Lte Voice Meet Your New Best Friend: Wi

Verizon Wi-Fi Calling Setup Activation on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Voice over WiFi VOIP

Wi-Fi Calling extends the coverage area of LTE Voice by including Wi-Fi networks. Remember, LTE Voice improves call quality by using your iPhones internet connection to make phone calls, instead of the traditional cellular voice network. Since Wi-Fi also connects your iPhone to the internet, its a logical next step for LTE and Wi-Fi to work together.

With Wi-Fi calling turned on, every Wi-Fi network your iPhone connects to acts like a mini cell tower. Wi-Fi calling allows you to make high-quality phone calls to people with LTE data coverage or who are connected to a Wi-Fi network.

This is especially good news for people who have poor cellular reception at home. If they have Wi-Fi, they can bypass the cellular network and make phone calls using their Wi-Fi internet connection, as long as the other party is connected to Wi-Fi or LTE, too.

In short, Wi-Fi Calling and LTE Voice both use your iPhones connection to the internet to make high-quality phone calls the only difference is how they connect to the internet. LTE Voice uses your iPhones cellular data connection to the internet that you buy from your wireless carrier, and Wi-Fi Calling uses the cable or fiber internet connection you pay for at home or use at Starbucks.

What Are The Benefits Of Wifi Calling

WiFi calling allows you to call or text from any location with a WiFi connection. This can be a major benefit especially if you are in an area that a cellular network doesnt reach. So, what are the advantages of WiFi calling?

  • Improves voice quality in areas where network coverage is weak
  • Incurs no additional charges WiFi calls inside the U.S. and to the U.S. are typically included in your monthly voice plan
  • Requires no add-on services and special plans calls may count toward your minutes unless your plan is unlimited
  • Needs no separate applications the feature is built into most devices
  • Uses your existing phone number no additional logins are necessary
  • Extends battery life the constant search for cellular networks can drain your smartphones battery

In addition, WiFi calling doesnt require a lot of bandwidth. Typically, a voice call uses approximately 1 MB per minute and a video call uses between 6-8 MB per minute. For all of these reasons, it could make sense to take advantage of solid WiFi coverage when its available.

Verizon Long Distance Rates

Verizons plans come with domestic talk and text already included, so you wont incur any roaming charges no matter where you travel within the U.S.

As for Verizon international rates, some smartphone plans come with some international benefits already included. Their unlimited plansStart Unlimited, Play More Unlimited, Do More Unlimited, and Get More Unlimitedall come with unlimited talk and text, and .5GB of data/day in Mexico and Canada. Additionally, every Verizon unlimited plan includes unlimited texting to more than 200 countries.

If you dont have one of these unlimited plans or you want more long distance capabilities, you can either pay-as-you-go for talk, text, and data, or you can add on an international perk. Keep in mind, Verizons pay-as-you-go rates are fairly expensive and can add up quickly. Further, their rates are cheaper when youre contacting international destinations from the U.S., versus using your phone in those countries. Calls from the U.S. to over 230 countries cost $.49/minute.

Verizons pay-as-you-go calling rates vary by the country youll be traveling in. The rates for texting and data use are the same no matter where your wanderlust takes you: $.50/text sent, $.05/text received, and $2.05/MB of data.

Isn’t That What Skype Does

In a way, yes. There are various services including Skype, WhatsApp, Messenger and Viber that provide what’s known under the umbrella term VoIP, for “voice over Internet Protocol,” to make calls with either a Wi-Fi or data connection.

Carrier-branded Wi-Fi calling is slightly different, however. It’s baked directly into the phone’s dialer, so you don’t need to fire up an app or connect to a service to use it. You can set it as your default way of placing a call, or if you lose phone signal, it will automatically switch to Wi-Fi calling.

Because the service is built in, that also means you don’t need to add contacts to a service as you do with Skype. You’ll have access to your existing phone book, and your friends can receive your Wi-Fi call without needing to download a third-party app. With no contacts to add, carrier Wi-Fi calling requires little effort to set up.

Is Verizon Wifi Calling Free

On Verizons WiFi Calling FAQ page under 1. How much does Wi-Fi Calling cost?, Big Red offhandedly informs us that the Wi-Fi Calling feature is available at no additional charge, and is included in your monthly existing monthly voice plan. What Verizon doesnt tell you is that it subtracts WiFi calling minutes from a voice plans allocated minutes. Riled consumers have thus complained that WiFi Calling isnt free.

In reply, an online Verizon community moderator disingenuously states: You are not in essence being charged extra for minutes used on WiFi calling. If you talk for 15 min, then you only use 15 min from your plan, but theres no charge to use those minutes via WiFi.

In other wordsno matter if one places a call using a WiFi network outside of Verizons realm or on their cellular airwavesif you talk on a Verizon phone, Big Red will charge you for airtime. Verizon claims that WiFi calls use their network since they originate from the VZW Internet gateway, even if they connect over another carriers data network. But hey, Verizon WiFi calling is free to use.

Ask yourself: Whats the point of paying premium prices for Verizons wireless 4G network? Its often congested in metropolitan areas during busy hours, so why not find another carrier that wont charge you for making WiFi calls over a DOCSIS network?

Can I Register An Address To My Phone Making Wi

Emergency services cant easily track a caller’s location from Wi-Fi calls. For this reason, youll need to add an address to your device. This is used if you make an emergency call. The police will be sent to this location if you call them via a Wi-Fi network.

The device youre using will ask for an emergency address when you enable calls over Wi-Fi. For cell phone carriers, it’s typically your billing address. The Nextiva App will automatically draw your emergency address from your User Profile. You cant use this feature without adding this information to your Apple or Android device.

How Do I Turn It Off

Not ready to start using Wi-Fi for your calls? Dont worry. You can still switch back to using your cellular network at any time.

To do this, head back to the Wi-Fi settings for your device. Simply switch the toggle back to Off. For Android devices, youll also need to switch off airplane mode in your status bar. Apple users will need to turn their cellular data back on through their settings menu.

    Apple Bursts The Carriers Bubble

Apple released FaceTime Audio in 2013, which for the first time gave iPhone users the ability to choose how they wanted to make voice-only calls in the Phone app. They could use the network of cell towers or use their Wi-Fi or cellular data connection to make phone calls over the internet, a feature that Apple called FaceTime Audio.

Apple certainly wasnt the first one to do this. Skype, Cisco, and plenty of other companies had been using the internet to make high-quality phone calls for years, but none of them could do what Apple did: They put the old technology and the new technology side-by-side, and people were astounded by the difference.

Anyone whos ever made a FaceTime Audio phone call realizes one thing right away: The phone calls sound much better.

But FaceTime Audio isnt without its flaws. It only works between Apple devices, its buggy and calls often break up, and it uses your cellular data connection if youre not on Wi-Fi, which can eat through your cellular data plan.

What Carriers And Phones Support This Service

When Apple included Wi-Fi calling capabilities in its iPhone 6 in 2014, the four major carriers in the US ramped up their support of it. These days, you can find several phones on T-Mobile, Verizon, AT& T, and Sprint that have built-in Wi-Fi calling capabilities.

On T-Mobile, the majority of new Android phones offer Wi-Fi calling built-in, while AT& T has 35 phones in its lineup. Most phones on Verizon are capable of Wi-Fi calling, but it’s unclear exactly how many phones in total have it. The carrier also specifies you must have a phone that has both Wi-Fi calling and HD Voice enabled to be eligible for Wi-Fi calling.

As for Sprint, it offers Wi-Fi calling on several Android phones too, in addition to iPhones including the 5C and newer. But while Android and iOS after 2016 have no restrictions, phones that launched before that year may not be able to make outbound calls outside Sprint’s coverage areas .

The LG V35 ThinQ, LG G7 and Motorola Moto G6 are available on Google Fi.

Google Fi and Republic Wireless switch your phone service between Wi-Fi and cellular when needed. Google Fi’s hybrid service consists of T-Mobile, Sprint, U.S. Cellular and Three’s network, while Republic Wireless falls back on only T-Mobile and Sprint when a Wi-Fi connection is unavailable.
