let me know if this helps.

Find And Turn Off 5 Ghz Wi

This is where router menu structures start to diverge a little depending on the brand and model, so there isnt a one size fits all set of menu steps to proceed through, since there are so many different routers. But basically, you are looking for an option within Wireless Settings to disable the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band, or disable Dual Band.

Once logged into your router, you are looking for Wireless Settings, Wi-Fi, or something similar. Or possibly go to Advanced Settings then to Wireless

Here are some examples of how the setting might be handled/displayed by different routers:

Example #1 There might a toggle/switch/option somewhere to set on or off. Or it may say Use 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands or something similar.

However its worded, make sure it is set to Off, or the box to allow splitting of Wi-Fi bands is unchecked . This should turn off the 5 GHz band and just leave the 2.4 GHz band in use.

Sometimes, to disable 5 GHz you might have to quickly Enable separate/dual/split bands to divide them, and then turn off/disable the 5 GHz band individually, like above. You should then only be using the 2.4 GHz band.

Example #2 Other routers might have 2 separate boxes to enable the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands. In this case, just make sure the 2.4 GHz box is checked and 5 GHz box is unchecked/toggled off to disable 5 GHz and just use 2.4 GHz.

A nice simple example of this type of menu :

Heres another example of this kind of menu for dual band for a UK ISP:

Does Turning Off 5ghz Improve Wifi

Modifying or disabling the 5 GHz configuration, will not help with interference, within the 2.4 GHz frequency range. If you have 2.4 GHz performance problems, only changing the 2.4 GHz channel configuration, or reducing the interference that exists within that frequency range will help with that issue.

This is a common troubleshooting step on the BT Community, yet I cannot find a guide to link to. I have made one to link to. Please remove if not allowed.

BT Smart Hub 2 Disabling 5Ghz Band

Many devices require a 2.4Ghz signal, and the bands cannot be split on the Smart Hub 2, therefore the only solution is to temporarily disable and re-enable it.

1) Open a new web browser on a device connected to your Hub and type in the address bar. This will open the Hub Manager.

3) This will open the Wireless Settings page. Select Change settings

4) Enter the Admin password. This is found on the back of the router and on the removable card. Click OK

7) Click ‘Yes’ at the warning prompt.

Wait for devices to re-connect.

Repeat the steps above, but toggle it to ‘ON’ to enable it again.

Because iPhones and iPads both use the iOS system, they store mobile network options in the same place. Therefore, you can use the same steps for disabling 5G on an iPhone or iPad.

To disable 5G networking on your iOS device, go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data and tap LTE. After an update, your device may revert to using 5G automatically. Be sure to go back and change it to LTE again in that case.

Switching away from the 5G mobile network is different from switching away from the 5GHz connection on your router.

The difference is mainly that 5GHz is a measure of speedhow much information can be processed per secondwhile 5G is a mobile data network that some routers can distribute to 5G devices.
