Although your older devices will still work with WiFi 6, dont expect to see a jump in their performance with your new router. Both the provider and the client device must be certified for use with WiFi 6 in order for there to be significant improvement. That is, if your router supports the new WiFi 6 standard, your computer should too .

Whats New About Wifi 6

WiFi 6 introduces a host of upgrades that improve the wireless connectivity and efficiency of your wireless network and, to a lesser degree, the devices that you connect to it. As you would expect, overall upload and download speeds will be faster. A single device on a WiFi 6 network should be roughly 40 percent faster than on a WiFi 5 device, thanks to more efficient data encoding that fits more information into the same transmission and other techniques.

Furthermore, WiFi 6 reintroduces the legacy 2.4GHz frequency range, which WiFi 5 routers stopped using. The 2.4GHz WiFis longer, slower wavelength means slower uploads and downloads, but also offers a longer range and is more resilient against physical interference from walls and other household signal blockers.

How Does This Affect Me

One place Wi-Fi 6E could have an impact is mesh Wi-Fi networks. With a mesh network, multiple access points coordinate to provide one network over a larger area. It does this using wireless backhaul – you connect your phone to the access point, the access point communicates to another access point, and so on. Wireless backhaul with 2.4 and 5 GHz usually results in lower speeds and higher latency than wired backhaul. The mesh nodes have to communicate on the same channels that Wi-Fi devices already use to talk to them.

The best Wi-Fi mesh kits already use three individual radios one 2.4GHz for older devices, one 5GHz for newer devices, and one 5GHz for backhaul. Having three radios has the negative effect of consuming a lot of Wi-Fi spectrum. In very dense environments it may not be possible to use a mesh network without interference becoming an issue. By adding 1200MHz of spectrum, its a lot easier to have high throughput wireless backhaul. 5GHz and 6GHz signals also have the counter intuitive benefit of not traveling as far as 2.4 GHz signals. This allows for less interference, more uncontested airtime, and better performance.

What Are The Benefits Of Wi

All of the new technologies available with Wi-Fi 6 will significantly improve performance, essentially due to efficient and advanced technologies.

To put it simply, imagine youre waiting in line for your coffee in the morning, theres a load of people and only one barista its going to result in congestion, and slow service, especially as you all have to tell her what you want one by one.

Now imagine, instead of the single person serving, youve got an octopus behind the counter instead. It can quickly serve multiple drinks at once, to multiple people. Thats Wi-Fi 6.

The combination of OFDMA and MU-MIMO mean Wi-Fi 6 is far more able to deal with multiple devices at one time, simultaneously, rather than in succession. This improves efficiency, delay and throughput, resulting in faster speeds thanks to less interference and traffic. In addition, transmit beamforming works with this to give faster speeds at further range, seeing as the signal is directed at specific devices.

One of the major, and perhaps less obvious, benefits of Wi-Fi 6 is better performance with battery life. Target Wake Time means that your router can essentially tell your device when it should sleep and when it should wake and send or receive data. As your devices wont constantly be using their wireless capabilities, searching for a signal, connections will be much more efficient, resulting in less power use with the added bonus of less interference between devices and freed-up bandwidth.

Is Upgrading To Wi

Is Wi-Fi 6 good? Of course! Its a newer, faster version of Wi-Fi that will eventually become standard in all the devices you buy, just like Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 4 did. Technology marches on and Wi-Fi gets better and faster. Thats great.

But is it worth upgrading to Wi-Fi 6 today? Not necessarily. If youre looking to get a new router anyway, you might check out models with Wi-Fi 6 and consider how they compare to Wi-Fi 5 routers at your desired price point. Thats a good way to future-proof your setup, but we dont recommend rushing out to get a Wi-Fi 6 router if youre happy with your current router.

On the other hand, if you have an iPhone 11, a high-end modern Samsung phone, or one of the handful of laptops with Wi-Fi 6 and you really want to take advantage of the potentially faster speeds, you might get a new router with Wi-Fi 6. If youre the early adopter type, go ahead! Wi-Fi 6 hardware is out there and you can get it.

Everyone else should wait. Wi-Fi 6 is goodbut, in a few years, nearly everything you buy should have it. Wi-Fi 6 routers should come down in price and get better over the next few years, too.

How Do I Get Wi

Youll need to buy new devices.

Wi-Fi generations rely on new hardware, not just software updates, so youll need to buy new phones, laptops, and so on to get the new version of Wi-Fi.

To be clear: this is not something youll want to run out to the store and buy a new laptop just to get. Its not that game-changing of an update for any one device.

A Wi-Fi 6 router is required

Instead, new devices will start coming with Wi-Fi 6 by default. As you replace your phone, laptop, and game consoles over the next five years, youll bring home new ones that include the latest version of Wi-Fi.

There is one thing you will have to make a point of going out and buying, though: a new router. If your router doesnt support Wi-Fi 6, you wont see any benefits, no matter how many Wi-Fi 6 devices you bring home.

Again, this isnt something worth rushing out and buying. But if your home is packed with Wi-Fi-connected smart devices, and things start to get sluggish in a couple years, a Wi-Fi 6 router may be able to meaningfully help.

Is Wifi 6 Worth It

WiFi 6 is only worth it if you use multiple devices on your wireless network at the same time. It can also be worth it if you want to future-proof your WiFi network. However, since the technology is so new, it has not been perfected yet, and it can be expensive.

You might also want to consider upgrading if your router is more than three years old. If you have an old router, it might be preventing you from getting the most out of your internet plans speeds.

Some unscrupulous manufacturers on their boxes and marketing flyers claim more than double the speed increase in 802.11ax, based on the use of 160 MHz channels, which are also available in 802.11ac , but are rarely used due to spectrum limitations*. 802.11ax will not avoid these limitations either.

* â The 160 MHz channel width uses eight standard 20 MHz channels at once. This mode occupies twice the frequency range, which for some devices that do not support an extensive set of channels, leads to the fact that it will be impossible to organize non-intersecting networks on the air. The Wifi 6 Patent Landscape

With a wider implementation of WiFi 6 beyond routers and phones or personal computers, the licensing of SEPs has increasingly become an issue for the industry. While IEEE hosts a database that allows standards members to submit potentially essential patents through a so-called latter of assurance , most LOAs are blanket declarations. In other words, a company declares that it owns SEPs for WiFi in a blanket statement, without disclosing the actual list of patents that are potentially essential. For WiFi 6 , as of today, we identified LOAs submitted by 19 declaring companies, where only one company provided a list of specific patent numbers. The standards contribution data, in comparison, identifies over 80 companies that have submitted multiple technical contributions at the WiFi 6 working group TGax, suggesting that there are likely to be more than 19 potential SEP holders for WiFi 6.

What Clients May Cause Problems

A client is any device that can connect to a Wi-Fi network. This tends to bring smartphones, computers, and tablets to mind. We know of specific problems with some older products in this category, and you can read more about these issues below.

It is however worth keeping in mind that electronics such as panel heaters, bathroom scales, and smoke detectors can also be Wi-Fi clients. And while we have not recorded any specific cases yet, it might be useful to be aware that based on experience, this type of electronics is never early to adopt or support the latest Wi-Fi technology .

Pcs That Use Intel Wireless Adapters

Several Wi-Fi adapters from Intel have known issues with Wi-Fi 6 networks. These problems are mostly resolved with a driver update, but it’s important to know that those updates are not part of any Windows updates, so they will need to be updated manually.

Intel also has a dedicated application called Intel® Driver & Support Assistant, which keeps Windows up to date with the latest driver versions for their products. You can find an overview of adapters and recommended driver versions in this knowledge base article from Intel.

As an additional note: If a pc has the Wi-Fi card Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 from 2016, this can cause major problems for Wi-Fi networks regardless of wireless standard, because the pc floods the wireless network when it comes out of hibernation. There are, in other words, several good reasons to make sure that drivers are up to date.

Not sure what wireless adapter you have? Open Device Manager in Windows, locate “Network Adapters” and click to view the full list. Your Wi-Fi adapter should be listed here.

If you are an internet service provider and want to prevent users with Intel adapters from having problems, an option may be to turn off support for Wi-Fi 6 on customers’ 2.4 GHz networks for now.
