Largest Fixed Wireless Provider Bringing Service To Rural Areas Of 16 States

Xfinity WiFi: Understand how your Internet speed works

Rise Broadband is the nation’s largest fixed wireless provider, available to around 6% of the US population throughout parts of 16 states. Fixed wireless internet doesn’t require a cable or phone line to your home, making it ideal for rural internet service. Consequently, rural areas are where you’re most likely to find Rise Broadband, especially those in the central US or rural parts of Idaho, Nevada and Texas.

Getting broadband service to rural areas can be a challenge, but Rise Broadband does a decent job. Around 83% of those in Rise Broadband service areas can get speeds up to 25Mbps or higher, totaling around 14 million largely rural residents who may otherwise not have access to a broadband connection.

Xfinity Hovers Near The Top In Customer Satisfaction

Xfinity by Comcast has steadily risen in customer satisfaction metrics over the last few years. When you look at its 2021 American Customer Satisfaction Index numbers, Xfinity was up a point from its 2020 score, which itself was up five points from 2019. Its current score is 67 out of a possible 100 points. That puts it above the industry average of 65 and good enough for first place among all cable providers and third place among all ISPs, trailing only Verizon Fios and AT& T.

Hopping over to the J.D. Power 2021 US Residential Internet Service Provider Satisfaction Study, Xfinity consistently ranked in the top third for overall customer satisfaction. The study uses a 1,000-point scale and breaks the country into four geographic regions — West, South, North Central and East. Xfinity did well in each region, with an average score of 726 points across all of them. That was good enough for second place in the East , third in the North Central , second in the South and third in the West .

At& t Vs Xfinity: Customer Service

Picking an internet provider based on its customer service is kind of like choosing an airline based on the prices of its in-flight meals. Youre probably never going to be fully satisfied with what you get, and even if you are, its not the most important factor.

That said, there is something really nice about knowing that a real human will pick up the phone and help you when your modem isnt working.

So, whos more likely to make it easy on you, AT& T or Xfinity?

The most recent telecommunications report from the American Customer Satisfaction Index2 actually puts AT& T in first place. Xfinity isnt far behind in 3rd place.

So both companies should be pleasant enough to deal with.

Coverage & Availability Map

With $18.8 million spent in 2013, Comcast has the seventh largest lobbying budget of any individual company or organization in the United States. Comcast employs multiple former U.S. Congressmen as lobbyists. The National Cable & Telecommunications Association, which has multiple Comcast executives on its board, also represents Comcast and other cable companies as the fifth largest lobbying organization in the United States, spending $19.8 million in 2013. Comcast was among the top backers of Barack Obama‘s presidential runs, with Comcast vice president David Cohen raising over $2.2 million from 2007 to 2012. Cohen has been described by many sources as influential in the U.S. government, though he is no longer a registered lobbyist, as the time he spends lobbying falls short of the 20% which requires official registration. Comcast’s PAC, the Comcast Corporation and NBCUniversal Political Action Committee, is among the largest PACs in the U.S., raising about $3.7 million from 2011 to 2012 for the campaigns of various candidates for office in the United States Federal Government. Comcast is also a major backer of the National Cable and Telecommunications Association Political Action Committee, which raised $2.6 million from 2011 to 2012. Comcast spent the most money of any organization in support of the Stop Online Piracy and PROTECT IP bills, spending roughly $5 million to lobby for their passage.

Which Broadband Provider Is Best In My Area

Every Internet Service Provider has a different footprint and coverage map of where they can provide internet services. Even if an internet provider can offer service near you, they may not be able to connect your home to their wired network due to technical limitations on cabling distance. Although wired connections internet connections through Fiber, DSL, and Cable are best, you can still get internet service from a Fixed Wireless or Satellite provider. Broadband and fast internet connections degrade the farther away you live from the providers’ network. If your home is outside of the city limits, or in a rural area, you might not have access to a wired internet connection. Wireless internet connections need unobstructed views to nearby towers and satellites in space, or they can have slow performance when there are line-of-sight obstructions such as trees and mountains.

Xfinity Vs At& t Fiber: Availability

Xfinity and AT& T have a similar coverage area. Both have a heavy presence in midwestern states, like Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Missouri. Both have a sizable presence in California and Southern states like Georgia and Louisiana.

Xfinitys coverage eclipses AT& Ts certain parts of the West, like Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington. It also covers much of the Northeast, where AT& T internet doesnt really exist at all. Meanwhile, AT& Ts availability is stronger in much of the South and Great Plains region.

Xfinity Internet Fees And Charges

Fee type

No. 2

Most of the complaints we found against Xfinity have to do with hidden fees, rate changes, and contracts. While these issues are relatively common for internet providers, we think you can avoid most of these qualms by following our advice on Xfinity. Its much harder to get caught by a hidden fee if you know what it is initially.

One thing we didnt love with Xfinity is that it is difficult to access an agent over the phone unless youre an existing customer. That said, Xfinity has a robust online presence, and signing up with them on their website is simple. From support articles to live chat and even social media outlets, Xfinity has several customer service outlets to address your technical or billing questions quickly.

  • Fiber-Optic connections are the best, in terms of fastest available broadband speeds, compared to all other types of internet connections.
  • If Fiber-To-The-Home or Fiber-To-The-Premises is not available to you, then Cable is the best.
  • If Fiber and Cable are not available, then DSL is best.
  • If you can’t get DSL, or if the DSL speed available to you is too slow for your needs, Wireless and Satellite may be the best option. Wireless ISPs are best for when your home is too far off the grid for a wired connection.

Rural And Suburban Coverage Throughout The Midwest South And Southwest

Another champion of rural areas, Windstream’s internet service, Kinetic, is available in 18 states but only about 3% of the US population. Kinetic internet may be available in your area if you live in a rural or suburban area in the South or Midwest, but Kinetic coverage does reach as far west as New Mexico. Iowa, Georgia, Kentucky and Texas have the greatest Kinetic serviceability, but you may also find Kinetic internet near you in parts of Arkansas, New York, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania, among other states.

If Kinetic internet is available near you, it’s likely to be DSL service as fiber makes up just over a quarter of the Kinetic network. Though DSL is typically slower than cable or fiber service, Kinetic DSL is capable of delivering speeds of 25Mbps or higher in an impressive 85% of service areas. Around 64% will have access to speeds of 100Mbps or higher while nearly 8% may be eligible for speeds of 250Mbps or higher. That’s the fastest DSL service you’re likely to find from any provider.

Why Aren’t There More Internet Options Near Me

The costs of expanding to and operating in a new area, especially one that is already serviced by a competing ISP, is the main factor that prevents providers from offering service in more areas. As a result, it’s common for households to have availability to just one provider of a particular service type.

For example, though cable internet is available to 89% of households, only 7% have access to more than one cable internet provider. Multiple provider options are even more limited with fiber-optic service. Though roughly 43% of households are eligible for fiber internet, less than 3% have more than one option.
