Not all places are equally suitable for your router. To start with, you want to avoid placing your router close to metal objects and appliances that emit electromagnetic waves. Metal is the top disrupter of a WiFi signal, and its presence close to a WiFi router can easily create a large dead zone.
Other materials, including glass, wood, plastics, foam, and cardboard, can also disrupt a WiFi signal but their influence of WiFi signal strength tends to less severe. Keep in mind that many buildings use metal studs for the particle board mounting, and placing your router close to them would be a bad idea. Is Your Router A Slowpoke
If your WiFi connection is noticeably sluggish, you may be tempted to write off your current router as a dud. But dont be too hastythere may be other factors at play.
First, take a look at a bill from your ISP to see what level of broadband youre paying for. Youll need a connection of at least 25 megabits per second to stream Netflix video for 4K TV, for example. If youre not paying for that, or if you dont have access to that kind of speed where you live, a brand-new router wont help you.

Understanding the basics of what your wireless router does will go a long way toward helping you fix some hiccups.
Think of a router as an electronic traffic cop, says Richard Fisco, who oversees electronics testing for Consumer Reports. Once its hooked up to the modem provided by your internet service provider , a router directs the internet connection throughout your home, making it wirelessly available to devices like your laptop, smart speaker, and smart TV.

Find Your Router’s Ip Address
You log into your router’s firmware through a browser. Any browser will do. At the address field, type the IP address of your router. Most routers use an address of 192.168.1.1. But that’s not always the case, so you may first want to confirm the address of your router.
To find your router’s IP address, type cmd in the Windows search bar and press Enter to open the command prompt. Type ipconfig in the command prompt and press Enter to run the command. Consult Your Router Settings
If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to recognize all the items on that list, but there may be a few that don’t have enough information. After going through my list, for example, I was left with a couple devices that listed no name and no manufacturer. However, I was able to get a little more information from my router’s web interface.
You can open your router’s management page by typing its IP address in your browser’s address bar. Once there, look for an option that sounds like “Attached Devices” or “Client List.” This will present you with a similar list as Wireless Network Watcher, but the information may be slightly different. After cross-referencing the unknown devices between the two, I found one of them was listed as “AzureWave Technology, Inc” in my router’s interface, but not Wireless Network Watcher. A little Googling revealed that this was my Rachio sprinkler system, so I was able to mark that down and move on.
If you see any other unlabeled devices in the list, check around your house for any internet-connected gadgets you might have missed. I realized that my wasnt listed, so after checking the Alexa app on my phone, I was able to match its MAC address to one of the unlabeled items in Wireless Network Watcher.

Clearly, a centralized location in your home is best in order to provide more even WiFi signal coverage. That means moving your router out of the basement if you live in a two or three-storey home and putting it in as central a location as possible on the main floor.
That can be easier said than done if you have a poorly located main internet connection into your home. If thats the case, you could run an ethernet cable from your main signal input to change where your router/modem gets located, but that wont be practical in some cases.
