Conduct A Speed Test On Your Computer Phone Or Tablet
Whether you install an app or use a website, it’s a good idea to run the test a few times to get a sense of your connection’s performance. Each test will take under a minute to complete, offering the download and upload speed results.
According to the FCC, this is how fast of a connection you’ll need based on your usage.
The Federal Communications Commission for household broadband speeds based on the number of devices and people connected to the same network. Basic service ranges from 3Mbps to 8Mbps, and will be good enough for light usage . Medium service is classified as 12 to 25Mbps and is best for up to three users or devices in use at the same time with medium to high usage depending on the activity. Finally, advanced service is any connection speed over 25Mbps and is best suited for those with more than four users or devices using the connection at the same time for more than light usage.
Your internet connection’s speed will vary based on time of day, the number of devices connected and in use, along with other factors. I suggest running multiple speed tests over the course of a day or two, tracking the results, to gauge your connection’s true speed.
A speed test is a quick and easy way to see if something’s wrong.
How To Fix It When You Have No Internet Connection
Follow these troubleshooting steps when you have Wi-Fi but no internet.
Reboot your router and modem. The first step in troubleshooting most tech problems, and especially networking hardware issues, is to restart. Rebooting the router and modem flushes the memory and resets background or lingering problems. You’ll need to log in to your router as admin.
Rebooting is different than resetting. Rebooting shuts down and then starts back up the router/modem.

See If Theres An Internet Outage
It could be that youre not the only one whose internet is down. Run a quick search on Twitter or Google to see if anyone else in your area is reporting internet outages or connectivity issues from your provider. You can also find information about internet shutdowns on the website Down Detector, or you can call up your internet service provider to investigate.
If the internet is indeed down in your area but you still need internet, you can use your cell phone as a mobile hotspot to access Wi-Fi. You can also go outside in search of a public hotspot to connect to. Take a look at our Wi-Fi hotspot guide for more details.
If youre in no rush for internet access, then open up a book or old-timey print magazine to keep yourself entertained as you wait until the network is back up.
Find My Wifi Name On Macos
If you are connected to a WiFi access point, you should be able to see your WiFi status in the Menu bar.
If you have tethered your computer to your iPhone to get an internet connection, the icon will look slightly different:
Simply clicking on the WiFi icon will reveal a list of some of the possible WiFi Access Points to connect to.
The name of the WiFi that you are currently connected to has a tick next to it.
If you don’t see an WiFi Name with a tick next to it then you aren’t connected to a WiFi connection. If your computer can still access the internet, you might also have a LAN/Ethernet cable connected or you might be connected via a USB Dongle.
If the WiFi icon is missing from the menu bar then it’s probably disabled in your Preferences. Click the Apple Menu -> System Preferences. Click on Network. Tick Show Wi-Fi Status in menu bar and it should appear.

Why Isnt My Internet Working
There are a lot of possible reasons for why your internet isnt working. Your router or modem may be out of date, your DNS cache or IP address may be experiencing a glitch, or your internet service provider could be experiencing outages in your area. The problem could be as simple as a faulty Ethernet cable.
To figure out the issue, try rebooting your device and your modem and router, and then call your ISP to see if its experiencing problems on its end.
Which Is My Wi
If youre not able to access the router easily, you can still use another technique to work out which one is your network. Essentially, the strongest signal in your house is always usually the one coming from your router. So, even if the person who deals with all the technology in your home has put the router out of reach, youll be able to track it down by walking around your house with your device showing the available networks.
On an Android phone this is achieved by swiping down from the top of the screen to open the Notifications pane. Youll see a Wi-Fi icon which youll need to tap and hold. This will then open the Wi-Fi section. iPhone and iPad users can go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
Now, look for the signal that is the strongest. If you find it at an adjoining wall to your neighbour then its possible that youre picking up theirs from the other side of the wall, so maybe keep going until youve explored the various rooms and can judge which network remains the most potent for the majority of locations.
Of course, youll need to know the password if you want to connect, so you may still need to access the router to find out. Or speak to whoever looks after the IT in your household to provide you with the help otherwise the only option is to turn off the Wi-Fi setting and rely on your mobile data plan until they can provide the necessary details.

Do A Factory Reset Of Your Router
Kind of like turning it off and on again taken to the logical extreme, this will return your router to its out-of-the-box factory settings. If your router has only recently been causing problems, this just might solve the problem, but if you made any changes to your router settings, these will all be lost, too.
Its fairly easy to do. Every router will have a reset button, which is sometimes hidden in a tiny hole in the back, which youll need a pin or something to reach. Find it, press it, and hold it for ten to twenty seconds. This will do the trick. Give the router time to set itself up and see if that fixes the problem.
How To Check Which Apps Are Using Your Internet Connection In Windows 10
To see which apps are communicating over the network:
If you notice your Internet suddenly slowing to a crawl, chances are that an app on your PC is using your bandwidth in the background. Using Task Manager, you can check which apps are communicating over your local network, which might help you figure out where the bandwidth is going to.
Begin by launching Task Manager using the Ctrl+Shift+Esc keyboard shortcut. If Task Manager opens to its simplified view, click the “More details” button in the bottom-left to expand the window.
You’ll arrive at the Processes tab, which provides information on every app that’s running on your PC including Windows internal processes. The rightmost column of the table displays the current network usage of each app, in Mbps. Click the column header to sort the running processes by bandwidth usage, highest-to-lowest.
You should remember that this column shows local network activity, not Internet usage. In other words, if you’re backing up files to a network-connected hard drive, that program will be communicating at several hundred Mbps on your network, but won’t be using any Internet bandwidth.

How To Test Ping
During the ping test, the device sends a small data package over the network to the test server on the internet. When the server receives this package, it will send it back to the device, completing the roundtrip. The time it takes the data package to complete the roundtrip is called latency, also known as ping. To achieve an accurate reading, multiple ping tests are conducted consecutively, with the final result being the average of all these tests.
All these are automatically handled for you when using Speedcheck. But you should take one crucial aspect into account to test speed accurately. Choose the right tool. This depends on the device you want to use, being a phone or tablet, or a computer. To check internet speed on a computer, use your browser and the app on this website. To achieve accurate results on mobile devices, you should download our iOS or Android app, respectively. This is especially important when running a WiFi speed test. Because browsers on mobile devices have poor performance, we suggest using a mobile app written in native code to ensure the most accurate speed test results.
Secure Your Wifi Network
In a situation where you need to give someone access to your local network, theres a safe way to do that. At the same time, if youre worried about someone hijacking your WiFi, its time to secure your network. Doing this will keep anyone from using your internet connection to perform malicious acts. Itll also give you peace of mind.

Run A Network Diagnostic
Network diagnostics, or troubleshooting, has a bad but not unfair reputation for being moderately useless. But theyre easy to do, harmless, and will occasionally solve the problem for you, so its worth giving it a go anyway.
For Windows 10
Go to your Apple menu and click System Preferences.
Click Assist Me, then click the Diagnostics button. Thatll open the Network Diagnostics tool.
Click Continue and follow the instructions.
Macs can also run a much more in-depth diagnostic, which might solve your problem.
If youve got anything plugged into your mac other than a mouse, keyboard, display, the power cord, and an ethernet cable, unplug that stuff.
Turn your Mac off, then on, and immediately press and hold the D key.
Hold it until you see a screen that asks for your language. Pick one, preferably one you understand.
Itll spend a few minutes testing some things. Follow the on-screen instructions.
For Android & iOS
If your Android or iPhone wont connect to Wi-Fi, theres a spot of bad news: neither mobile operating systems come with built-in network diagnostic tools. But you can download apps that will serve the same purpose. For Android, try Network Analyzer, and for iPhone, consider using Pingify.
How Can I Find My Wi
There are a couple of ways to work out which network is your home one. The first, and the most reliable, is to go to your router and look for the card that identifies your network name and password. This may just be a sticker on the router itself that has this information printed on it, just in case the removable card gets lost . Sometimes the Network will be called an SSID instead, but it means the same thing.
In our example we show a picture of the back of a BT Smart Hub, one of the most popular routers used in the UK, but youll find the same network information on the back of any router, no matter which internet service provider you use.
As you can see, the Wireless Network is listed at the top with the name underneath . Under this youll see the password or network key. When entering that code, note that its all case-sensitive, so be sure to use upper- and lower-case letters to match those on the sticker. Weve blurred some of the letters on our example as a security precaution, but yours should all be legible.
