First things first. If you have a device that supports a wired Ethernet connection and its not to awkward getting a cable to the device, we highly recommend using a wired connection over a wireless one. Wired connections offer a lower latency, no dropped connections due to interference, and are just plain faster than wireless connections.
That said, were here to talk about wireless. If you currently use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and are wondering whether you need to upgrade to 5 GHz, its really all about what you need to do with it. If youre experiencing dropped connections or if you need more speed for watching videos or playing games, then you probably need to move to 5 GHz. Theres only so much speed you can get out of a 2.4 GHz network, even under ideal conditions. If you live in a crowded apartment complex with dozens of wireless routers, baby monitors, and other 2.4Ghz band devices, then you should definitely consider switching to the 5Ghz band if you already havent.
If youre already using a dual- or tri-band router and have both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands available, youll have to make some decisions on which one to connect your devices to. Its tempting to just go ahead and use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for any device that supports it and use 2.4 GHz for the restand you can certainly do thatbut its not always the best strategy.
Problems With 5 Ghz Network
Although the 5 GHz network doesnt suffer from the same problems that we have discussed till now, it has its own fair share of problems. The biggest problem of using a 5 GHz network is that it cannot travel far and is easily impeded by structures such as walls, doors, and other physical hurdles around it. What that means is that for getting the best speed possible, you should be direct in the line-of-sight of your router. Thats why if you are using a single router in your home, and your room doesnt have its own router, the signal that you receive in your room will be far weaker on a 5 GHz network than what you would get if you are using the 2.4 GHz network.
Why 24 Ghz Wifi Can Be Better Than 5 Ghz Wifi
I mentioned at the start of this article that the range of 5 GHz can drop off a lot when theres solid objects between the router and the connecting device. In this case, a connection can still often be made, but the signal strength will be worse than with 2.4 GHz connections.
This can lead to more internet connection drop-outs, or just slower overall internet due to occasional internet packets needing to be re-sent.
Therefore if theres a lot of solid objects between your Ring or Nest device and the router, you may want to experiment by connecting to both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. You can check the WiFi signal strength of your devices in both apps:
- In the Ring app, go to -> Settings -> Device Health -> Network
- In the Nest app, go to Settings -> Technical Info -> Network.
Ring gives a signal strength as a negative RSSI number. Anything from -50 to 0 is very good, whilst -50 to -75 is good enough, and anything from -75 to -100 is bad.
Nest flip this to give a less-confusing scale from 0 to 100, with 100 being the best signal strength and 0 being the worst.
In terms of signal strength, I have a few Echo devices and a Ring Doorbell Pro connecting to 5 GHz WiFi without any real issue :
My Ring Doorbell Pro reports a RSSI -64 value which isnt meant to be too good, but Ive never had any issues with it. Ive also had no problems with my Echo device connections either.

As for 5 GHz networks, there are 21 channels of 20 MHz, as we have more, there will be less possibilities for a network to coincide on the same channel, although in this case we have channel widths of 80MHz or 160MHz, so neither is that we have so many channels available, but clearly many more than in the 2.4GHz band.

These devices also require significant bandwidth for their proper operation. Many of the conventional TV channels have their app so you can watch the program or series that you couldnt watch at the time. In addition to that, we have to add payment platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, HBO or Disney +.
Our first option would always be the Ethernet network cable, but sometimes we do not have the router next to the TV to make it possible, so in this case, our recommendation would be 5G Wi-Fi, especially if we have the router in the same room or in one of the adjoining ones. Ideal especially if you play 4K content.
The 2.4 GHz network could also be used as long as the streaming does not exceed the Full HD resolution, or if it is quite far from our WiFi equipment.

If we live in place where there are few other networks, and our Internet connection is less than 25-50 Mbps, we can think about a 2.4 GHz router in order to save money.
