What Do You Need To Set Up Wifi At Home

Figure Out Where To Place The Router

How to Set Up Your Home Wi-Fi

Once the wireless settings are configured and saved, the router needs to be strategically placed in a position, which facilitates the new WiFi connection to have maximum coverage. Any physical obstacle like concrete walls and pillars, between the WiFi router and the devices, will restrict users from enjoying the best WiFi network.

Set Up A Password And Security Protocol

Your modems default username and password are likely set to admin or something similar.

If you got the heebie-jeebies thinking about how insecure that username and password are, youre not alone. One of the easiest ways for hackers to access your modem and internet connection is by using the default username and password combos.

So be sure to set up a new password for your modems admin panel right away. And while youre at it, set your security protocol to WPA2, WPA/WPA2, or WPA-AESthe three most secure options.

Update Your Routers Firmware

Next, youll want to check for any firmware updates for your modem and router. You can do this in your modems or routers admin panel too.

Firmware keeps your equipment operating at its highest potential. So downloading the latest firmware updates could improve your internet speed, resolve performance issues, and maybe even add new features to your admin panel.

Everything You Need Is Likely Available From Your Provider

Home Wireless Networking

Like the cable boxes from your TV provider, modems and routers are commonly available from the provider and are specific to their service. Many providers offer a gateway device, which serves as the modem and router in a single unit. Wi-Fi equipment fees, functionality and add-ons such as Wi-Fi extenders will vary by provider.

Consider The Size Of Your Home

The size of your home also plays a role in determining how to set up your Wi-Fi at home. Homes that contain 1,500 square feet or less should be able to get by with one Wi-Fi access point or router. However, homes between 1,500 and 3,000 square feet will require two Wi-Fi access points, and homes larger than 3,000 square feet may require three routers.

How To Set Up Your Home Wi

If the wireless router and other devices are capable of Wi-Fi Protected Setup , you can connect and configure these devices with the push of a button. However, having WPS set up on a router is a security risk, so we recommend disabling WPS.

Here’s how to set up a Wi-Fi router.

  • Find the best location for the wireless router. The optimal placement is in a central location, free from obstructions that could cause wireless interference.

Don’t place the router close to windows, walls, or the microwave.

  • Turn off the modem. Power off the cable, fiber, or DSL modem from your internet service provider before connecting your equipment.

  • Power up the modem, router, and computer. It’s best if you turn on these devices in the proper order. Turn on the modem first. When the modem lights are all on, turn on the router. When the router is on, turn on the computer.

  • How Much Coverage Do You Need

Since more coverage usually means more nodes, before you go out and buy a mesh Wi-Fi system, you’ll need to figure out how much wireless coverage you’ll require. To start, figure out the square footage of your home and any outdoor areas that you want to cover, and don’t forget to factor in the distance between floors for multilevel homes.

Coverage varies from system to system, so make sure you check the specs before plunking down your hard-earned cash, and keep in mind that all homes are different. Structures such as walls, doorways, and flooring will affect wireless signal transmissions, as will interference from other wireless devices such as microwave ovens and portable phone systems. As mentioned, almost all mesh systems are expandable, so if you find that your system doesn’t quite reach certain areas in your home, don’t worry: You can easily add another node after the initial installation.

Cable Tethering To A Mobile Device

If you only need to connect one device to the internet, why use WiFi at all? Instead of creating a WiFi hotspot, consider using a USB cable to tether your phone or tablet directly to your computer.

This has a few advantages over the WiFi hotspot method. No one can hack into your network, the computer charges the device, and you may even get faster speeds over the USB connection than WiFi. All the other stuff about data prices and tethering policies still apply though.

Understand Your Situation Before Choosing An Option

The best way to get Wi-Fi without an internet connection depends on where you are and how you want to use the connection.

People who do a lot of work on the go should consider a fully-fledged mobile hotspot. Occasional casual users might want to use tethering or buy an internet stick. In rural areas, you can get online through wireless internet.

What Areas Do Your Local Isps Cover

Coverage may or may not be important. If you already have an internet connection and youre just looking to add Wi-Fi capabilities, then in most cases itll be a matter of picking up the equipment you need to get started.

If you dont already have internet connection then coverage will be important. Youll want to check each internet service provider in your area and see if they offer service, as well as the type of connections. We go into more depth on how to do this in our internet buying guide.

If you want 100% wireless, the best advice I can give you is to really zoom in on the map and make sure the coverage is adequate and strong. Most ISP coverage maps will have different colors to show how good or strong the signal. Since this will likely be your primary source of internet for your home I wouldnt settle on any ol internet provider.

    Splitting Your Home Network

For security reasons you may find the need to split your home network. This is especially true in small business networks like restaurants etc were customers are also given access to the network.

Many modern routers will provide guest networks for this purpose, and is easy to setup.

Another common method, but not as simple is to use VLANs. See Understanding and using VLANs

    Prioritize Your Work Traffic

How to setup and configure Wi-Fi for home

So let’s go back to that scenario where your kids are home from school streaming Disney Plus and playing Fornite while you’re trying to work. There are a couple of things you might be able to do to keep their internet traffic from impacting yours.

The first, and easiest, is to make sure that you’re using different frequency bands. Most routers operate both the 2.4 and 5GHz bands, and many will split those bands into two separate networks that you can connect with. The 5GHz band is faster, while the 2.4GHz band offers better range. Dedicating one of those two bands to work-related traffic only will return a much better experience than sharing a band with your family or housemates.

The Netgear Nighthawk RAX120 is one of many routers that includes a Quality of Service engine capable of prioritizing specific types of web traffic, including important work-related services like Skype.

Most routers can also put out an optional guest network, sometimes with max speed settings that can help keep your kids from eating up too much bandwidth. Some will even let you run the network on a schedule, in case you want to cut them off entirely at certain hours. Similarly, your router might be able to schedule access for specific devices or a group of devices.

    What Is Your Data Plan

From what Ive seen data usage or data caps shouldnt be a problem. Thats because most ISPs Ive found dont offer a 100% wireless solution other than Clear. And their plans have unlimited data plans.

That said, I cant speak for every ISP. There are several that I may not be aware of. So if you go with a wireless solution similar to Clear, just be sure to read the fine print to see if there is a data cap, what it is and the costs for exceeding that limit.

Wifi: the key benefits and the basics of how it works

The benefit of wifi is obvious: a wireless internet connection means our devices are not tied to a fixed location within a property. You see, wifi transmits a property’s internet connection via special radio signals, allowing us to move around from one room to another, with no interruption to our internet connection.

This is obviously super handy for users of laptops, tablets and mobile devices. Once we’re connected to wifi, access to the internet is suddenly so much more convenient and flexible.

Sunny day outside? Why not catch up on your emails whilst sipping a coffee in the garden with wifi, you can!

The basics of wifi in summary:

      • Wifi is the wireless technology that all internet-enabled devices use to get online without messing around with cables.
      • Home wifi internet is made possible via a wireless router, which is basically a box that transmits and receives wireless signals between an internet connection and internet-enabled devices.
      • To communicate with a router and connect to wifi, a device must have a wireless adaptor. Most internet-enabled devices today come with a wireless adaptor built in but older computers may require a plug-in adaptor in order to get online wirelessly
